A lot of people were wondering how modern controls and classic controls would be when street fighter 6 released. Are they good? Are they godtier? Do they make anyone who picks up and puts time into street fighter 6 pro level? I think it's a lot deeper than that, and that's partially why I made this video. Regardless of what your preferred control type is, just enjoy the fact that now more than ever people are playing fighting games. That's a big win for everyone involved. This was very much a passion project and I spent the last week working on it. It was my first time doing something like this and I enjoyed every step of the way. I've spent a lot of time on the outside of the FGC looking in, but now I've been making a big effort to be involved and part of it.
If you like the content here and would like to see more, follow me on my socials, I post often, give updates on videos, streams, edits, post clips, even my own merch store, etc.

I really love how approachable the modern era of fighting games is. I've talked to a lot of people that got into fighting games because of Strive and its more beginner friendly feel, and I'd imagine SF6 with modern controls will do that even more. Really good video! Subbed

I’m just gonna say this, Modern greatly shortens/eliminates the human error when doing moves. Like I could mess up a lv3 and throw the match, but a modern player can crank out a super quickly almost without error.

I remember reading that the SF6 director said that the point of modern controls is for beginners to get used to the feel of SF6 until they feel comfortable enough to learn the classic style controls. Just my opinion but i really do feel like the pro players that are defending modern controls are completely missing the point. They're likely enjoying the ease of modern inputs being allowed in tournaments or, those who aren't, are unwilling to rock the boat in the discussion. The thumbnail of this video really says it all. Modern controls brings relatively quick and easy victory with low mental stress, while classic will stress you out and make defeat more likely in the name of integrity. Much like griffith and guts represent in their Manga respectively.

Phenomenal video. Earned a subscriber and thank you, thank you, thank you. I have trying to make my friends who play sf6 with me understand why I switched to modern. I have always struggled with mental stack and especially consistent execution. I switched to modern when I realized that was the purpose. It by NO MEANS makes wins easier to come by however, like you so accurately explained, modern allows me to execute consistently and focus primarily on the game's core mechanics. I have been having a blast playing with modern online because I feel like I am fighting my opponent, not fighting my opponent along with my controls. i can't tell you how many times I have dropped combos on a perfect punish opportunity because I messed up an input. That is not fun to me. Modern gets rid of that issue.

I really loved this video, you really explained every facet of the big picture surrounding Modern and Classic controls nicely. This topic is one that I've involved myself in quite a bit since SF6 has come out, because I truly believe there isn't a control scheme that's better than the other. At least not in the level of play most people are working with. Nobody should feel lesser for playing what works better for them, and nobody should be hurtful towards players using control schemes that were designed for players like them to get into a new genre of game they haven't tried before. Modern controls are beautiful, and as far as classic players go, they shouldn't worry about it. If you get beat by modern controls, and claim that's the only reason you lost; Modern controls aren't what you should be worried about haha. I rambled a bit here, but great video. I really liked it!
@biglaodam
@biglaodam 9 месяцев назад
The only issue I think that is not addressed is if you're not a pro players it's difficult to fight modern control players. Obviously the pros can adjust but if you a silver or gold player we Obviously don't adjust like the pros so it's very difficult to beat a modern player of the same rank.
@BlueLightningSky
@BlueLightningSky 8 месяцев назад
But you don't have to be a pro to counter them, this is like complaining an easy character exists in the game and we've had easy characters in fighting games for a long time. You think a silver or gold player on classic would rather fight a modern Luke or a classic down back Guile or Dhalsim that knows how to play that character? It's just another character that you have to deal with.
@blueperseverance3912
@blueperseverance3912 8 месяцев назад
@@BlueLightningSky it's not about the easier character but about the concept of accessibility and fairness. Why would I fight someone in rank as a beginner who is also a the same level of knowledge of me but has dumbed down easy to access controls and combos on top of one button press reversals and supers but I don't. Or are we gonna drop the git good elitism dilemma? I am a firm believer that modern controls should not be allowed in rank nor tournaments since it defeats their initial design purpose of being a introduction point to new players and turning into some kind of exploit no matter the drawbacks that it comes with it.

Bait the wakeup bullshit out and don't jump in too much, a lot of them at lower ranks like to spam one move in specific situations to catch you off guard and once you can recognize it and punish they'll usually start playing more carefully

the one thing modern gives over classic is a way out of certain checkmate scenarios, if your burned out in a corner you know at some point that drive impact is coming with a meaty setup or other setup, and nothing you can do on classic but on modern as long as you have super you have an easy escape.
@MaximumObesity
@MaximumObesity 11 месяцев назад
The same is true for classic. Yeah it’s one button on modern, but it’s not that hard to super on reaction to drive impact. Like all things, it just takes practice modern or not. Or grab. Which works too.

All of these are from a random tournament I pulled up and a random tiktok I saw the other day. It's not the easiest thing to do, and yes it's easier on modern. The curious thing is: I have seen many videos on the topic of Modern controls. Beginner tier players don't mind Modern, because they either need it, don't care, or will use Classic from the start. They are simply trying the game as it is. They'll either move past others using it, or possibly reflect in the pros and cons as time goes on and switch. Intermediate tier players (may) care because of the experience of fighting against them, (instant response, Supers, Critical Arts, etc.) which is frustrating when you view the people beating you as being inexperienced and these Modern players being carried by the controls. I don't necessarily agree, but I can empathize how demoralizing it may be if you're on the receiving end. I'm sure at this level, they want new people to put the time and effort they had to, and the idea of a "shortcut" makes them feel invalidated. Since Modern controls to Classic aren't a 1 to 1, that also invites the "they wouldn't beat me with Modern controls" mindset. In a equal playing field (i.e. Bronze vs Bronze), that boost in execution of moves would probably tip the scales. Eliminating the "thinking" part of execution does count for a lot. And of course, Master-level Professional tier players don't care even more because it's the 10% of players who go to tournaments and win the big bucks. Now, they are Professional players now who will use Modern will come up eventually, but it'll probably still be niche. (I never thought of Mental Stack, but it does identify an issue I've had with fighting Modern players when I've been in bad situations. Everything you've mentioned is probably right.) The only people who "lose" here is the Intermediate tier players who feel cheated because of the feeling of "instant combos" and "instant CA" punishing them when they know the Modern players would not be able to punish them otherwise. The only "advice" they get is to just "get good" when it is not that simple. I know that is the mantra of Fighting Games, but it ain't very helpful to those people. I know as a community, we want to welcome others (and to be frank I don't agree with the detractors in this video) but don't forget about the people who are already here. Being disparaging isn't going to change peoples' minds, but all I've seen is people making fun of anyone bringing up issues, whether valid or not. It is interesting, though.

This is my big issue, and why I have been playing Tekken recently and not Street Fighter. Almost nobody I run across in Tekken uses simple, but in SF6 modern is everywhere. And exactly like you said, it sucks for me as someone who is learning this genre for the first time to finally learn different concepts and apply them, string together simple combos, play more consciously, just for someone mashing one button to combo half my life bar away when I know without modern, their punish would convert into a fraction of that. At this point I feel like I am working so much harder for the same result. I'm learning frame punishes, anti-airs, managing my bars, pokes, footsies, movement, throw tech, and all of this other stuff, and this guy I am fighting can just ignore the most difficult part of that learning, implementing damaging combos, put that on auto pilot, and get huge payout from pressing 2 buttons 6 times, where I would have to have 30 well time inputs for that same result. It just feels like I am allowed to make less mistakes, both in combo execution and whiff punishes, than my opponent, which sucks and makes me not want to play.

I think Modern mode is fine, but they should make you commit to the damage reduction when using it online. Like, “You wanna overcome the execution barrier and have invincible supers on a single button press? Ok, but you’re gonna eat damage loss.” I think it’s nuts that if you perform the inputs manually, it allows Modern players to maintain full damage, but still have invincible reversals at the press of a button.

Back in the day if you had a modded controller that did one button dp and fireball it would be considered cheating, the problem about modern is that there is no input error. Most would argue that just doing moves don’t win matches which is correct. If you put a high level modern player and a high level classic player the modern player will have the advantage. The issue with Modern Controls is like playing Devil May Cry on Auto and let the game play itself for you and throw out moves randomly and some that might be beneficial and deal a ton of damage. In street fighters case, like Ed for example some of the moves and unique attacks are locked unless you playing classic controls. Modern Controls is made specifically to give new fighting game players, not just new Street fighter players, training wheels and when you are ready you can switch to classic at any given time. If you are still playing street fighter with modern Controls, I'm sorry but you are hopeless and might as we play a different fighting game. But hey what do I know?

Will it be an even playing field? Definitely not.

If you're both playing on classic controls and one person is using an arcade stick and one is using a stickless layout, there is no advantage. You're playing on what is comfortable for you. I used to use arcade stick all the time, until I switched to a hitbox because after playing SF for 20+ years my wrist pain couldn't let me execute my moves on stick without the pain, now I've just transferred my knowledge of the game to my hitbox and it works better for me, but you still have to get adjusted to it from regular stick. The point being two knowledge people playing the game on both an arcade stick and a hitbox, it doesn't necessarily mean one or the other is going to win or has a better chance, it's about their fundamentals and how they play during the match. A pad player could easily beat a stick or hitbox player, as long as they have the skill they can do it. Everything comes with practice and determination.

Only things I hate is unbalanced autocombo. Ken got solid combo without gauge when all Jamie's combo is just waste move. (But they all sucks in higher competitive play anyway) I really hope It would change to be functional just like another normal we lost instead. (So now we trade some move with harder input than Classic instead of just lose It) I like the Idea of super on reaction. I feel bored that super being only fancy combo-ender 99% of time. If Remy return he could use his counter move more effectively. Anti-air super become more possible but their damage should be balanced out with their range/speed. Like, universal easy to hit like Luke should have more lower damage than others. while specific use like anti-air or even counter(If It'd have) should have much more damage.

For me its not even an issue of which is better, more so which is fun to play against/spectate. One button supers and reversals lead to a very reactionary playstyle. Sure modern doesn't "play for you", but it's undeniable that reacting with a button press is easier than with a motion. And those moments of great reactions become undermined by the nature of its input. Also modern players have less options which leads to less unique combo routes/setups/frametraps. And less options for me leads to more same-y feeling games. Like we celebrated the return of more robust movelists in SF6 after SFV streamlined away many of character specials, and now with modern we get a version of a character with less moves which is somehow celebrated by some part of community.

But seriously M controllers is unfair especially when I'm faced with a Modern Manon I'm a classic Manon Main, the modern Manon can out command grab the shiiiii out of me.

Modern controllers are like selling your soul to the devil for easy access to doing power moves easy. Which makes you not to good has a player but its a start for beginners that started playing. Classic controllers make your work real hard at doing moves but if you get the moves down an adapt to it you'll be a combo impact demon keeping pressure on your opponent automatically. Thats the way i see it i use to play modern 1 year ago. M EASY ACCESS C working HARDER for moves.

Classic is better than modern. Anyone that complains about modern just isn’t very good at the game. And that should be their main concern instead of what control type their opponent is using

Nah modern is stupid you literally get to one button dps so jumping at them is impossible 1 button combos and specials a normal human being shouldn't be using modern

Classic is better than modern, that's for sure. But modern also has its unfair advantage. It's like you are using pencil and paper to solve equation, but your opponent is using a calculator.

nah modern controllers are for bozos that aren’t willing to play the game actually. pressing one button of bones to pull out a decent combo relentlessly is absolutely stupid. modern controls should never have been made

I would have never considered playing this game on classic at all. Im playing modern screw classic it makes no sense to have outdated and overly difficult controls like that. And thats coming from someone who is top 1% in battle royale and a few other fps titles....

Modern controller is BS it's cheap and for lazy players it's the worse thing in SF6 they turning sf6 into mortal Kombat 3 up to mk trilogy with 1 button finishing smhh and it's worse than mk3 to trilogy because in SF6 the special move is 1 button smhh modern controller shouldn't be in SF6 if the PS controller was touch screen it would be ok but its not so it shouldn't be in SF6 at all modern controller as i say is cheap and for lazy players

Modern controls are mad easy to fight with, like why would I basically break my fingers just to a hadoken when I can just press triangle😭 only thing that’s good about classic is, it’s more random moves, like when I pressed O it didn’t do a heavy punch, but it did some type of spin kick
@IStareAtGames

It’s what makes street fighter street fighter, the fact that you have to actually train to do combos, that fact that it takes skill, hell it makes all fighting games, having easy mode controls is just dumb, I know sf is trying to reel in more people to play but it’s nit fair for the older players that have to do motion inputs while these nincompoops can just press 2 buttons to do a level three super that took the other player a month to learn and memorize
@extremepop324

Easy modes forced into the main game is going to kill fighting games. We need to take better care of fighting games and not just allow "whatever happens, happens"

Modern controls are cheap as hell and I don't like them lmao. They shouldn't be in the game. Anytime I run into a Cammy with modern controls i throw up a little. It's not hard to learn classic at all, in fact it's way less intimidating than I thought it was.
@094176
@094176 8 месяцев назад
Gotta disagree. They literally are missing chunks of their moveset. JP with modern controls can't control the screen anywhere near as well as a classic one. If not having to do a simple input makes a an opponent feel cheap to you, I got bad news about the opponents to whom those inputs are second nature

Modern controls are something we need because like it or not fighting games arent the easiest to get into especially with motion inputs for me i like classic i like having more options but my ring finger is a wall to me being better than i could be (i am relatively new to fighting games) it prevents me from doing quarter circle backs properly and that doesnt feel very great and doing online and losing alot isnt very fun i like improving i like the challenge of losing but even the most determined of man could only lose so much before they just quit

It increased sales, and helped a lot of people learn fighting games or have more fun with them. I’m fine with people not wanting to use it or even not always enjoying fighting it but I really don’t get the hate. Like literally today I saw an AKI player with the user name “modern is lame” and refused to fight me. In a casual match mind you. I feel if the haters spent half the time labing as they do alienating a much smaller part of the player pool they’d get out of plat and see like 1 modern player every 39 matches.
