I work in the printing industry, since COVID we have been having lots of issues with our paper stock being stock, AND our ink quality has turn to complete shit. Also our machines are falling apart and replacement parts just aren't available.

The goblin nose issue is easy to understand. AI art generation struggles putting big noses on goblins. It wants to use make them elves.

The SLD should be focusing on offering great Illustrations, they sell well if the cards are useful. The Special Guest cards are amazing and I am glad they are a thing now, I hope they continue to make them. I only get SLD if it's an Artist series that I like, or if it has Faeries in it (I collect them and play them) And the only UB I would get as a Secret Lair would be Jem & The Hollograms.

How to make Secret Lair a success: 1. Print cards people want 2. Bundle them on theme 3. Commission beautiful alternate art 4. Put them in the retro border (this one’s for me)

I haven't looked at the math to know for sure but whenever I browse secret lairs on Scryfall, it seems like most of them balance out to be roughly break-even with the purchase price, often heavily weighted on a single card. Only very few actually end up being worth a lot, and equally few end up being worthless. So as always, if you enjoy the art and have plans to use the cards, buy em and enjoy em. Otherwise leave them alone. As investments they are pretty trash.

I get what people are saying about the Goblin redesign trying to fight antisemitism, but if you really look into it, that negative connotation of large noses runs even deeper. When race science started to become a mainstream thing in the late 18th century in Europe, something that came along with it was a concept called physiognomy. This was a way of prescribing moral characteristics and values to certain facial features, and led to a lot of really messed up stuff to uphold and enforce the cultural and ethnic hegemony of pale Christian Europeans, including antisemitic categorization of large crooked noses as belonging to deceptive and uncouth bad actors. This is the context on which institutional antisemitic discrimination was built in post-WWI Germany, as well as the horrific American tenets of eugenics that were being formalized into law at around that time. I think that WOTC wants to get out from under the thumb of Goblins being described in appearance through physiognomic discrimination as a reflection of anxieties and hatred in mid-19th to early-20th century central Europe. Some of their moves very much overstep into virtue signalling, but this was a private document that sought to curtail discrimination, and I agree with their decision. One need only look at some of the comments on this video to tell that antisemitism is still rampant. My dear grandmother was Jewish before marrying my Irish Catholic grandfather, and her parents came to the US (but first, Cuba, as the US also had a horse in this race) as children escaping cruel discrimination in Russia and Romania, and she doesn't deserve the vitriol and ignorance in our society.

Wizards probably stopped caring about card quality in Japan because no one here is buying Wizards product. Pokemon is still the number one card game, and of course Yu-Gi-Oh and Weiss-Schwartz are still popular. Magic is certainly played, but it's nowhere near Pokemon in terms of sales or interest.

What’s even crazier than the shitty card quality and inflated prices is that peeps are literally throwing money at these fools.

I can see AI being incredibly useful for them to evaluate card designs and test against the meta, but not so much for art. A game that prides itself on its human-created art should steer well clear of AI art. Magic isn't some fly-by-night Kickstarter TCG, Wizards!

I love Miku, but the artwork for the Secret Lair was so awful for me that I couldn’t bring myself to buy it. But in the end art is subjective and I wish that those Secret lairs got to Hatsune Miku fans that really liked the cards instead of scalpers trying to inflate prices in the secondary market… oh wait!!…

the traditional goblin design has antisemetic roots, with the nose often being an exaggerated stereotype so i see why they are changing it. I mean, its dumb, no one was saying the goblins are antisemetic, but woke is woke 🤷

They are changing the design of goblins specifically because wizards of the coast seem to think that the old goblin design is an antisemitic stereotype. So they want to change their appearance. This is a thing that people accused JK rolling of doing in her books.

The problem with the most recent secret lair products was poor card design (lack of rules text ect, or cringe card themes...) and crap card value.

Ive never been happier to have left this anti consumer company in the dust. Imagine paying a premium for the equivalent of keychains out of those gacha machines...

Its good to see politically motivated censorship exerting censorship in clearly non-political card games again. That is very much needed to save the rights of individuals suffering under social dismissal and not just the purses of a few litigious individuals as usual.

The reason for the goblin "redesign" is because one of the DEI consultants said the noses were a reference to a religion that has a certain star shape associated with it and they needed to distance themselves from that imagery because of the "Harry Potter" crowd. This is the stupidity happening behind the scenes.

I am a decent artist and a decent AI prompter and I make much better art than much of MTG art. I have always been disappointed in MTG's art because there is some good art but so much of it is bad and out of place it just drags the rest down. The best part of using Ai is you can rapidly prototype your ideas, and train it to have a certain style, lighting, colors, etc. Then you can take multiple images it gives you, correct the anatomy how you want and do a good job in photoshop with the smudge and liquify tool, and get a great picture. AI is just another tool like photoshop that can increase your efficiency. It is up to the artist to make sure the anatomy is good. If you look at the full size art of Liliana of the veil, you will notice the anatomy and lighting is actually pretty bad, her legs are all screwed up, it's just hidden off the card. If I was in charge of the art for MTG I would want the artist to use AI too and give them tools to work with where I can do some quality control. However do I trust Wizards to do this? No. They have shown already that they don't care about quality, correct anatomy, style, color consistency, or composition. I don't trust whoever is in charge to have any taste in art.

Goblins in certain depictions can be used as antisemitic caricatures, with the biggest modern example being the goblins from the Harry Potter franchise. Personally, I don't think the MtG goblins really invoke those stereotypes apart from having big noses, I guess, so I don't personally think this was a necessary change. The vast majority of MtG goblins are chaotic and mischievous creatures that love machinery and explosions, not greedy and malicious ruling class bankers.

Miku is a proof they should only do waifu secret lairs if they want to make real money. As for the goblin's noses, I can think of a different long-nosed tribe that could be the reason.
