Modern home in Mexican plateau revives ancient water harvest

In the slope of Tepozteco mountain, Meztitla (Náhuatl for “place near the moon”), Casa Meztitla is in a never ending relationship with nature, harvesting/filtering water the way it was done in Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. Surrounded by subtropical rainforest that remains untouched, its inhabitants believe that what the land gives should be returned to the property.
In an area with no public water supply and a rainy season that lasts only from July through September/October, the home uses only the water it can capture and reuse from the property. Water flows through an intricate system of filtration. Two main (or three including the pool) water reservoirs exist: the potable water reservoir covered by the grass patio, and the open-air reservoir (using aquatic plants, fish and a pump) for irrigation which resembles “cenotes”, open air water sources sacred to Mayans.
The water system relies on gravity and can store 30,000 liters; it provides enough water for the house all year round. Conceptually, this storm water management captures every drop of rain that touches the property (3800 square meters), uses it in different ways, and does not let a drop out. The result is abundant water and land that is constantly irrigated in a region with seasonal droughts.

Man they have it down pat. No water wasted at all, it can all be used and reused. The rest of the world could take lessons. Especially those western states that are draining their rivers and lakes and doing nothing to renew them.

France2107 wow way to blast the United States of America. As a true American there is only one thing I can say, your right. Not enough people know what it’s like to live without access to water or the importance of saving it. Though we are better than we were 20 years ago.

@C D Not really. *1)* Harvesting rain water isn't a luxury reserved for _"multimillionaires"_ at all. *2)* Is an inversion for your health, the environment and your budget. *3)* You can build your own setup, your imagination is your limit, not the budget. *4)* _Harvesting the rain water _*_DOES_*_ help to recharge not only the rivers but also the aquifers,_ since all the rain-water that a house (either in rural or urban areas) could catch within his roof is a relatively very small portion and then it would be slowly released within the landscape, that has been proved over and over to benefit the recharge of aquifers, rivers, re-green the desert, it could be used to grow food for a family, etc. *Check Brad Lancaster,* he talks about all that in a masterful and very practical way.

So many of the places on this channel are just Airbnbs. I have a real issue with that. Airbnbs are causing the cost of housing to rise all over the world, and it is causing problems for low income residents. I am interested in these houses because I want to LIVE in one. I don't want to use it to profit from and disrupt the economy for my neighbors.

This is beautiful. At 48,000 gallons, that's massive. A comparison between the earthship water design and this could make a nice hybrid system. They are very close with only a few differences. There was no mention of grey water toilets and the saltwater pool output will require a different set of plants down the watershed in a permaculture design.
@lalotz

I would love to live like this. I wander how do they keep the snakes out? Any ideas? I plan to build a home that is mostly open-air but we are planning to have it elevated to keep most creatures out but I would love to have the bottom floor mostly open to back yard as well.

I agree with you, it is such a beautiful location, and must be even more spectacular when the waterfall is running. It surprised me that the surroundings were so green without rain for many months. I prefer a different less austere design, but loved the way it opened out into nature and the water system there is fantastic. I would feel anxious about 'creatures' coming into the house ...................in Portugal I stayed a a property with a forest, and even pine/eucalyptus forests are full of bugs that bite.

The home is amazing from nature to the architectural. Giving back to mother !! How did the owner go about getting permission to construct in such a beautiful place in Mexico. Would any Latino/Latina be as fortunate to be giving the permission to construct something similar in the United States. How many and what type of visas would one need. Although it is a brilliant idea I hope the natives of Mexico are not hurt any any way shape or form by modern construction. I hope that everyone can benefit and enjoy God's creation and not just the person that has the most money.

Pure Mexican talent; many countries can learn from their design and ingenuity on passive architecture, Lots of respect for what they accomplished with this house. I hope I can see more of this, thank you for sharing.

Interesting video But I'm curious what cenote Ik Kil in Yucatan at the beginning has to do with this house south of Mexico City?

spikefivefivefive - The main idea is to understand water in a holistic way like Mayas/Aztecas did, specially Mayas!!

@@erickruiz728 Aztecs did very well, they built a city in the middle of a big lake, and the spaniels destroy it then dry the lake and built a second city over the previous balanced aztec city.
