When I heard NASA's DC8 was flying all month long at Paine Field; I knew I had to make my way there... This is my 2nd time catching a DC-8!
Throughout the month of October, Boeing and NASA has embarked on a new emissions testing project; Boeing is flying their new 737 MAX 10 using both conventional and sustainable fuels, while NASA's DC-8 follows the 737 to measure the emission of different fuel types and formation of contrail ice particles. The 737 MAX will be delivered to United but right now the aircraft is part of Boeing's ecoDemonstrator "explorer" aircraft.
NASA's DC-8 is their airborne science laboratory; the aircraft is used to collect data from various experiments to support the world's scientific community. The aircraft is also used as a more inexpensive way to test satellite equipment and other prototypes.
The DC-8 is also used for space vehicle launches and re-entry telemetry and tracking.
Once a very common aircraft in the skies, the DC-8 has become a very rare sight. There are currently only 8 DC-8's currently active in the world
This DC-8 started its life with Alitalia in 1969, it then joined Braniff International Airways and Quiet Nacelle Corporation. In 1986, it finally joined NASA where it has been ever since. Sadly the aircraft will be retired in the very near future and replaced by a Boeing 777.
