+ Toby Hodkinson -- You are correct; it's a #4, not a b5. Because the Lydian Mode ALREADY has a Perfect 5th. You can't have duplicate intervals.(usually) There is an exception, I think, but this isn't it. Can anyone remember what it is? Another revelation for guitar players: G# isn't a key. (Ab is though)

Christian Kern +++ You are welcome. My pleasure. The basic rule is that you cannot have two of the same interval numbers or letter notes in any single scale. They even use double sharps and double flats where needed to avoid this problem.
@martinpalmer3575
@martinpalmer3575 7 лет назад
Indeed, diminished RE: double flats., 1, b3, b5, bb7.... Definitely no b5 in the lydian, contextually speaking, a b5 is incredibly dark, an augmented 4th is not dark at all.

Sean, I notice you chose to play a Fmaj7 for the I chord on the jam. That seems to be the perfect choice because it contains the E which is the sharp 4 of the B Lydian scale .Was that intentional to get the modal feel? Would it work just as well with a regular F Maj. I'm trying to work backwards and figure out when to go modal in a jam. Is it based on the chords? IE if we are jamming a maj7 then Lydian works best etc?
@seandaniel23
@seandaniel23 6 лет назад
You're right on! It definitely works well with an F major isn't of the major 7 chord, but I think in a two person jam, the rhythm player hitting that F major 7 just leads the lead play that much more into a Lydian type thing if that makes sense.

@verandi3882 7 лет назад
that was an awesome lesson , the lydian sounds happily unstable,but I have a question , isn't a flat five called tritone? and as you mentioned before a flat five is also a sharp four so in this case which notes do you play? and by that I mean do you play the 4 and the b5 and skip the 5 or you play 3, then #4 and after it 5 ? and thank you :)
@seandaniel23
@seandaniel23 7 лет назад
Great question. So in Lydian, you still have a regular 5, essentially I would think about it as 'skipping' any one note, but instead take a regular 4, and just alter it by moving it one fret (or semitone) higher, everything will be exactly the same as the major scale :)

Sean Daniel thank you,
@andromydous
@andromydous 7 лет назад
Please correct me if I am wrong. Been having ups and downs with modes. Frustrated because I feel I should be understanding it. I believe it's starting to click. Other than the Ionian and maybe the Aeolian, if you avoid the tonic chord (G) in the parent major scale (G major) and start with the tonic chord (C) of the mode, then (C)Lydian sounds good. I only surmise this, because anytime I throw the parent tonic chord (G), the lead feels like it wants to resolve to that. Which would make it sound more Ionian than Lydian.

Great lesson I love you guys. By the way what is tritone? Sure I'll look it up right now but your take on it is always appreciated
@seandaniel23
@seandaniel23 7 лет назад
So a tritone is the distance between a note and the flattened 5th note of its major scale. So for example, on one string of a guitar, it would be 6 frets difference, or 3 steps, hence the 'tri'tone

24 years (off and on) of playing guitar and I still have problems wrapping my head around modes. Some say only use the mode over corresponding chords. Others say you can use it over any chord within the chosen key. Then, there's the question of which chords within the key best fit the mode. For example, Fmaj vs F7. I seen another video using lydian by someone else. His sounded soulful, dreamy, and slightly haunting, while yours sounds upbeat. What makes the difference on how that mode affects your emotions?
7 лет назад
Sean, when you said "if you play the Bb Lydian mode by itself, you're essentially just playing the Fmaj scale", is that something you happen to know, or did you make some kind of quick 'calculation' on the notes that are in F maj and how theyre simular to Bb Lydian. Thanks!
@nicktaylor1902
@nicktaylor1902 7 лет назад
Lydian is a fourth (five semitones (five frets)) higher than the relative major. So for example A major's relative lydian mode is five frets higher (a a# b c c# d), so the relative Lydian mode is D Lydian> Hope this helped!
@seandaniel23
@seandaniel23 7 лет назад
Great explanation! Definitely always to of every mode in relation to the major scale, eventually you'll start seeing the notes as how far away they are from the main root note and the calculations just become second nature.

Sorry guys another little question the chords were from the major scale harmonization not from the lydian scale (The 4 th chord would have been diminished isn't it?) so it's a little clash with 5 and #5 note degrees between scale and chord... hope that's right
@seandaniel23
@seandaniel23 7 лет назад
Good question, if I understand it correctly, that's the main difference between a #4 and a b5. Because in Lydian, even though a tritone exists on the 4 chord, it still has it's regular perfect 5th interval, and to make a triad you use the 1, 3 and 5. So the fact the it has a #4 and not a b5 (even though they'd be the same note) means you build the chord with the regular 5th, meaning it would be major and not diminished. hope that made sense!
@ParsevalMusic
@ParsevalMusic 7 лет назад
Dear Daniel I read for the Lydian scales we have I II chords major, iii minor, iv° diminished.. here's the point.. so perhaps you didn't mean to play the lydian harmonization but some others chords over your friend scale if i don't get wrong... anyway tnx again great guys you are :))
@TheShoreman1
@TheShoreman1 7 лет назад
I think that Sean was calling the chords by the numbers relative to the parent major (F major) scale. But I think looking at it strictly as B Flat Lydian. the B flat chord would be the I chord and the F chord would be the V chord.
@avaron100
@avaron100 7 лет назад
I was jamming along with the backing track but most of the time it just sounded I was in the F major scale... What can I do?
@seandaniel23
@seandaniel23 7 лет назад
My advice would be to really get into that Bb Lydian shape and hammer home the notes Bb and E. Hopefully then you'll be able to hear a little bit of the dissonance of that interval.
@avaron100
@avaron100 7 лет назад
What if I jam to a track that is in the key of B flat rather than in F? Would that work? Thanks a lot.
@AlexStrabala
@AlexStrabala 7 лет назад
Philip Pirrip no. They are using the chord numbers incorrectly in this video. In Bb Lydian, F is the IV chord. In the Ionian mode the ii chord is minor, but in Lydian the II is major due to the #4. So if you play Bb Lydian over a regular Bb progression the #4 will sound really out of place.
@evanboyd6903
@evanboyd6903 7 лет назад
I can't wait till y'all cover my personal favorite mode, Locrian. I find that people over exaggerate it as being hard to use when it really isn't that hard. Staying in the key of F like y'all did and taking E as the new tonal center you can easily use an Em7b5 chord in 2nd inversion and remove the third to imply that locrian tone for a start. I Find that to be an easy and relatively simple approach to it. Maybe I'm using it wrong but that's how I view it and if I am I guess I'll find out how it's supposed to be used when y'all cover it.

Sharp 4. Flat 5 would imply that there is a natural or flat 4th in the scale with it.

ParsevalMusic Bb is the four chord of F major
@seandaniel23
@seandaniel23 7 лет назад
Exactly right! Bb is the 4th note of F, hence it's the 4th chord in the progression, hence it the 4th mode, Lydian.

Hey guys! I'm a big fan of you both and I have a complaint. It is incorrect to say there is a flat 5th if a perfect fifth also exists. Sharp 4th is the correct answer because lydian mode is the Ionian with a different 4th interval. Tl;dr 5b and 4# are not synonymous!
@nicktaylor1902
@nicktaylor1902 7 лет назад
well, they are, but it's just grammar
@timothyrice1621
@timothyrice1621 7 лет назад
But that is to imply that the seven interval Lydian Mode has zero 4th intervals and two 5ths. It is improper grammar, I agree, and therefore should be changed. Proper grammar is important for musicians so that they can accurately communicate with one another.

You're totally right there. I think they did correct it later in the video, though.

Right on man! I guess I just meant it as the spacing (tri-tone) is the same, but I do need to be more careful about articulating the difference. Thanks for the feedback!

@@seandaniel23 Sean I was told by a music teacher to form chord progressions around 1,2 and 7 chords and "highlight the 1,3,4,and 5 notes in the scale when soloing over these chords. Does this make sense to you...and if so is there any other advice you could offer? thank you, love both you guys channels.

Wait so if you're calling F the 1 chord, how is this any different than playing in F major? Asking for a friend...
@seandaniel23
@seandaniel23 6 лет назад
You're right, there would be no difference BUT I was more talking about treating the F major AS the 1 chord in the key of C. Which would bend the tonal center to F, even though you're playing in the key of C, kind of forcing the chord progression to go to F when normally C would be 1, that gives kind of a lydian sound.

Alway perplexing to hear guitarist stating a ''favorite key'', there is no difference between A major or B major or any major key , nor a minor or b minor keys etc. the ''intervals'' between notes, which is the heart and soul, and ''key '' to understanding western music are the same. A's B's and F sharps do not ''exist'' in the world, intervals do.They usually mean its just easier to play/finger.There are however substantial differences in sonic states conjured between major vs minor key progressions, which are sociocultural constructs, epigenic to music theory. So with all that rambling introspection out of the way , thank you, both, for these uploads and sharing you're love of this mysterious realm.
@seandaniel23
@seandaniel23 7 лет назад
Oh ho ho! Excellent point! But for a guitar in standard tuning, the key of A offers a lot really beautiful chord voicings you can make with the help of the open strings combined with higher voicings. So that's why it will always be my favorite!
