Modifying A $635 Cymbal - MOD Cymbals

I do a lot of modifications where the goal is to get rid of weird tones/hums. Many times those frequencies that overpower and make a cymbal unplayable without tape can be taken care of with our “light” modification. Check this out with headphones and let me know what you think!

One of the best "atonal" ride cymbals I've ever heard is in the "Family Guy" TV series (first 7 seasons). Their drummer used ride cymbal that just floats perfectly on top of every bit of music they recorded. Go have a listen to the bumpers from those early episodes. Pure butter.

I'll do that! Thanks Lance!

Any idea what cymbal that is?

Agreed! That’s Peter Erskine I believe, playing those beautiful little vignettes… but if you listen to the actual theme tune, it sounds like VDrums or some kinda programmed thing…😩

Wow. Very nice upgrade to it. Much much nicer. I love the wash you brought out of it, that crashability is needed. I really need to do this to my polyphonic meinl 21. It's heavy, it's bell is dead. It's a strange cymbal in its "polyphonic " glory but I wish it was a little bit more washy and lighter at the edge.

Aargh... now I'm checking new ride cymbal candidates for those humming frequencies, painstakingly circling around the bell with a stick. I must look funny😉 But yeah, hum is bad, and especially when playing at low volume acoustic music or playing with mallets. No matter how well the sustain/dryness or overall tone hits the ballpark. Some cymbal types, f.ex chinas might benefit from weird humming notes (I love the s$&$%y and crappy contradictory of my large Wuhans) but the rides better not be humming birds, or they are going to be leaning on the wall forever

Hey, I aquired a Pieste Sound Creation 20" med ride, one of the early to mid 80's version. Beautiful looking cymbal. Nice bell sound but the stick click sounds unappealing. Crashes ok but the ride sound isn't happening. Is there a way to layth it to give a more pleasing ride sound or should I have it lathed to the poin that it's a dark crash cymbal? Thanks.
@ReverieDrumCo
@ReverieDrumCo Год назад

So i just got a wuhan 22 china its way to loud has this gong overtone i was wondering if drilling a few holes will take care of that and how can you lower the pitch of a cymbal grate vid btw
@ReverieDrumCo
@ReverieDrumCo Год назад
Holes would make the sound more aggressive and add a "white noise" color to the sustain. The way to lower the pitch would be to either loosen the tension or lathe weight off it.
@bobbyboygaming2157
@bobbyboygaming2157 Год назад
Would you ever modify Sabian B8s (cheap entry level stuff) or would that type of stuff be "unfixable" lol? Just wondering.
@ReverieDrumCo
@ReverieDrumCo Год назад
I typically don’t. B8 is a very different metal composition that only really sounds “Ok” when it’s made using very particular specs. The higher copper content makes for a dead, hollow, and mushy sound when it’s lathed thin and hand hammered. There are some guys that do a great job with it though!
@Pure_KodiakWILD_Power

Do you ever have people send you ludicrously cheap cymbals to make them sound better? 🤣
@ReverieDrumCo
@ReverieDrumCo Год назад
I don’t do too many super cheap cymbals. As long as it’s B20 material I’m good to mod it! B8, B10, and B15 alloy cymbals don’t usually turn out as well.

its actually crazy how much better the K cons sound imo while costing like 100 dollars less
@alanduncan1980
@alanduncan1980 Год назад
K Con? I would have left it alone. It didn't sound all that bad to begin with. It's probably brought the resale value down some too. I would reserve the cymbal modifications for some old Avedis sewer caps or something. I wouldn't touch a 650 dollar cymbal with a hammer or a lathe. Just sell it.
@ReverieDrumCo
@ReverieDrumCo Год назад
I modify K Cons and Sabian Artisans like this all the time. Just because they have the high price tag doesn't mean they sound the best they can. I'm also an independent cymbalsmith so it's very easy to catch where these large brands rush the process and put out work that could be better.
@alanduncan1980
@alanduncan1980 Год назад
@@ReverieDrumCo Well, reworking a Sabian Artisan is not always a bad idea. Have at it. A lot of the ones I've tried were clunkers. I think K Cons are decent cymbals though. Some might be a bit too heavy, but not everything has to be a jazz ride. If I owned a K Con that I wasn't mad about, I'd sell it and use the cash to get something else. The thing that I didn't understand was...why would someone pay all that much for a cymbal and then decide they don't like it? Even if they paid nothing for it and didn't like it. Sell it! It's going to cost money for the modification. I sold a used 20" K Con for 350. And it sold fast. I don't get it. If I had an old Avedis that could potentially sound good if I shaved some weight of it and hammered it, I'd send it to someone like yourself to do that for me, but a K Con? Nah. It is what it is. Just flip the thing and buy something else. Just my thinking on it.

@@alanduncan1980 you have a loser mindset. If something is wrong, the natural reaction should be how to fix it yourself. Especially if it involves a new skill that you are capable of learning. There are times when cut and run are needed, but that shouldn't be your default.
