Modified NRA Basic Pistol Instructor qual, for real student expectations

I like the NRA Basic Pistol Instructor qualification test however, it isn't very realistic to let you shoot your gun, your way when students will need you to help them learn to shoot their pistol their way. What do I mean? At the beginning of our instructor development course we shoot a modified version of the NRA Instructor standard test. Each student must shoot the other instructor's guns in the following sequence.
1. two-handed strong side. 5 rounds
2. two-handed non-dominant side. 5 rounds
3. one handed right. 5 rounds
4. One-handed left. 5rounds
45ft, 6" group, 9" target.
Typically most Basic Pistol Instructor Candidates have not given this a lot of thought. Many naturally practice and assume that everyone is right-handed and have never practiced for civilians who only have the use of one hand or the other. Many have never shot a revolver or other firearm that may be in the class. This is used at the beginning of class to set the expectations. I want every new instructor to go home and practice so they are prepared to shoot any student's gun as proficiently as their own and to be able to demonstrate and teach any student with any disability, how to be proficient. Of course, once they have finished, I shoot the same exercise to demonstrate they should never ask their students to do anything they are not capable of performing themselves.
It's a lot of fun and I typically have everyone's attention the remainder of class.

I've been through two police academies and SWAT school. I can say this is one the most unique qual courses/instructor I've seen.

Thank you. This is for NRA "basic" pistol. Load, point, shoot, civilian. But I think someone who wants to take on even this simple challenge, should be expected to perform using the same as his/her students with their firearm. Because I have had so many uniquely challenging students sign up for an intro class, it took me a while to learn what was truly necessary and expected.

I don’t know what I like most about this instructor, the mind for diversity, or the general bad-ass confidence!

Thanks. Just because you teach basic pistol, doesn't mean your knowledge should be basic. The drill drives home the point to continue your training even for simple tasks.

These are things we're looking for to see if it's their first attempt or do they have experience. Gives us an opportunity to explain why they should start working on it now before they face the questions from students.

Thanks for sharing this video. It is a good idea to use drills like these prior to the instructor candidates firing the actual qualification. You must find that it warms them up and gets them more relaxed. We have had many instructor candidates when shooting the NRA Pistol Instructor prequal with us, use a mixed hybrid of defensive rhythm and traditional target and some struggle. We developed successful solutions to that, still it is nice to see your ideas, and some may come in handy

Think I'll save this, getting ready to do the Instructor course. This is the real world test though.

That chick in purple had her gun on the table and was messing around with something on the table. Poor form, it looked like she swept herself, putting her hand in front of the barrel

She was safe the whole class but actually had to put in more work than anyone else. Overall she did well enough to pass. This one drill before class begins demonstrates everyone's abilities right out of the gate. Lets me know who has the most experience and who needs the most work. It also sets the bar higher than any were expecting from the Basic NRA Pistol Instructor course.

Can I ask why you would shoot non-dominant two handed?
@dynamiccombativesolutionsl5358
@dynamiccombativesolutionsl5358 3 года назад
What if you get punched in your dominate eye? Two hands are better than one. These are Instructors testing to teach students. I am asking them to duplicate shooting they may encounter from a student. So that they can demonstrate proficiency duplicating how a student shoots. If I am teaching a left handed, left eye dominant person. I need to be able to demonstrate how I want them to shoot and I need to be able to do it well. Instructors are not graded on this, but it shows their strengths and weeknesses with training others.

@@dynamiccombativesolutionsl5358 ok, roger. Wasnt trying to troll or anything. Just wanted some clarification on the possible scenario in which that type of shooting would be relevant. Thanks for that

@@dynamiccombativesolutionsl5358 Genuinely curious, Is the NRA still teaching dominate eye shooting rather then both eyes open? Also what's the target distance?
@dynamiccombativesolutionsl5358
@dynamiccombativesolutionsl5358 3 года назад
@@Maggie-rh8yp Basic Pistol has always been about basic Marksmanship. Accuracy is about sight picture and trigger press, everything else is relative. I don't pretend to speak for the NRA, but I was never told I had to teach a specific method. If the student achieved the goals while being safe then it is NRA approved. I teach, both eyes open. Target distance is relative to the size. They use a 9" target. We shoot from 45' so it has to be in a 6" group. If we're out at 30' then it has to be a 4" group and so on. I know many instructors are particular about "their" method of doing things, but they need to be careful not to have that confused for making it an "NRA" doctrine when teaching students. Technically speaking, you could shoot left handed upside down and still pass NRA basic pistol, provided you did it safely and effectively. Hope that helps.

Is weaver or modified weaver stance permitted?
@dynamiccombativesolutionsl5358
@dynamiccombativesolutionsl5358 2 года назад
Stance is irrelevant. Just needs to be comfortable and solid. The NRA doesn't prescribe to any type of grip or stance.

@dynamiccombativesolutionsl5358 3 года назад
These are instructors being evaluated. Not every student is right handed not every student has the use of both hands. They're being tested on their proficiency to shoot the same as the students they'll be hired to teach someday. Which means being proficient with any gun and being able to replicate what they ask of their students.

I had a student with severe arthritis in her non dominate hand, another with MS. Both hated the "Gun Store" class they attended. I worked with them, adapted my class to their physical needs and found guns that worked for them.
