I want to share basketball ideas gained from a 47 year coaching career. I have coached at every level from high school, junior college, NAIA, NCAA Division II, and NCAA Division I...39 years as a head men's coach and, in retirement, the last 6 years as skill development coach for a college women's program which won the 2015 NJCAA Div. II National Championship. I am fortunate to have been selected as a two-time Hall of Fame coach with a career won-loss mark of 503-285. Our teams have won 15 conference championships. I have lots of information that I wish to pass on to the next generation of coaches. So keep checking back as this RU-vid journey begins!
Yes it does appear different at times. As I mention in my preliminary statement in the video, I took over the coaching of this team after the coach was let go late in the season; there were just a few weeks left. So not a lot of practice time for a new offensive scheme. As I mention, I thought the players did a pretty good job all things considered and, yes, they got "off script" at times because the offense was new to them. What was pleasing to me was that they went from a team that had won 3 of the previous 50 games to winning 3 of their last 6 games which included a win over the conference champion.
So many basketball tv, shooting science, shot breakdown videos floating around youtube and this one is still one of the best vids. I wished I saw this at the start of my basketball life.
I really like how Coach Schakel breaks down these offenses! My JV team is working on this so we can get our first W this season! I'm putting all my cards on this offense! 7:23 12:18 12:45 16:00 17:30 27:35
Coach- Go to "Doug Schakel Basketball - RU-vid" to see all 5 videos on the "Modified Triangle Offense." There are 28 videos in all covering different BB topics including 9 on shooting. Best- Doug Schakel
You are right, we used this against both zone and man defense. Go to "Doug Schakel Basketball RU-vid" and you will see all 4 videos of the Triangle Offense as well as 24 other videos.
we run this but we dive the 5 to the short corner which usually drags the 5 down and opens up a midpost flash from the opposite post before popping to reverse the ball
Doug it is nice seeing you again. May i remind you. You took me thro coaching course in 1986 while you were the head coach at Mesa college in Colorado then you seconded us to Arizona State University under coach Rob Chavez. Am still coaching. I would be grateful if we start and continue with our coaching relationship once again. Kindly give me your contacts and Rob's contacts. Be blessed. Am Coach Peter Otieno Ochara from Kenya.
Michael Jordan may have taken 6 NBA Championships without the Triangle, but "The beauty of the Triangle O is that it can feature the greatest player, without being reliant on the greatest player." MJ didn't have to work hard for each basket AND there' ALWAYS a counter to any defensive manipulation. Thank Coach for simplifying it !!!
We do run the Triangle Offense against all defenses, man or zone. I do a have a very SIMPLE and HIGHLY EFFECTIVE offense used exclusively against the 1-3-1 defense. Every time we used it, we drove the opponent out of their 1-3-1 defense. I can't believe a Hall of Fame coach is giving out free shooting lessons on RU-vid. More High School coaches need to use these videos as a reference to teach their kids

We do customize the improvement plans for each player. It is not a "one size fits all" approach because each player has specific needs that should be addressed. Sorry, I don't have a sample plan but there is noting fancy about it. We identify the skill(s) that a player needs to improve on and suggest simple drills that will help them improve. In-season, if they have more than one skill deficiency, we usually have them first work on the one skill that we deem to need the most improvement. In the off-season, they can work on more than one skill deficiency in the self-improvement workouts. Let me know if you have any other questions. You can call me at 913-938-8130 if you like. Best- Doug Schakel
I think the problem with changing the angles at different ranges is the repeatability of it. When i interviewed Dave Hopla he said Curry shoots 45.1 on every shot (i think that was the exact number) all though it may not be optimal according to physics. physics is not accounting for the human element of repeatability.
Hey Doug. I love this defense and think this could work for my team. I coach a JH and Varsity team. It is a low level Christian school league with not very good ball handlers. I think this could definitely work with my JH girls but I'm not sure about the Varisty. Could you check and see if we you think it would work. If you get back with me I can send you a link to a video of our games. We struggle scoring and I think this could be just the thing we need.
