Modeling off-axis in Plasticity

It’s easiest to model objects at the origin, aligned to the XYZ axes. But that’s not always possible, and Plasticity gives you powerful tools to move, rotate, scale, mirror, etc. with custom alignments: using pivots and using construction planes.

This software makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up; it so exciting to watch its development. I've used SketchUp professionally for 10 years and frankly it's dumb as dirt compared to this.

The feature of construction planes between two non-parallels faces is just AWESOME!! It immediately gives my infinite design ideas. Looking forward to get my hands on Plasticity!! 😈 Thank you Nick!

Bought it after using it for 30 min. Using Step export, it produces perfectly scale-accurate trimmed solid models to Rhino, or obj models to Blender. Really intuitive and not "fragile" and "sticky" like most nurbs modelers. Does a better job of blending solid and nurbs than any program I've used yet, basically seamless. And these intuitive workflow improvements are major improvements. Keep up the great work!

Patents, existing in ASICS, may limit parasolid support. IE. SAP aerospace model topologies, that are heavily regulated in non USA supported countries.

Many of these methods are very, very similar to DesignSpark Mechanical and Spaceclaim. Sure not all, there's no plane from screen, but the vast majority of plane creation methods demonstrated, those programs have been doing it that way for about a decade. Don't get me wrong, Plasticity looks fantastic...and I will be getting a personal copy when you launch it. At least I'll know how to make / use Planes instantly - LOL. The speed that you have 'knocked up/ created/ coded' Plasticity is staggering !

Working with construction planes is a pretty universal feature in cad programs. However, it doesn’t really exist in polygonal modeling software, which is where most plasticity users come from

DesignSpark Mechanical is very basic compared to Plasticity - as a subset of Spaceclaim features, they've really hamstrung it by removing such basic features as "mirror across construction plane" (for 3D objects, anyhow) and removing any type of "array along curve" feature (and several others). Spaceclaim is very capable, but it costs far in excess of Plasticity. Additionally, its ACIS geometry kernel is not as performant with complex designs as the Parasolid kernel used in Plasticity. As direct CAD modelers go, Plasticity doesn't have the breadth of features Spaceclaim does, but for concepting designs it's got it where it counts for an incomparably enticing price. I couldn't afford to justify a "personal" copy of Spaceclaim, and DesignSpark Mechanical is far too barebones to serve my use cases, but Plasticity is going straight into my toolkit. Cool to hear that it's on your radar also - lot of great designs already being produced with the betas!

@@TAH1712 Oh, v6 DSM has dropped? I'll check that out and see what's new (if nothing else, I do like the 2D CAD drawing tools in DSM). I last checked a couple months ago and it was still at v5. EDIT: looks like v6 *removed* STL import, and still doesn't have mirroring, except when paying for the new subscription tiers. Bring on Plasticity! ;)

Hi, a bit late to the party but could we do 'construction plane on a path' like in Fusion 360? If that's the case, I shall move away from Autodesk for good, like I did from Maya 10 years ago. Liking the software a lot but still quite a lot of juicy ideas to inspire from Fusion. (For the next smart person who'll say 'if you like Fusion, why don't you keep using it?' - I like Fusion but not Autodesk, plus I wish to part my $100 + to Plasticity, always support the up and coming fellars in the game, cheers.)

Forgive my ignorance but why can't I see the XYZ center lines and the grid on the construction plane like in your video? I only see them when pressing Numpad 1,3, or 7 etc but it always vanishes as soon as I change the view in the slightest. And no matter the orientation, if I hold the center wheel and move the view around the cube is always moving around the on the Z axis line only. What am I missing? I just went through the new help files first.

Hey @nickallen1 will there be a wrap function similar to shrink-wrap in blender?
@BirdbrainEngineer
@BirdbrainEngineer Год назад
Is there a way to specify **exactly** under which angle (say from world origin) the construction plane would be created? In addition I wanted to ask about the software capabilities in general... Does Plasticity have any parametric capabilities? And perhaps more importantly, is it possible to create curves from (parametric) equations? And finally, does the software have polar capabilities (polar/circular symmetry and arrays)? The software looks quite nifty and de-cluttered compared to many other CAD-s, but without the aforementioned capabilities it would be a bit difficult to design more complex parts to an exact design (imagine turbine blades or gears). I'm certainly interested in where this software goes and will certainly consider trying it out at some point.

Hello @nickallen1, I have purchased Plasticity and I am overjoyed to incorporate it into my workflow. However, I am unable to locate the command to flatten a surface back to an axis (specifically the S Y 0, S X 0, S Z 0 function in Blender) within Plasticity. Would it be possible to perform this action in Plasticity? If so, could you kindly provide me with the command? Thank you and congratulations on your excellent work!"

Hey Nick I really tried to move over from MoI this week to Plasticity. I love everything about it UI/UX, modelling operations etc.. apart from the crucial part of exporting. MoI OBJ exporter exports a really clean ngon mesh (not triangulated) where Plasticity triangulates the mesh. Do you think it will be as good export quality in the future as MoI, or is MoI doing some crazy magic here?
@nickkallen1
@nickkallen1 Год назад
moi has the best exporter. plasticity can do mostly ngons (I assume you tried this already), but it's not quite as good as moi. Maybe someday I'll improve it but I think people who need moi's quality can probably afford to buy both for now
@Oldyellowbrick
@Oldyellowbrick Год назад
@@nickkallen1 yeah maybe I’ll try exporting as a cad file then use MoI for obj..I’ll give that a try next time, did a similar workflow with Fusion>iges>MoI>obj before Autodesk took out IGES export from free. I would definitely buy/sub IF I used it daily but I literally just use it for the odd element. Plasticity is just so user friendly compared to any of them :)

But there is an advantage compared to Plasticity, namely the ability to duplicate part of the geometry (such as holes), to another, for example it would be more convenient to take one part and copy several times the entire geometry (a great time saver), the same works with arrays (such as linear or radial), this feature is very missing in Plasticity (when I was using beta 0.1.74).
