WARNING: There are no hot licks in this video. It's mostly talking about jazz and songs and jazz songs and songs that are jazzy. But all stuff a jazz drummer needs to know.
If you need some hot licks, you may want to look away. Viewer discretion advised.
If you survive part 1, there's some actual playing in part 2! But, sadly, still no hot licks. Not even room temperature ones.

Great channel and a great topic. I feel like most drum channels are just licks. It's like people stopped talking about musicianship. I try to cover some jazz drum basics on my channel from a musicians standpoint. We need to bring this back. Peple learn 4 way polyrhythmic coordination with their feet but don't get TONE or ARRANGEMENT....

I usually mess up the form/melody in my head as soon as the soloist starts.

Practice listening to songs and keeping track of either the melody in your head, or the SOUNDS of the chord changes. You don't need to know the names of the chords (I certainly don't to most tunes), but I can recognize when it changes. Also, I tend to focus on the bass lines for that sort of thing. Hope this helps!

The cord changes of the non soloing instrument? Do chord changes usually mean change in the 4 bar phrases? Still unsure what to play during the solo and what other instruments I should bass my playing off of.

Now that you mention it, "Sid's Ahead" by Miles Davis is an AABA song.
