Modern Sonnet 241. That Old Belief in Progress.
We used to think the future dangerous
Because who knew the new behind its doors?
Now what tomorrow has in store for us
Is nothing we’ve not failed to face before.
That bogus old belief in progress broke
And spilled a killing, acid apathy,
That once stayed in our skin, but then awoke
To find no forward bright-lit scenery,
So sloshed around our expectations, stopped,
Then settled, burnt a hole right through the floor,
And left us looking downwards as the clocks,
Hung Daliesque, fell screaming from the walls.

Who once held on to dreams of what would come,

Now grasp at memories of all that’s gone.
Lockdown Sonnet Twenty-three.
Andrew Barker.

I do not grasp at memories; I wallow in them!

Been there too. The truths we twist to hit iambic pentameter, hey?

One has to be young or dull to believe in a constant upward arc of human progress anyway.

On second reading, I am intrigued who the 'we' (first word) are ? Sounds to me, the 'we' is the collective today society. There is something rotten in the state of, not, Denmark, but the world. The killing, acid apathy is very powerful. Life, we were told is so precious; seize the day etc. The reality is often high stress/ anxiety. A population so immersed in Johnny Depp & tom cruise. There is something going on which the net has made exponential. So many cant separate Johnny from Captain jack sparrow. And mr scientology from Maverick, it depresses me. Bombarded by porn and school shootings. War and lying politicians/media. My guilty escape is falling asleep to the sound of Alan Rickman reading the Return Of The Native. Your work is thought provoking and a sort of therapy. So thank you.

As always thanks for your kind words. This is one of the Lockdown Sonnets so the social malaise under discussion is more specific and linked to that time, particularly 2020, when the situation was very different from today. But you are right about he WE being society and not, what I think is still called the Royal WE. What I was hoping to get at is that the problems society faces are no longer ones of NOT knowing what might happen. Now we DO know. And the belief that things will get better for humanity is no longer sustainable.

Hello Andrew, I love this Salvador Dali painting and I used it in one of my poems. Its a really a great and warning painting. Since I have never heard so far this word: Daliesque, I tried to find it: adjective of, pertaining to, resembling, or characteristic of the surrealist art of Salvador Dali: giant advertising posters depicting Daliesque distortions of everyday objects. So I really appreciate your poem again and again... I have translated into Hungarian the Jenny to Marx and it was wonderful to work with it. I will translate this, too. Thanks and have great times with poetry and with your family. Hello from Hungary, Violet.

Thank you, Violet. Which poems people especially respond to always interests me. This one was written in 2020, when Coronavirus was still especially prevalent, but getting to be boring. A kind of violent apathy had set in, which is a nice oxymoron in itself.

Love the Dali imagery and personification in this one, Andy. But is there an upbeat alternative version? A sort of cup-half-full perspective?

It was written during Coronavirus so . . . I've been reading a lot of the sonnets today to see what order to put them in the forthcoming collections, and though I really don't see myself as negative, cynical or even pessimistic there does appear to be a lot of "glass half empty" stuff in my writing, doesn't there?.
