On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020 or even dogfighting in Battlefield 2042, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. You can fly all kinds of combat aircraft including the F-16, F-15, F-14, JF-17, Su-27, Mig-29, Mirage and the F-18 Hornet along with many other aircraft and helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-8.

been playing combat sims since falcon 1.1 and just learned that chaff is more useful when the missile is below you due to the lack of ground clutter. makes total sense. One thing I think needs more explanation though is how you can abuse the missile's need for lead pursuit to make it run into obstacles like the ground. And how smaller changes in your heading can have large turns required for the missile, especially if you're fast - because it needs to pull more lead when you're fast. cheers!

How do you calculate the MAR or NEZ (No Escape Zone)? Do you just generally set a rule that if an aircraft is at such an altitude, you avoid coming within such a distance? For instance, if hostile is at 15000 at mach 0.8, you should generally avoid coming within 20 NM of the hostile? I mean, is there a basic scale chart, or mathematical equation that can provide that determination? Also, should you assume the hostile is carrying the latest and greatest on board, or is there information/factors one can use to help determine how to establish their MAR and maintain combat dominance against the hostile?
@GrowlingSidewinder
@GrowlingSidewinder 6 месяцев назад
So yes you should always assume he is carrying this best payload, unless you know for a fact what he is carrying (obvs in real life you wouldn’t) as for the ranges of the MAR you have to do “testing” to figure those out. And it’s the main reason why countries don’t release the real capabilities of their missiles because then the enemy can figure out the MARs and survive.

So I guess the drag from the atmosphere is the missile's biggest problem, because if it wouldn't be you could climb and force the missile to trade speed for altitude. But when you dive the missile following you will trade altitude for speed which seems to be not enough to compensate for the denser air. Is the towed decoy modelled in DCS? I would like to see some F35 action with that.

Great video, thanks! I understand the concept of using the increased drag from the denser air to bleed energy from opposing missiles, but by drawing them DOWN doesn’t gravity help maintain the missiles’ energy? Other than being outlined against the blue sky and opening yourself up to an easy radar silhouette, what about a rapid climb to force the missile to bleed energy overcoming gravity?

@NLozar22
@NLozar22 6 месяцев назад
Attempting to outclimb a missile is generally a terrible idea. You need to have a deep understanding of the performance of the missile that was yeeted at you and how long you have to defend for before attempting to outclimb it. Notching, descending and turning cold are general far more advisable.
@GrowlingSidewinder
@GrowlingSidewinder 6 месяцев назад
yes, it "works" to make it fight gravity but its no where near an effective force has drag and friction, also consider that as you climb to make it fight gravity, you are slowing down as you exchange gravity for Kinetic energy so you're making yourself an easier target to kill. This method works if the missiles energy state has already been defeated, but that case you can do whatever you like anyway the missile is already dead.

Ok but how do you know what the MAR IS. Knowing to be mindful of the MAR is good advice for staying alive, it's not too difficult of a concept, but that's only useful if you know what it is, and since a missile's Rtr is so dependent on type, speed, and altitude, how can you figure it with certainty in the moment?

@klekaelly
@klekaelly 5 месяцев назад
It's interesting that to dodge the missile, you have to pull it down into denser air. This confused me because I thought gravity would cause the missile to accelerate as it went down, by converting the potential energy of its altitude into kinetic energy. Because of this, I was thinking that it would make sense to crank and climb instead. I guess the math just doesn't lean that way!

So when doing the notch, you turn 90deg from the bandit, right? Doesn't that put you outside the gimbal limit of your radar? I thought that was somewhere around 30deg each side of the nose? So do you accept the loss of lock, and just hope you can reacquire quickly when you turn back in?
@GrowlingSidewinder
@GrowlingSidewinder 4 дня назад
correct (mostly) the angle off the nose a radar can maintain lock depends on the aircraft. Some are 60 some are 80....the su57 because of side mounted radars can maintain lock IN the notch. But regardless generally what you said was correct for 99% of aircraft the notch is a defensive maneuver. Because it forces you to break lock. Generally speaking you are only notching if you are in the range no escape of the enemy missile otherwise you would probably prefer the much safer option of just going cold. But yes even from the notch (if you survive) you will try to recommit and target the enemy aircraft again. (but if you are in this RNE then he was probably in yours, in which case 1 of you is probably dead)

Assuming the best modern missiles and radar, would you say that a fighter jet that can supercruise at Mach 2 and 65,000 feet (and starts the fight that way) would have an advantage in BVR over other fighters that start lower and slower?

Lol, has faster and higher he flies, the more kinetic and potential energy his missile has. Slower and lower flying enemies would not only have less energy, they also need to fight greater air resistance.

@@Mike_Romeo Yes, that's my thinking for why aircraft capable of this mode of operation would have a substantial advantage. This is my thinking toward NGAD: higher and faster. But I want to check my thinking against GS's experience. He's talked a lot about targets being easier to pick out against the sky and he always goes low to defend missiles. A fighter starting at this altitude may find it difficult to go low enough to defend missiles, especially without creating contrails. I think staying high and fast is great, but GS probably has a lot better intuition about this than I do. There might be situations where this way of operating is a problem.

@@SwordOfApollo Gettling low is much easier than getting high cause you wont have to fight gravity and you dont need to reach high speeds to get up. Nobody is staying up unless their missiles have a massive range adventage. They always need to defend to the ground because the enemy is forcing them to do so. Its bettee to be cautious then dead.

Any chance you can do a video on how to set up GCI? Always wanted to do that since it's good practice for me.
