We greased all the ropes
We'll throw you a line
We're gonna break these boulders
We're gonna pull things out
We greased all the ropes
We'll throw you a line
We're gonna break these boulders
We're gonna travel time

If I were banished to a desert island and told I could have the entire discography of one band to listen to forever, it would be Modest Mouse. Their whole discography runs the gamut of human emotions. I've laughed, I've cried, I've felt strong and weak. I love it. Greatest band I know. Come back to Red Rocks! Denver misses you!

I love the Chorus of this song, it sounds like the entire band is going one way, but then Issac's voice goes a completely different way, like it's pulling in the opposite direction. I don't know if it was intentional or not but it makes for a very exciting dynamic.
@J.D.Hardesty

I agree, it's dope the way it flows together, it reminds me of a Red Hot Chili Peppers song -21st Century, it has that same effect.

The tempo of the music like the tempo of nature pulls the soul in different directions. Still the opposite vocals and musical score can make something beautiful, too.

Yes, that's a great description. I'm not great at understanding lyrics, so I thought Isaac's lyrics had something to do with what the band was singing "We greased all the ropes/ Come bubbling outwards We'll throw you a line/And then "sit" back. Like they are speaking for Time and mocking how weak humans are compared to Time. That would have been a cool concept but the song is great as it is.

My Grandmother died the year this song came out, and I loved her dearly. She was a parent to me. One of our favorite things to do together was to rake up leaves together in her large yard come autumn. The line about the "trees turning colors now" always reminds me of those days in the fall where we worked together, gathering up leaves colored red and gold. I still miss those days, and this song if only for a few moments take me back in time to before she passed. This song is painful to listen to, but I love it all the same.

"Our predecessor left this box, and something's clawing around. I think it really wants out." This is such a deeply human line. I feel like it's about the things our ancestors did "for us", that horrify us and threaten to destroy us... But we simply can not ignore forever. Or maybe I'm just thinking too hard, and it's just about the faults we inherit from our parents.

Open up a window All the air, all the air is falling out Eyes vacuum up light Sound gets trapped by the mouth What to do with the remainder When the dents, the dents get hammered out Then we'll travel through time The world's an inventor With its work crawling, running, squirming 'round Trees drop colorful fruits Directly into our mouths The world's an inventor We're the dirtiest thing it's thought about And we really don't mind We'll probably never get there Bring your sightseers, schoolteachers down It's a watercolor weekend All the trees are turning colors now We'll probably never get there Bring your candy taster time wasters around And we'll fuck with their minds The world composes With his shirttails wrinkled, hanging out Bang us together See what sort of sounds we make right now The world plays music Playing skin on teeth inside of the mouth What sort of sounds? What lovely sounds come about? We greased all the roads We're floating in the light We're gonna break these borders We're gonna move in time We greased all the roads We're floating in the light We're gonna break these borders We're gonna travel time We're gonna throw a party All the ghosts of trees are coming out Don't move in any direction Wait until the light's inside of the cloud You're gonna wanna see this Don't bring your camera around Watch sun and sawdust align We greased all the roads We're floating in the light We're gonna break these borders We're gonna pulse in time We greased all the roads We're floating in the light We're gonna break these borders We're gonna travel time Hold up a window All the air, all the air is falling out Eyes vacuum up light Sound gets trapped by the mouth Our predecessor left this box And something's clawing around I think it really wants out ([?])

It's disheartening when people want the same album over and over again. "This doesn't sound like their third or fourth album and that's my favorite one" --stop you're doing it wrong. Each new album should be a step forward for the band, they worked hard and have completed something that IS Modest Mouse. If you don't like it, fine, but don't expect bands to put out the same shit year after year. Let bands create! Give it a chance - then give it a second chance!

The impression I get is that the songs on Strangers (including the ones that haven't been officially released but were played live before) kind of bridge the gap between Moon&Antarctica and Good News. There's an obvious pop sensibility to everything, but the variety is much larger and more impressive, and certainly more daring, than what was on the last two albums. There's also an overarching melancholy to all the tracks- not uncommon from MM, but it's hard to say Good News wasn't their "happiest" album, and this feels like a much more angry, bitter Good News. I'm not knocking that. I want that.

StyxTBuferd I would say the "poppiest" album was Good News, but We Were Dead was pretty daring also I feel like. In fact, I think every Modest Mouse album is Daring in it's own way, but I do see what you are saying as far as it's more along the lines of some of their older stuff. As far as it just being angrier, I wouldn't say that. I usually just tell people that music by Modest Mouse is emotional in general. Another thing I always tell people when telling them about Modest Mouse is that Modest Mouse has a song for any kind of emotion, and everywhere in between. That's the greatest thing about them. Same with their albums and how they all have very distinctive feels. The idea I got from this album is futility of peoples lives, pertaining mostly to suburbia, which is alluded by the cover of the overly structured neighborhood. I wouldn't call this "bitter Good News", but hey, I can see how you got that impression.

I realized recently that Issac lives less than 10 minutes from me and have passed his place in Portland many times and didn't know. He has put the house up for sale but would routinely leave his front door open. People would wander in an just say hello or strike up a conversation with him. A reporter realized this when she went to interview him. She said he barely looked up from whatever he was reading and after a few minutes exclaimed "oh, I have an interview today".. he did say he's chased 3 people out with an axe and did become tired of the neighborhood. Still, it's pretty cool how chill he was in the neighborhood.

I like it, seems a tad overproduced though like some of the stuff off of "We Were Dead...", but they never fail to impress me. I can't wait for March 17!!!

They'll never sound as under produced as they did before Good News. But even though this track is dense, I love the layers. There's so much going on, I hear something new with every listen. Perhaps it's overproduced, but what really matters is that it's *well* produced.

I hate people that feel the need to have a "super secret club". Modest Mouse has gotten so much better from their first CD's and you will never hear raw angst like you did before, which is 100% fine. The band is growing, not stagnating.

for some reason I was really upset when I first heard this album, I just expected something more. But modest mouse is modest mouse, I started listening to them when I was 13 and now I'm 21. This is the first album that has come out since I was a kid, and I guess I expected an evolution of the band or something, but I've listened to the same albums over and over again through my formative years and I realize that the albums weren't all that different-I love some songs, I go back and find new songs I hated before, the songs I liked before I don't like as much now, but it's still all modest mouse, and modest mouse is an entity that exists in itself, and this album is another great addition to their collective work. now kids in 2015 learning to love this band have six instead of five albums to listen to over and over again, and I'm still happy I had five

SICK song...resonates of old school, but still has the modern modest sound too. Sounds like they took riffs from the days of Long Drive and added a modern funk, I love it.... I pre ordered the vinyl; I can't wait to get it! Rock On!

I think this one and The Best Room will be great in concert because they'll jam out the last 4 minutes or so of the song. They can pretty much do this with most of their stuff--the best example "The World at Large."

I don't consider myself the biggest Modest Mouse fan. I like them, just wouldn't say I love them. However, I've listened to this song at least ten times today, so I am at least infatuated. God, the groove.... In this song I taste elements of so many classifications of rock and pop, and that up-and-down rolling bass makes me thing of first wave ska, but with a healthy post-punk sprinkling. This song lacks nothing. True artistry.

This is probably my favorite out of the tracks they've released from the new album so far. One thing that is getting to me though ... does anyone else think the mix sounds too "centered"? Maybe I'm just tired, or maybe I've been listening to too much electronic music lately, but it just seems kind of flat listening in headphones. I mean, even "Dashboard" to me sounds a lot brighter and more lively. Oh well, still love it. I just wish there were more movement and spread in the sounds.

I think the same as you. I listened with headphones too and it does feel a little bit flat, like lacking some kind of "punch" to it, maybe? Still, an incredible song!

Okay, this is freaking dope. I'm a long time MM fan, and I've wanted like crazy for this new album to be good, so I've been looking for reasons to like "Lampshades On Fire" and "Coyotes," etc. But I don't have to look on this track! This is just straight up excellent, well-written, jam-able musical sexiness. SO WORTH the 8 year wait!

I can't get enough of this song. So damn catchy. I feel like this song is about evolution and I love how it's portrayed as this sort of sloppy creator with his 'shirttails wrinkled, hanging out'. "The world's an inventor with its work Crawling, running, squirming 'round Trees drop colorful fruits Directly into our mouths The world's an inventor We're the dirtiest thing it's thought about And we really don't mind" "The world composes With his shirttails wrinkled, hanging out Bang us together See what sort of sounds we make right now The world plays music Playing skin on teeth inside of the mouth What sort of sounds What lovely sounds come about"
