One choice at a time is great life advice as well as quilting advice! I can't start a new project right now, but I really want to make something like this!
Kristen, you approach this improv like the artist you are. There is meaning or reason in every decision. I so appreciate your sharing your thought processes. It helps me, as I am learning how to free myself from traditional quilting constraints and also become more adept at working with colors. I need to learn from others because my inner creativity is buried so deep that I have difficulty tapping it. So, thanks for such videos. I watch every one of yours!
Brava!!! It turned out great. And whoa, you did it all soooooo fast!! As some one else said: Thanks for letting us inside your head with your decision making process. You rock!
Great sew-along. I actually enjoy your spontaneous format better than a more planned approach. I like this method; i.e. making it up as I go and fitting sections together like puzzle pieces. I don't do it all the time, but it's a pleasant adventure when I do. 🙂
Yes wait to trim up till after the line stitching is done. That usually distorts the surface a bit, but cutting the edge of raw stitching is no problem. I like both of your quilts done this way. ))) Its a bit of a push to get me out of traditional "same" blocks for the whole thing, but this could happen. ))) Not today. But not never. )))
Go ahead and sew on the paper sample. The thread and holes will show up on camera. Yes please NO MUSIC ))). The little turns are excellent addition to straight lines. Inspiring!
Working this style of quilt arrangement is better on the floor than a wall because there are no pins to deal with. Thanks for letting us in your head to shuffle pieces. )))
I really think you nailed the placement of the orange bits in this quilt---so balance and interesting! At some point I will have a go at a similar style quilt and send you pics. Love your channel!!!
Hey, Kristen! Thank you SO much for this latest segment! Over the course of this series, I’ve taken several screen snaps to use as a reference. Having followed both you and Fave @Dave’s Craft Room, I’m now quite comfortable with the design/ construction aspects of this process. Your quilting segment-yes, I took several screen snaps-has really given me the confidence to machine quilt my improv from a couple of years ago. I want to start that today-squirrel-but I HAVE to finish one of the donation quilts I’ve promised to my local hospice. I’m looking forward to seeing what others have done in your future segment. Thanks, and stay well! Muskoka ON 🇨🇦
I had so much fun doing this. I ended up with more of a “crazy quilt” from what I did. I used the same ideas but used up old cut offs from another quilt and then added solids. Blues, greens, and white were the colors. I just went until I felt like I was done with it. A good sized throw quilt. Not sure how to show you my quilt.
Well done Kristen! Liked how you also quilted it. That's where I usually struggle. It's hard to decide how to quilt it. I enjoyed the segment on quilting on a domestic machine. That helped me so much to keep most of the bulk out, from the right of the needle! Thank you.
It turned out amazing!!! Once my machine is working again I'll definitely be making a quilt like this!! My colors with be Christmas themed, traditional red and green with a gold yellow swirly sparkly as the background! Thanks for sharing!
Enjoyed this! I did white background, mainly blue tiny bits and for the accent shocking Japanese material (not cotton!) Now just waiting to quilt it. Thanks the the quilt along.😢
WOW! You are so much more than a quilter/sewist/ or maker. This is Art! I love how you repurposed your drapes! I've repurpoesed old heavier panels from the early 2000's into shopping tote bags. We went to the market one day and my husband said, these bags remind me of the old house. LOL
😂 that is hilarious! My husband would be the same! He held up the quilt and said he liked the back and I had to point out it was one of the curtains 😂. Thanks for your kind words as well 💕
So I’m in the middle of a block swap and we are making crumb blocks. Wasn’t sure how I was going to like it, but after a few blocks I found it very freeing. This sewalong seems like it would feel the same. I found it after you finished, but I’m inspired to try it. The only thing that gave me a “clutch my pearls” moment is when you randomly rotary cut your background fabric into hunks! I think I’ll have to do some deep breathing before I jump into that. But I really want to try the process!
If it makes it less scary you can pick some set sizes for the background fabric. You don’t have to follow everything I do if trying to do that becomes a barrier. Make it work for you!
It is wonderful! Just really love it. (The music in the previous video made my dog bark and go wild! LOL I wanted to tell you but did not want you to think I was complaining. It was pretty startling...)
I'm so impressed with your entire process! I loved hearing your thought processes. It is so not like me. I'm way too rigid to feel free enough to try your approach. That said, never say never! Congrats on your lovely quilt!
Oooohhhh!! This quilt turned out beautiful. And I love how you quilted it. Watching you quilt it was relaxing to watch. I mentioned that I had a quilt I'm working on that I could quilt along, in the future. But then realized my quilt really doesn't quite look right for this. But I most certainly want to make a quilt like this. Thank you.
I liked it too but it seems like it came on for a lot of folk at like 3 times the volume of the talking or something and I don’t know how to fix it so I’m going to steer clear of the music until I can figure it out 🤦🏼♀️
Love the quilt! I am so admiring of your talent with improv! Wish my improv looked as good. 😂 did you make your top? Is it a sweatshirt or a sweater? ❤
It’s a sweatshirt. My sister bought me a slogan sweatshirt that said ‘this is my too tired to function jumper’ - I am always tired but pride myself on functioning perfectly fine on no sleep 😂 so I covered the words up with a Tula pink cameo 😂.
I put a 20” square ruler at a corner and then lined up 2 longer rulers above it along each edge of the quilt. Basically once you find the square angle at the bottom corner and trim you are following that line up the side by butting the rulers up against each other. Hope that makes sense!
Kristen, that turned out beautifully. Another masterpiece. I had difficulty seeing the certain areas you were pointing to and wondered if you could use a long (but light) stick or something of that nature in future? When the background and the floor are almost the same in colour it is hard to determine the areas/blocks being talked about, especially for 'older' eyes such as mine. I applaud your work and look forward to seeing more. I trust your son and others are feeling better. You have a beautiful spirit.
You are totally right about the lighting/camera angles. I am very much still learning about making videos and I know lighting is one of my weak spots. I will do my best to improve it! Thanks for the feedback!
