The Modern is a very complex hyper-modern opening and a great weapon for black against 1.e4!
It is also known as the Robatsch Defense (after Karl Robatsch). Same as any other hyper-modern opening, the Modern Defense applies the same provocative principles. Black relinquishes central control and the key central squares to white in an attempt to take them back later on using the pieces.
To do so, black fianchettoes his kingside bishop and castles, and then goes on to use his bishop and the central pawn break c5 to strike through whites seemingly solid pawn center. White, on the other hand, follows the classical chess principles like a good school boy; white plays d4 and e4, taking up the central squares, develops his minor pieces and has no problem.
The modern is a battle of styles, and players who only play the classical defenses such as e5 or c5, can seldom feel comfortable playing such openings. To play it you have to be prepared to work with less space and less squares, and you constantly need to look for counter play. Black’s play is provocative but it’s ok, but if black fails to react and break open the center or find counter play with his pieces, he could find himself in an inferior position in a matter of moves.
The opening starts after 1.e4 g6. Black’s next few moves are going to be Bg7, d6, and a6/c6 regardless of white plays. This makes the defense easy to learn compared to the Sicilian or the French lets say. White can choose between numerous systems against it, though.
As opposed to the Pirc, which is similar to the Modern, in the Modern black delays the development of his g knight to f6, which sort of leaves white without the very strong e5, which now doesn’t come with a tempo. The downside of not developing the knight is that the king can’t castle as soon because the knight is still there. This is why the Modern is way more risky for black because the king stays in the center considerably longer.
We are going to be looking at five different systems for white and what black can do to refute them in the six videos that are to follow in the series.
The Modern (Robatsch) Defense B06
3. Nc3 Standard Line
...d6 4. Be3 a6 Tiger's Modern
3. f4 Three Pawns Attack
3. Bc4 Bishop Attack
3. c4 Averbakh System
3. Nf3 Two Knights Variation

This video is great. I started playing chess recently and naturally over about 500 games I've leaned towards playing the modern defense, but never really understanding it completely. This helped highlight some of the responses white has that I've blundered before. Amazing work!

at 10:30 I would recommend playing 4.e5, which is recommended for example by Tiger Hillarp Persson and Cyrus Lakdawala in their books. The endgame is very interesting and if you study it might offer excellent winning changes. Good games to study are for example Alexander Morozevich playing with black against Agrest and Bareev in 2004 and 2005. Against Agrest Moro won easily as Agrest simply did not seem to understand the endgame nowhere nearly as well as Moro.

« So black is giving up the center to white, to disrupt the enemy camp later » since the center in chess like the shogi’s bishop’s head it’s like playing ranging rook. Excellent idea to showcase some possible pawn structures on a board with minimal pieces! This visual hue, having the board with only the most important information (the actual pawns), makes it is easier to stick to memory cognitively speaking. I will forever remember the possible 3 patterns of pawn structures in the modern.. Even better I think a good idea whould be to do it for every introductory video to each opening under consideration. Say take 3-4 popular lines and see whether the are patterns that arise from the formation of the pawns. Great, great video this one!

My favorite opening was scillian defence classical variation. I still use it in classical time format which gave me a lot of wins with black but I was struggling with blitz . I play nf6 as soon as they play bc4, especially if they have the knight on f3 already. You are then threatening nxe4 and the centre fork trick. It's not crushing for black or anything but it shows why the bishop isn't best placed on c4. Even though it looks aggressive.

one question. does “Indian” mean something in particular, e.g. fianchetto and pawn (..e5 in King’s Indian) in front of it? or is it random and just means it’s an opening first seen in India or played by a Indian GM? it feels like “Indian” always related to some kind of (K side?) fianchetto position…?
@artiphishle
@artiphishle Год назад
in Anglo-Indian same for black (in the English) but pawn on ..c5 possible, so no own pawn blocking own B in this. However it’s already a “anglo-Indian” without the fianchetto (after ..Nf6) so it’s random? however there the plan seems also to be a K side fianchetto for black. always thought of some similarity or system…?

I don't understand why ...Nf6 in the "Standard Line" is bad for black, but it's normal development in the "Three Pawn Attack". I mean, in both cases white has the e5-move. So what's the subtle difference that white's e4-e5 is bad (for black) in one case, and acceptable in the other? I think this is of huge importance in understanding the fundamentals in the earliest phase.
@timwheeler8523
@timwheeler8523 4 года назад
In the Pirc, when white plays e5 it hits the f6 Knight, which means black has to move it (or take the pawn). In the modern, with the knight on g8, e5 doesn't hit a knight, so black can choose to ignore it. Big benefit.
