This is my model steam oil drilling engine made from a set of castings from PM Research, about 6 months in the making but it now runs sweet. Lots of help and advice gained from ‪@Blondihacks‬ and ‪@joepie221‬ from their excellent build series videos - Thank you both
About Me...
I started model engineering and building model stationary steam engines in 2015, after constructing a small engineering workshop in my back yard, I use a Myford ML7 hobby lathe, a Dore Westbury milling machine, along with a pillar drill, band-saw and the usual hand-tools associated with hobby engineering and enjoy making model engines and general tool-making and metalworking. Nearly all of my engines are scratch-built without drawings, from available bar-stock, starting from an initial idea and allowing the design to evolve throughout the build process. I do occasionally use drawings from the web, as a basis for a design, and then modify it to suit my needs, using mostly metric dimensions, but often mix metric and imperial. I spend countless hours in my workshop working on a single engine, and much frustration can be involved, but all this is eventually offset by the pleasure and excitement of seeing my model engines take shape and eventually come to life. My shed is also my sanctuary, somewhere I can go and forget about the worries of everyday life, to occupy my mind and hands with something creative and fulfilling, where I am free from distraction and interruption. Ade

@@AdeSwash you can but only in BA threads. Another way to go is to make dummy studs by cutting off the existing head and loctite a nut on the end. You then use it like a normal bolt. It looks very tidy. It’s not too hard to make a bunch of nuts.

Nice video on the engine and what other things people can do. Joe Pi took hours to get his fly wheel looking as good as he did. Maybe PM need to look at that. Love that pallet for machining the main base. I had almost exactly the same idea and couldn't understand why others don't do that for all these types of engine. It seemed obvious to me that you could mover the part from setup to setup or machine to machine and easily re-reference. I really like your version of the crank jig for the offset.
@AdeSwash
@AdeSwash 2 года назад
Hi Tony, the pallet is the best way, very easy to swap-out setups with easy reference to square, and yes the flywheel was a tough one, if I could start again on it I could probably iron out the problems, but I hadnt realised the inner rim issue when I was turning, and it was all to late to recover from

Ade having seen a number of these PM research engine builds ( this is the first cast iron one, even Joe Pie's steam engine build was an aluminium one) all of them have been made from aluminium castings and the quality of the moulding of the sand casts is very questionable. In some of the mis matched castings it appears as if the two halves of the pattern are not dowelled together allowing mismatching of the finished casting. Considering how much they charge for these kits you would think that they would address the problem or get better people to make the sand castings. Your model looks great and I'd truly love to build one but as I've only an overhead milling arm attached to my lathe ( a Warco WMT 300 ) with a maximum of 160 mm of usable linear travel in the Longditudinal axis I couldn't even machine the base casting. But hey ho hoping one day to get a dedicated milling machine !
@AdeSwash
@AdeSwash Год назад
Thanks Samrodian, the flywheel was not easy to machine to get it concentric, but the other castings were ok. There are some smaller kits available which you could probably fit around your machine, but yes none of them are cheap, you could make a barstock engine, they are just as satisfying to build

With a mill and a box that size you don't really need to have a proper wood working shop and all the tooling. It just takes some proper understanding of what your wanting to do and how to get there. In fact there's very few wood working joints that can't be easily replicated other than maybe half blind dovetails on a mill. That plywood is a good choice as far as wood goes since it's much more stable than solid wood might be, but it's not furniture grade either. It's biggest problem is when it's end grain is showing as you have it. Remaking that box to have all 90 degree angles as a 45 degree on each part removes those end grain layers showing. And that's easily done on a mill by ignoring the fact it's wood and pretending it's a very soft brown colored aluminum. Just treat it the same and use the same set ups as you would if you were building it from that aluminum plate with the same checks for alignment accuracy to obtain extremely tight fitting and accurate angles. Poor fitting joints are very obvious on something that size so the absolute best accuracy you can manage isn't really optional in my opinion. But I also wouldn't depend on straight glued joints either. Drilling and gluing in proper dowels to help mechanically reinforce each joint is very important. Your mills built in accuracy and past experience will help a lot. Today it's now mostly cnc, prior to that manual high speed mills were used a great deal in pattern making shops at foundry's because of there accuracy and ease of use. In fact I'd be surprised if the patterns for that model engine were not made on exactly that. More complicated, but a straight walled 90 degree box shape wouldn't be used on any full sized engine, almost for sure the sides and ends would be sloped out at least by a 3-5 degree angle, that also looks a lot better, but obviously involves cutting compound angles. Again it's not all that hard to do on a mill, just a bit more time consuming. At the usual much lower rpms available on most mills I've compared the cut quality between straight router bits and end mills. While not as good as what a router can provide with roughly 20k rpm, very sharp end mills do give a better surface finish than the the actual wood cutting router bits can. Wood does have an extra issue of having it tear out on edges. Backing up and supporting the woods top surface or ends of cuts with scraps of common fir or pine construction grade lumber eliminates that problem. For the top surface the engine is sitting on and to cover up that plywood grain a plank floor wouldn't be out of place. You can either buy that from wooden model ship suppliers or cut your own with small roughly 4" diameter carbide tipped blades made for the saws model ship builders use. Correctly done that type of planking would be a repeating pattern of either 3,5, or even 7 planks wide where the plank ends are the same length at every 3,5 or 7 plank spacing across the width of the floor. That pattern is sometimes called a ship laid floor and was almost always used on full sized wood decked ships and on stationary engine room floors. Ideally and to properly pull off the illusion you'd also replicate what would have been an underlying beam structure by drilling and doweling each plank end and along the plank length to show that structural layout. Drawing it out first on paper and figuring out probably a 24" beam spacing at 1/8th scale might take a bit of work, but the end result would be worth doing so. Premade small diameter hardwood dowel stock can also be bought from those model ship suppliers for that doweling. A light staining after the floor is completed with fine grain sandpaper to apply the wet stain works well to help fill any grain and get a very smooth surface for model sized work. The just wipe off the excess with a clean rag. For anything like this I'd recommend some test pieces first as a trial run until your happy with the results. Very convincing brick or even stone would likely have be used as the support structure for a permanent engine placement and that's also easy to find from doll house suppliers that could be used around the sides of that box. It just depends on how far your willing to go to get what you want. I've machined a fair amount of wood with both my metal cutting lathe and mill, and yes it makes a bit of a mess. But for small projects like your engine box I'd choose to do it on a mill even if I had a full wood working shop. There's simply no comparison between what can be done accuracy wise compared to any of the more conventional wood working equipment.

Very nice engine however you made the same mistake as a lot of people including blondyhacks. Its running backwards, and the theory behind it is very simple. As the piston pushes the crosshead forward the connecting rod should rise pushing the crosshead down into a large piece of stable cast iron as it returns it once again pushes the crosshead down into a piece of cast iron.The crosshead guide bars are only there to give a bit of stability and to keep the bearing surfaces in contact. Hope this helps and best regards.
