I have found placing a house on a sloping terrain (and making it look good!!) is so difficult and I have scoured the internet trying to find how to do this...finally...thank you for this tutorial, it has helped me rethink a little and try again :) and I agree with Max's comment "More tutorials regarding site modeling are always welcome..."

Fascinating, and inspirational to watch how others interact with the terrain - it's easier to come up with more interesting ways to work, if you know you're going to be able to draw it.

Awesome and very helpful! Would love a video incorporating a plot plan with elevations and how to make a swimming pool fit the existing grade and how walls could be added in. Is there anyway to show a 2% slope on a patio vs it being completely level??

Great tips. Soap skin for site mesh is a clever application. It seems way smootger than fighting with smoove. Perhaps Artisan or SUbD are useful here? Would love a tut on artisan. Could joint push pull reliably extrude to flat without the 1 inch margin issue?

Thanks for this awesome video Justin. Quick question (as a novice in comparison), how does the stamp tool differ to extruding the building into the terrain and then using the trim command in solid tools?

Hi Justin, another great tutorial. Over the years have been using SketchUp for my workflow, I think that fitting the buildings to the terrain has given me the biggest headaches. It is so much easier now with the assortment of new plugins etc. On another topic, I am having a problem with one of my large models with the extents of the views being chopped off. I know I saw you fix this on a tutorial quite simply but I can't remember which tutorial. Can you let me know either what tutorial it was or are you able to just explain the fix for me please?

Thank you for this video. Once you have the building footprint in place, how would you go about adding landscape plantings to the slope created? Also, how can you create landscape bed lines where the mulch would meet the grass on a slope like this? Thank you!!

Justin, that was extremely helpful to know that with multiple extensions this kind of process and be achieved. I know this might be out of pocket but have you ever done any tutorials on dynamic components? if so please help me to navigate to your link. My Sketchup practice has gone from intermediate level to advanced level just by watching your tutorials since last year.

Hi Justin, thanks a lot for your helpful videos! I am a landscape architect. Currently, I have a project to do in a very sharp slopping terrain in Greece! However, I have trouble doing it 3D in SketchUp. Do you give paid online Sketchup classes? Or if not, do you know anybody else, as few tutors are dealing with landscape modelling on slopping terrains.

Hey Justin, Quick question... I see you reverse faces a lot, but what is the reason or benefit of doing this?
@Landscape_Architecture
@Landscape_Architecture 3 года назад
By orienting your faces, the material will show up correctly if he wanted to render the results. All faces have a front and a back side and if the faces is "back" side out, the renderer would probably show them as invisible. Hopefully you found this out about two years ago, but perhaps this helps someone else ;)

Ultimately, a design can't be finished until the building is located on it's site. Some would say you shouldn't start to design, until the site and location are selected, for custom houses. Tract house building would be different I suppose. Soon more houses will be using underground services too, like geo thermal tubing or buried utilities. All this says to me, that our Sketchup skills for site modelling should be just as good as those for building modeling. One hurdle I can't get over, is the propensity to over draw entities in preliminary drawings. It's my contractor's instincts, telling me to get everything exactly right the first time, one time, so it's complete and ready if/when you come back to it. The stairs in the example look good especially for exterior stairs which can be steeper (less luxurious) but I would take the time to draw what will go there, with the correct rise and run according to the existing measurements. I make certain that windows and doors are exactly right in their finished frame dimensions, then install them in openings which are 1/4" larger all around. That dimension could be 3/8", easier for the installers to level the unit and foam it in place. If the design works out and then construction drawings have to be extrapolated from it, any extra effort now will save time then, but the amount of time I spend now doing that, is too much. I envy those who can pull off a complete house design with it's floorplans and elevations and situated on a lot, in relatively short time, like a few days or something. It takes me months, of two or three hours per day. I'm sure a repeatable process will emerge and shorten production time a lot, but that's almost counter to the creative process, that goes into 'custom' houses. I'm happy with my pace, but I couldn't make a living from it.
