This is great stuff. Usually the hardest part of facing the zone for youth players is that the ball stalls and or the offense becomes passive, way passive. I love the instantaneous ability to at least run something cohesive quickly, really setting the zone back on its heels. Thanks a lot from an excited girls youth coach!

Hi Coach, I've got another team to use the modified triangle again this year. 4th graders. I seem to remember you recommend teams start with the triangle spread cut before the X cut. Especially if they are younger and less experienced. My 4th graders are above average in footwork, skills, and IQ. Would you start them in spread or X cuts?

Troy- My apologies for a very, very late response to your question!! If you think your 4th graders can handle it, run both. What we found was that so many teams ran zones in the early grades, so we ran spread cuts. Against M2M defense, we like the X cuts. Once we determine what our opponent is doing defensively, we tell the players which of the two cut options they shold use.

We run your Triangle offense a lot. Do you run this type of offense vs. 1-3-1 also?

We do run the Triangle Offense against all defenses, man or zone. I do a have a very SIMPLE and HIGHLY EFFECTIVE offense used exclusively against the 1-3-1 defense. Every time we used it, we drove the opponent out of their 1-3-1 defense. Ryan- It is still a triangle set. I call it "Modified" because we don't use all the movement found in our "Triangle Zone Offense" video. This version is much simpler; thus, easier to learn.

my kids are 11-14 yr old boys, and can NOT do this play. They are so lazy! and of course they all think they are the best. So frustrating.

Lisa- I can see how this could be frustrating for you. There are some You Tube videos out there that show the Chicago Bulls (and Michael Jordan) as well as the Los Angeles Lakers (and Kobe Bryant) running a version of the Triangle Offense. Maybe you could show your players the video clips of the best players in the world running the Triangle. If is good enough for these Hall of Fame players, it sure as heck is good enough for 11-14 year old boys! Good luck!
