Hi Charlie, you put a new meaning to the carpenters saying you can’t have too many clamps, now you have to add you can’t have too many weights to the saying. The river is a good idea, I can’t wait to start my layout and I will have a river. Hope you are keeping well, Keith
Sorry Valley Shortline and Canal (OO scale) .Thanks Charlie for walking us through this simple but effective way to fill in an empty space. I changed my "river" into a canal so I could add a narrowboat scene..
Hi Charlie, just watched your latest offering-enjoyed it very much. Recently took down my layout to move house-then the virus arrived. Can't move! All railway stock packed up in boxes. Never mind, your video's always cheer me up. Please carry on!
A great idea Charlie. The river scene will add a visual depth and not just a flat board with track running across. I can see your enthusiasm going already talking about fishermen and a picnic scene. How about a couple in a canoe. Then there is the shopping trolley and a discarded Tyres or bike. Great work as usual Charlie keep it up. Stay safe. Gary Co Durham.
Thank you Charlie for your many videos, they are excellent and are of great help to me. One safety point, I was taught many, many years ago that when using a jig saw, ensure that the cable goes over your shoulder and down your back. That way there is little chance of cutting thro the cable with the saw. Take care.
Morning Charlie, what a great little idea. It breaks up the track and adds yet another dimension to your layout. At the same time it still gives you good access to the electronics below. Personally I'd leave the river now until later, but first cap the back before you forget. Concentrate on getting the track down and wired in so you can get back to running some loco's. Cheers Gareth.
Outside in a T shirt in sunny conditions not in Edinburgh you wouldn't,you are a very talented guy Charlie and if I was starting out to build a set I would recommend loooking and learning from yourself, roll on next Friday.Stay safe everyone.
Hi Charlie great video now I want a river on mine now my wife really likes you for it lol so am going to have my brew then go and do it cheers Charlie thanks Paul 😊😊😊
Hi Charlie I did it well it's not as good as yours so I've gone with a canal instead and I've put a elevator on the lines and my good old McDonald's wooden sticks worked a treat lol cheers for the idea I've enjoyed it lots cheers Paul
@@ChadwickModelRailway hi Charlie it was a great idea railway looks better so far I did use installation bored had to cut it down I was lucky to have some because someone left it outside of a house that was being done up so I walked past and picked it up and took it home lol so it sits in my garden covered up lol 😃😂😂😂😂 I'll give it back if they want it back lol cheers Paul
I love watching your videos. In fact if I spent as much time working on my own layout as I do watching videos about yours I'd have something worth showing 😂
Great job and if it's like the other end you will have a great look. As you mentioned about a picnic area on the bank reminded me of a layout at Ally Pally a couple of years ago as my friend pointed out she said, look there a nudist colony, I said no way and there was, partially hidden by high bushes! Go on Charlie I dare you? Hope everyone is staying safe and I'm gagging for a pint of a pub real ale. Cheers
Why didn't I think of this - I was planning to build scenery upwards to accommodate a stream which would have been at baseboard level. You've saved me a whole lot of work and I shall get cracking with the jig-saw tomorrow! Many thanks, John B.
Hi Charlie, Never made comments to you before, but do watch your videos which I like, all very informative including the mistakes obviously intentional!!!!!!!!!. Great video on how you done the River bed such an easy way to do it, too late for me to do one now anyway keep up the good work, best regards from Barry in Spain
Hello Charlie, nice work their. I am in the states and this is almost the exact way I did my river into a small cove. Also I figured this is a sturdy construction method . With the wood and glue bottom it creates a perfect seal for water products later. Here in the state I will use a bit of foam for contours.
Hi Charlie, Enjoyed watching you do this you seem to take everything in your stride so well done will be keen to see the finished river with everybody keeping 2m apart one thing you do a lot of changing of drills screw bits etc you can get a tool that takes both and you just swap as needed and the one I have is also magnetic so if a metal object gets in between the sleepers you can just get it out easy I do it with my pins but I know you do not use them but I am sure it might have happened with fishplates etc.Your looking very well so please keep that way and stay safe. Cheers Robert.
One observation, Charlie. The land surrounding the river would generally be floodplain, meaning that the railway would be on an embankment (even a small one for effect), to protect the p-way from flooding. Looking good though.
Splendid stuff, as always. I might have been tempted to have a canal, if only to add a barge quay. If my math is right, that ±5" is about thirty foot to scale, which ought to be a decent enough river. Such things are bit more complicated if one is modeling US rivers, as they often have 30-40' tall embankments a quarter mile to either side of the waterway centerline, for flood control. So, railroad modelers much prefer river scenes with "hard" embankments, or just "wild" rivers.
Hi Charlie... There is nothing wrong with patting yourself on the back when a plan comes together. Especially if no one else is around to do it ..Great job on the river build so far.. Cheers and Happy Easter.🐣
Charlie, A nice foundation for you to start on. Glad to see you staying inside your " Bubble". Once or twice there you were venturing out to far from the house. Just be carefull the people next door don't report you for pushing your stay at home boundaries. First day of summer and your out waveing your jig-saw around. Cheers, Chris Perry.
Another great video. oh and by the way i saw that neat carpenters trick of cleaning the glue off your finger by wiping it on the underside of the board lol..at 12:12
Hi Charlie, that was great. You are a true Renaissance man. Lol. I look forward to your progress. Your viaduct series is a favorite of mine. This looks like it will be too. See ya next time.
A proper job again Charlie. Im at the planning stage i have flexi and points galour for my layout. But until this lockdown is done I am stuck. Taking in you ideas. The viaduct may be on my horizon and I am planning open frames for my baseboards to give me multiple areas for scenery. Keep up the great work love it.....
Your a genius lol wish I d seen this last year lol I left a large gap and fitted kingspan in and carved it then supported it . Your way looks much better lol
Hi Charlie this is great 👍 am just starting a build and want to put a canal in so will use this technique my self . Makes sense really 🤣🤣 love all the videos learning a lot 👍👍👍
At the 16 minute mark, that was a smart move to put the cross members in that also sit on with the under side of the river bottom. When the glue ever lets go if it is those cross members will catch the river :)
@@ChadwickModelRailway About all I can do here in the US is drink cheer and work on my model railroad. Just not at the same time!....Thanks and stay healthy in the UK. Philip
Great video Charlie, I use a material called Pinex for my base boards, so carving in a river is quite simple and yes it does add a extra dimension to a layout, keep safe and well, thanks from down under in Wairoa New Zealand
As always a great video Charlie. Being cheeky I’ve noticed a little job you can do during the lock down, if you get bored. Your patio could do with a pressure wash - cheeky I know.
Another stonker, Charlie. The weather is fine and you know it's a sign, for messing about on the river. ;) It'll just have to be an indoor one for now*; and very nice it is too. *Unfortunately I still have to go into work but I'm off for 8 days from tomorrow evening. Timber delivered, layout plan decided, track been dispatched. Watch this space! Can't tell you how much of an influence and inspiration you continue to be! @10:00 My Grandad built and maintained Charlie 130s. *Proud but slightly sad smile, as he passed a couple of years back*
That is awesome, great job on the modifications. I agree a job starting point and will look great when you do the landscaping. Looking forward to the future videos on this scene. Thanks for sharing. Ken
Well then went better than last weeks video :) - Layout is coming along nicely, and I love the concept that the river flows through to the other board on the opposite side of the layout.
Very nice, Charlie. The lake and stream on my N scale layout were constructed in similar fashion to add depth to the layout. I can picture it in my mind, and it's brilliant. Thanks for sharing. 👍 👍 👍
I'm from British Columbia and this is the first time I have heard of the Canadian Lumber Standard nice to know it exists. Here I thought dimension lumber was an industry standard. What you have there is a 2" X 3" pronounced two by three. The species are usually spruce, pine, or fir printed as SPF on the lumber.
Evening Charlie. Hope your and your family are all are keeping well? Really great addition too Chadwick parkway 👍🏻 I use gorilla glue all the time it's really great quick glue and very strong 💪 I've split plenty of wood trying to separate it 🙈 I've had a train moving this week on my layout lol 😂 Thanks for all your videos that give myself and others lots of inspiration to build model railways. Looking forward to seeing the next video cheers Stevie 😎
This is going to be fantastic Charlie, looking forward to seeing how great it likes, nice to see sun shine, we have had lots of rain this week, something we don't usually get this time of the year....thanks for sharing....Jack 👍
Nice one again Charles, no point in repeating what others have said without getting all Gorilla Glued about it for it was all good work in the end. I look forward to the next episode to seeing this developing scene. Like the old saying of a Charlie of all trades, but a master of none, you do very well my friend in producing these films and building your layout. Though I was cringing and expecting another single Chuckle Brother moment were you cut into the picnic table. Anyway, you have a great Easter Holiday weekend rolling your dyed hard-boiled eggs down a hillside without getting a fine for being out unnecessary other than exercising. Though watching you working away has been enough for me today and I'm tired out, goodnight, well morning at 3:18 am... J... zZZZz.
@@ChadwickModelRailway Oh thank you, Charlie, I really do enjoy your video films, especially when you get tongue-tied and the other comical moments that crop up that I've witnessed so far. Laughter is such a great medicine and that is why with a pun here or there, a cheeky or yeah I can be a bit sarcastic I know, but never to deliberately hurt or maim anyone. Hopefully, I have not done that with you as it wouldn't have been said to upset you or anyone else. If at any time it has please let me know. You keep healthy too Charlie and extend that to your family too.
I discovered from my last (failed) layout about gluing the cross members down, I just screw them in place now. Much easier to allow for a bit of flexibility like you've shown. I've just today worked out I need to move one by an inch due to an annoyingly placed point motor!
Hello, very good video! I learn a lot, thanks for teaching so well! Greetings! Excuse me, I wrote without thinking in Spanish or English, is that the language of modeling is universal, hahaha, that is very good!
Charlie, there really is no end to your talent. The river will add an extra dimension to that area, As an added bonus your body gained some vitamin D having worked in the sun for an hour or so. Keep up the good work. Cheers Greg
Thanks Charlie. That was a great video. I do use extruded foam, but that was a very useful method. I have been thinking of not using the foam on future expansions to cut costs. Also, I loved the how to make Hand Sanitizer video as well. Cheers 🍻!
"Can't be hard can it? its only wood at the end of the day" I have said things like this to myself many times before, and they usually get filed under "famous last words" about half way through balls-up number 3! Still, yours is looking good! Cant wait to see it developing, rivers are always a nice addition to any layout as far as I'm concerned! :)
