Modi’s speech takes us back to India’s most dangerous decade - the many challenges of 1960s 

I am 70 now. I can faintly remember events ,may be , before 1964 or so, but more clearly after that. One incident,which etched in my mind is from 1965 Indo-Pak because Indian Air Force shot down a Pakistani fighter jet in Kharagpur, West Bengal and the pilot's name was faintly remembered Afzal Khan. His body fell on a tree and many among my friends went to the sight. I was growing up in Bengal in 60s and 70s decades upto 1978 ,which were the most disturbing period ,Bengal went through and Left front rule end just one year before my retirement after 34 years of governance or lack of it and West Bengal has not recovered from 1967 to-date. Mamata outsmarted the left in their game. Mamata is ,in fact, a classic model of a red commissar in a Professed Gandhian white khadi robe. Today, actually, my memory was refreshed by Gupta Ji. Looking back on the period,we wonder how could we survive and protect our sovereignity, partucularly given the size,when whole lot of countries were balkanized?. The credit must be given to those who were in power at those critical junction irrespective of party affiliations, because parties and leaders would eventually pass. Their memories would fade with the passage of time, however big they may appear in their life time.

Indians actually living in one of the most peaceful time after independence.. Modi brought peace in India.. Opposition don't have other points to raise so they highlighting such issues of Manipur..If you check such issues then those were even happened in state like Maharashtra.

10:33 the right most person is my late grandfather Shri Jitesh Chandra Chowdhury. Thank you Shekhar Sir for sharing this real life story. The IAF crew was treated very badly by the Naga rebels. My grandfather had lifelong injuries from this unfortunate incident.

Modi may not be liked by everyone in India, especially the anti-national opposition gang, but Modi is a man of vision and a nationalist to the core. Under Narendra Modi's golden rule India will surely reach super power status militarily and economically.

We Mizo do remember the dark times but we dont carry a victim mindset but rather we have forgave and upheld peace...mizoram accord being the most successful agreement in India's independent history is a testement in itself. However any politician using this event in history for their own gains heavily undermines our sentiments. You wanna address it then do it sincerely. For Mizo its not Congress or Bjp but rather GOI Govt of India, thats our perspective.

As an old person, I still remember the 1960's while growing up in East Patel Nagar, new Delhi. During the Chinese excursion in 1962, I remember my uncles with others patrolling the streets at night! India was caught with its pants down, and the defence budget had been robbed. Corruption was rife and the defence forces did not even have warm clothes. The National Defence Fund was initiated. Too much history to add here!

😮 Those days there were no 24 hour news channels but magazines like Indiatoday ,Outlook, Frontline, Sunday used to be full of horrible situation that existed. At one point of time I got so scared of reading details about killings etc that I stopped buying and reading.

Thank you for such a detailed description of those troubled times. The relative prosperity that we are enjoying today is due to the leaders of those times who navigated the country through all the economic hardships, food insecurities, domestic and international political instabilities and two-front wars. Nobody is perfect, so many mistakes were made in the process. However, the Union of India and its democracy remained intact for us to enjoy today. People criticizing the older leaders today should never forget that.

The most prosperous period is under Modiji. It seems when other parties in power, only China, Pak etc benefited more than India.

I read most of the comments. They refrain from taking the name of Smt. Indira Gandhi. Who handled the crisis from mid sixties through to mid seventies. She was the person at helm. She handled it well. She must be appreciated.

Leadership qualities make a huge difference. Nehru was seen as soft by India's enemies as he on many occasions was slow to take an agressive posture to show some spine. Today under Modi ji, enemies understand that India is quick to return any attacks with twice the force...whether it be militarily or diplomatically. Hence China (our main threat) only resorts to skirmishes on the border.

Modi's ruling decade 2014-2024 is the most dangerous decade. Enough of teaching the history we already knew. Speak about the current issue. We know how Manmohan Singh has tackled Indian economy in 1990s. Globalization is what India is now.

I agree that the 1960s was the worst decade post independent India faced for all the reasons enumerated by you. The 1970s was pretty bad and 1980s brought its own set of crises but by then, as they say the worst was behind.

I do not see the connection between the 1966 IAF bombing Aizawl and the plight of our brothers in Manipur now. Is Modi saying that the BJP's behaviour upon the Zos in Manipur is lesser in degree compared to the Congress's action upon the Zos of Mizoram in 1966? Isn't this politisizing the Manipur crisis?

In one of your earlier videos you explained the context of the 1966 air bombing of Mizoram in greater detail. Apparently it was an all-out war by the rebels for sovereignty and Army installations wereunder seige. Air attack option was employed to establish control.

Once the country becomes strong and prosperous, interestingly enough you will find more and more people become patriotic and willing to fight for the new nation. After 75+ years, there is no external force that can destabilize a stable, economically growing India except self-induced policies which can alienate the minority population leading to internal dissension.
