How they can cultivate thousands of tons of spirulina to generate hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue every year. Spirulina is known as blue-green algae that grows both in fresh as well as salt water. Similar to plants it produces energy from sunlight through the photosynthesis process. It grows and thrives in warm water alkaline ponds and rivers. Protein is one of the important components in a diet. It is one of the best potential sources of protein. This protein in Spirulina is grown commercially in large-scale culture systems for human as well as animal consumption. Spirulina contains 40 to 80% protein content and its growth rate is very high. For its growth, it requires less water, land, and can grow in any climate in tropical regions. In commercial aquacultures such as fish, prawn, and livestock; Spirulina either in the wet or dried form is used as a complementary dietary ingredient. In developing countries, it is used as a potential source of food, feed, and fuel. For human nutrition, it is cultivated in large scale in clean waters and under controlled conditions while it is also grown in wastewaters and can be used in animal feed.

I can assure the cost and processing rack up to be more expensive than the regular old food. Otherwise there wouldn't be such a huge fail of farms like these or the hydroponic farms who can't find enough customers to survive. It is a very niche and expensive market. The "greeniest" 'alternative' is going right for regular non extremely thirsty (avocado and others) plants.

Post-harvest processing is still too complicated. Also, the risk of contamination is still too high, meaning an advance water processing plant is needed behind the main spirulina production line, a highly expensive process overall & energy intensive. Spirulina makes me wonder what happened. UNESCO , in the 1960s was touting the discovery of great nutritional value of this algae and its ready availability because of easy cultivation as the hope of ample cheap protein for the masses of the world’s poor. Now it’s become a big business which only the rich can afford.
@leonardmiyata482
@leonardmiyata482 Год назад
Spirulina is an excellent source of protein, but cultivation could be a problem as it is naturally found growing in lakes of volcanic lye... And in its native growing range (and not limited to Aztec controlled regions) it was generally considered as a food source of last resort. (Which means if your only choice was starving to death, or eating slimy green pond scum growing in lakes of volcanic lye...) It also contains large amounts of vitamin B-12, making it one of the few source for vegetarian B-12, but this is one of its problems. It contain so much B-12 that regular consumption can result in unrecoverable numbing of the extremities caused by nerve death from chronic B-12 poisoning...

I wish it was more accurate. Spirulina is not a proper "algae" (used nowadays for eukaryotic organisms) but a Cyanobacterium (yes, a prokaryote, a Bacterium), from the genus Arthrospira - Spirulina just sounds easier and sells better. The culture solution does not need "oxygenation" as the organism releases oxygen under photosynthesis - actually so much that it can die from it. The culture needs to be agitated to allow the oxygen to dissipate, and new carbon dioxide to enter the water. The foul odor (or stagnant water smell) comes from geosmin produced by Spirulina - humans naturally avoid a strong geosmin smell because it i a warning for possible water contamination (you would not drink from a flower pot run-off either - that's where Arthrospira live). And a warning: some strains of Cyanobacteria are known to produce dangerous toxins, such as microcystins and anatoxins; most cultivated Spirulina are safe, but ...

is there a reason it can't be harvested in a continuous manner instead of batches? like keep the ponds at peak growth point? and partial harvest at all times?
@aSinisterKiid
@aSinisterKiid Год назад
Because you basically can only grow it in batches due to how it grows naturally. Algae doesn't really grow in fresh running water. It grows in stagnant sitting water. So basically the farmers create a large body of standing water that has the algae seeded into it and then wait for it to grow really dense. If they kept flushing fresh water into this mixture then the algae wouldn't grow any further. It needs lots of oxygen, sunlight and standing water basically. This is really simplified of course but its hard to explain in a few words. The biggest problem with the whole process is still contamination because harmful bacteria can easily grow as well. Think of it like trying to grow algae in a jar. If you leave the jar sitting in the sun it will start to grow algae eventually depending on the bacteria in the water. But if you keep taking half the water out and putting fresh water in, the jar never has the right conditions for the algae to grow dense or even grow at all. Part of the process for algae is highly oxygenated water that is standing still.

Also who says our bodies need too much of one bacteria? I know that a variety of bacteria is required and only for proper digestion and metabolism, its not about how much we can grow out side but its how we cultivate them on the inside is the key in my opinion...

Was thinking every greenhouse should replace their shade clothes for algae tube lattice. One question I would have is the nutrients. The water should be treated like an aquaponics farm. Otherwise you just have all external plants with no good nutrients. Not to mention the water should be filtered of all micro organisms prior to use. Don’t see this as a food market item for mass consumption, but definitely for animal and fish feed. We definitely need to rethink how our food systems work.

"algae will grow at a very fast rate if it is rotated and oxygenated" no, your algae doesn't need to be oxygenated. They're producing lots of oxygen by photosynthesis, and they only need to consume a small amount of it back by respiration during their hours of darkness. What they do need is aeration. But they need that air for the carbon dioxide in it, not for the oxygen!

At the present time, in our world, there are still people that know what real food is. They know which plants to eat and which ones make medicine. If they want to eat meat, they know which ones are best to eat how to grow or harvest them, how to cook and preserve them. In our attempts to feed our over populated planet, we are getting farther and farther away from traditional foods. In the case of something cutting off our food supply; say Amazon is no longer able to deliver manufacturered 'healthy' meals to the door of houses whose kitchen use is limited to the fridge and microwave, the disaster would be beyond comprehension.

Pollution is the problem, not overpopulation. We need natural, closed loop systems and local everything, as people lived several generations ago.

Personally, i prefer to have algae as bio-fuels, like bio-diesel or bio-gas

Realistically, we wouldn't need very much fuel at all. Cars aren't sustainable.
