How beautiful you are, inside and out. There seems to be an increase in RU-vid channels demonstrating clean and simple living, making home and family the focus of their energy. It gives me hope that your collective influence will counter the obsession with makeup and immodest clothing that has proliferated for so long. It is remarkable that there are more and more young people drawn to your way of life. Keep up the good work. It is refreshing to observe.

When sewing on the band style...divided you band in 4th's, then, divide the skirt into 4ths, put pins in those 4th spot, then when stretching and sewing the elastic will match to the pins, Each section will be evenly distributed. You're only stretching a 4th at a time...super easy.

I have a sewing machine like yours and have restyled many skirts using elastic and drawstring. I did make a reversible skirt using French seams. It was so easy I laughed at my silliness thinking it would be complicated (which is something I do very badly). Thank you for inspiring me to start making things again. God bless you and your family.

You did a great job! The skirts look so good on you. I grew up Mennonite, however, I started attending a Methodist Church as an adult. One very good thing never left me and that's to dress modestly. This is a very good thing. I love your channel and you!

No matter where you go to church, dressing modestly is a plus ! AND, women who think they need to Show Everything for a man to take a second look are so Painfully lost ! They sadly don't have an appreciation of their true value and beauty !

I am a visual learner so this video was great for me. I believe I can now go to the thrift store, purchase a dress, and turn it into a skirt. Thank you for sharing how you make skirts. Sending you virtual hugs. My sister-in-law grew up in the Philippians where she learned to sew. She was taught to sew without using a pattern. So when she came to America she would go into the fabric store and ask for their old pattern books in order to make clothes. She is very talented. One time she took a dress with sleeves and made it into a sundress. I am envious of her. I need a pattern in order to make clothes.

I think what you are doing here is brilliant. What a great way for beginner sewers to practice. Buy thrift shop finds on the cheap and refashion them. If it doesn't work out you aren't out a lot of money and you are learning from your mistakes. Patterns, material and notions can add up. Love your style, the long knit skirts and t-shirts look pulled together but comfy.

I have been sewing since I was 11 yrs old, am 65 now. I used to take a part my mother's long pleated wool skirts that she had from high school and made new skirts for me when I was in high school. I sew almost all of my own clothes again since I retired. I have the same serger as you and love it for making all my knit tops. Love your sewing videos.

I love this! I'm at the moment working on sewing my first skirt from a larger skirt I picked up from the Goodwill. The pattern is grey with small light pink flowers on stretchy material so I hope it turns out alright. I'm only five foot and it is so hard to find longer skirts that aren't taller than I am. This has given me some ideas so thank you so much for that!

@@LynetteYoder Yes, although I've done it with narrow elastic too. I just tack it down with some vertical stitches in several areas so that it doesn't twist in the casing.

Lynette, I loved this and you wear your clothes so well. I would have loved to have seen you make a reversible skirt of the polka dots and stripes. :) A french seam on one side would have done that or make/cut the skirt in two sections rather than on the fold and french seam both sides......so cute and two skirts! :) You do a fabulous job with all of this and anyone who sews a bit can easily repeat as you do very well sharing what you are doing. This is something that made me giggle, I have the exact serger and sewing machine models as you do. LOL I had to giggle on that one. What a coincidence. Love how you adjusted your friends sweat shirt. I am thinking she washed it in hot water and dried it in the dryer to shrink it as much as possible and then had you adjust it. We have a screen printing business and the unisex are cut larger but it would surely work unless you order a womens which always run cut a bit smaller. I prefer the unisex for adjusting as I think the womens cuts are not for everyone as they can tend to be much more tapered for the female shape and I for one need a bit of more leeway in my arms and mid section. ;) :) Good luck and I am so enjoying your videos........I love sewing and love assisting as I can. Loving that I found you through Megan's referral! You really save a lot of money with your talents and that is to be so proud of. Love your choices of clothing as well. Very becoming to you. Blessings and enjoy your upcoming weekend!

Forgot to mention that I do sew. My mom was self taught and sewed really good. I learn from her on the sewing machine and on my own time I sewed by hand. The first time I ever sewed by hand was with a strand of white yarn and sharp tweezers. I made an draw string purse. I never use actual patterns. I’ll either use just a t-shirt I live or make custom patterns.

I was also shown how to sew from a very very young age. I can also knit too. I’m so glad for the gifts I was given in this area. I can use patterns but I often like to just make up my designs in my head I don’t know how to explain it. I’m from Australia so we are at the end of summer. I’ve been looking for some good quality flannel sheets for my son for winter. You inspired me to maybe just make my own. I liked the look of the zipper sheets you put on your boys beds. I’ve never seen that idea before. Is it possible to get some photos when you next take the sheets off the beds to show me how it’s made? Only if you have time.

Hey Lynette! Been watching your channel now for a year or so. Thanks for sharing how to fix skirts like that. Respect how you emphasize modesty. I'm not Mennonite. But I was wondering why the ladies have a strict dress code but the guys don't? Just wondering. Seems to me the guys should be modest too. Notice some of the guys wear shorts and tanks. Is this just a personal choice or is this common? Love watching you and the boys. They're so cute. God Bless!
@LynetteYoder
@LynetteYoder 5 лет назад
chloe Masonn where we came from in Ohio we had a stricter dress code for the guys. It just depends on the church really. There’s also a bit of a difference in the issue of being covered properly as a woman compared to a man. But I may open a can of worms there. 😉 not trying to argue. It’s important to try to understand what the Bible has to say about it because people will all have different opinions on things.

I’m a beginner at sewing but I think I will try what you did with that striped dress. My daughter is 4 but I I put her in size 10/12 dresses for length. I’ve only been tightening the neckline and adding waist ties to get her dresses to fit a bit better (and the way I tighten the neck is uncomfortable for her). But I’m looking into sewing machines and sewing in the sides and shoulder parts will do the trick.

I would love to glean second hand dresses and do this! Great content. Would you ever do a subject like how you keep your hair so neat ? Is it in a bun or what under your veil? I am so tired of having my hair cut and have a head start on growing it a bit right now before the hot summer gets here. I used to wear buns yrs ago but since have joined the shorter styles for comfort. But I don't like having rely on a hair stylist. Thanks a bunch!
@LynetteYoder
@LynetteYoder 5 лет назад
I don’t think I will - just Because it’s something I prefer to keep private. But the basic idea is - a ponytail in the back - wrap the hair around .. secure with a straight hairpin then wrap a hairnet around it to secure it. Then I’d out hairpins all around it. I also used to use two side Barrettes to hold the hair in better and possibly hook a hairpin to. Or you can do a twist style bun. No hair net. Hair is twisted before wrapping it around the ponytail and then secure with hair pins.

I use my mom's 1970's army green, solid metal Kenmore. It has two stitches (straight and zig zag). It's all I use. I was wondering why you weren't using a zig zag stitch on the knits. I'd always heard to use zig zag on stretch fabric.

Yes I’ve done that myself. I forgot. I’m used to sewing knits and I guess I’m not in the habit. But I think I had mentioned that on previous videos. ☺️

I like the way you reimagine or repurpose the dresses into skirts. I was just wondering, since you will no longer be wearing cape dresses will you at some point consider wearing pants?

Chery Treder no I won’t. ☺️

Unfortunately, Kenmore as a sewing machine brand is no more 😢 I'm guessing that Sears discontinued the brand for sewing machines about five years ago. For quite a few years before the brand was discontinued, they were actually manufactured by Janome.

I found an old Kenmore at goodwill for 12 bucks. Works as good as my 1,000 dollars husqvarna.

I would guess that it is not the custom in the congregation they are attending in Florida. There are differences in the custom from one congregation to another.

I was thinking the basic...climate change and cape dresses are more material equals getting hot faster. but Karen also makes a good point.

@@mimir3070 I grew up in Florida, and that occurred to me, too. I still can't stand hot weather, and I frankly underdress when I'm hot; I don't do it with any sense of vanity at all, and I hope I'm not distressing anyone, but I get sick if I overheat, and even wearing sneakers instead of sandals is sometimes too much. Lynette's ability to dress with decorum is admirable.

Thanks for the tips. Would you mind sharing the brand of the burgundy pattern skirt?

I’m not sure off hand. It was thrifted and isn’t a common brand.

Yay just in time for my lunch break!!! Hooray! Also, any reason you aren't wearing your Cape dresses as often as you said?

Just a choice at this this point. We aren’t attending the same type of church so it’s based more by each family’s convictions etc.

@@LynetteYoder thank you for the response! I went to a Baptist church in NY where it was frowned upon for women to wear pants and when I moved to Illinois and when to a non denominational church, it wasn't mandatory for women to only wear skirts or dresses, they could wear pants too...as long as nothing was revealing and everything was modest, it was ok. So I know exactly where you're coming from 😀
