In this video I begin the process of making a stone transom for a window. Watch as I'm given drawings and a piece of stone which is made into a valuable piece of architectural masonry.
ABSOLUTELY SUPERB masonry video (Part 1) detailing all the key processes to carve a window transom using a combination of hand and power tools. All technical names for the window components were fully described as where the forms of the mouldings ( appealing to working drawings and sections). The statements regarding the importance of assessing a stone prior to setting out ( and in relation to the drawings) was great to see as was the marking out procedure. Attention to detail at all stages is implicit in MS CARVING! The content also emphasised methodical working as one progressed ( removing checks in a sequential order and ensuring key measurements were adhered to) - great close up shots highlighted this. Outlining how specific moulding sections were carved was insightful too. Thoroughly looking forward to Part 2 of this series ( and beyond) - So grateful to you for sharing such amazing stone masonry content Tom - one learns so much from your videos and we fully appreciate and admire such wonderful craftsmanship!!
I look forward to every new video. Your personality and skill are a perfect match. Thank you for the detail of your explanations. I’m a letter carver and want to expand to banker work.
The box tramel is a great tool that everyone should have! Have you thought of a video on how to build it yet? Anyway another great video, thanks Tom! 😊
Yeah man. The most underrated and underused tool in the masonry toolbox. Most masons I know don’t even have one which is just crazy considering how much time when marking out it saves you. Yeah good idea. I need a new one because the one I’ve got is really really old and the brass is almost worn through so I’ll make a new one and show the process. 👍
