After a few months of taking care of the mechanical issues with the Jeep, the fun part begins. Building a platform for camping.
NOTE: At the time line 2:33 what I'm referring to is the storage of the table.

This is one of the best budget builds for a XJ I have seen. That is very well thought out. Now I have a few ideas from you I need to think about! I really hope you end up liking it and get to enjoy time in it. If you don’t, it wasn’t for lack of trying or effort. From the sliding bed, to the flip up doors, to the drop down utensil shelf, it looks very functional. Very impressive. By the way, I saw you slid the driver’s seat up to sleep, can you also tilt the back rest forward a bit too? That would give you another couple of inches if it wasn’t already. As long as you have a good mattress, then I would think you could be comfortable. I sleep on my side too and it takes some thick padding to make it so your hip bone doesn’t hit the floor. Once I took care of that, sleeping was great in my Jeep. Thanks for the shout out. I appreciate it. I am glad you got some ideas to start with....and then you made them better! Great build. I look forward to seeing how it works out. EDIT: Since you have the skills, could you possibly extend the seat track a few inches somehow? If you end up to not like camping in the Jeep, my guess is it would be due to the bed length. There is a solution out there 👍

Thank you for watching the video and for the kind comment. Your adventures we're part of my motivation to do this build. Anyone who has spent 7 months travelling in an XJ is an expert at what works and what doesn't in my opinion. As far as the seats go, they are at the full forward position and at full forward tilt. I have heard that seats from a two door XJ tilt, which would help, but like I said, finding any XJ's in my area is near impossible. However, I think I have enough room. As for the bed, I have a thin self inflating back packers type mattress under the foam mattress and in a test they seem like a comfortable combination. An overnight is planned to test the bed and the kitchen galley system. I will be taking everything camping related I can fit in there and determine what works and what doesn't, following the experts suggestions. :)

wyattoneable Hopefully you video your test nights. Would be great to hear how it goes as you ate working through the bugs. I just showed my girlfriend your build. She gasped when she saw you drop down kitchen storage and had me rewind it so she could see it again. That was a genius use of space and organization 👍

Me too. Doris wants to meet Helga someday but as you know it's hard to get away from these animals. I'm headed Southwest to get onto highway 10 or 20 and head West to California to visit family and friends, then to Oregon to visit my dad. I have to be back before June 13th because were going to N.C. for a wedding. I'll be busy this summer.

Laying in the back of the Jeep made me feel like a kid again. Like many kids did back in our day, we use to make forts and sleep in them overnight. I till have some work to do before the road trip but nothing happens until this knee heals. It's proving to be a long process. Thanks for the view and for leaving a comment Dave.

Thats a great build wyattoneable. Well presented video and cut to the perfect length. I've always wanted to get into RVing and overlanding but for me the cost is inhibitive. Considering my age and how many times I can get out in a year, the cheaper the build the better. Keep up the good work!

I appreciate your comment. The build was not that expensive as I had most of the material on hand. Travelling is expensive however, especially gas. But the adventure is out there for you to explore. I hope you find way to get out there and see if the cost is worth the memories you will make.

That's very kind of you. I had fun working out the best solutions for this build. I can say now that I spent 17 nights in it during my last road trip everything worked as planned. Getting to my utensils from the drop down shelve was sometimes a pain because I had to move some things out of the way to gain access, otherwise the system was fun to use. I like you idea of painting the name "Options" on the side of the hood. I may try something. I appreciate your time here and come back anytime.

I know the video is 3 years old, but, I had a lot of fun watching it. Since I am on this kick watching camping builds lately, this fit right in, This one is definitely one of the more interesting that I have seen! Bonus footage was a plus, and I was thinking to myself, "hey just move the seat forward for more room" well you answered that thought as soon as it was there. HAHA! Great video!

I really appreciate the comment. I watched a lot of camper builds before putting my system together. RU-vid can be very helpful and fun to watch. Sadly, I had to sell that Jeep because it just wasn't big enough for daily use. Camping for me only happens a few times during the year so I got something better for daily use. But I sure had fun in that XJ and this has been one of my most watched videos.

Love the build. It’s absolutely genius! I’m thinking of buying an XJ. I’m 6’2, would I have to remove the passenger seat?
@wyattoneable
@wyattoneable 4 года назад
Thank you! Yes, take out the passenger seat. It's only four 13 mm bolts and it gives you so much more room. I had to keep my seat in for when I got to my dads house. Have a good mattress and keep the bed clear of becoming a storage area if at all possible. It's nice to be able to get into bed with all your stuff in the Jeep. That way everything is secure and out of the weather. Good luck with finding that perfect Jeep.

It was a great set up. It just so happens I have a video coming out that shows some major changes based on the passenger seat coming out. That gives us much more room to spread out a little so I had to change the bed to the other side and that affected where other things go. The good thing about this set up is we can change things around. Have fun building up rig and thanks for the comment.

I've seen so many XJ camper conversion videos, and so many people make a raised bed--- and I own a Cherokee, and I've camped in it--- and I could never sleep on a raised platform. If I can't sit up in my bed, it would be torture. I love the way you've done your mattress. Mine is on the passenger side, and I have to front seat removed aswell for even more room.

In this build I needed to keep the passenger seat for my dad. But now I am working on a modification to sleep on the passenger side like you have done. I would get one of those camping tables that roll up and go in a bag to take up less space. But with the table space you have and when you add the extra cover for the drawer you might not need it. Go down to one of those yellow tubs, and put your cooler on that permanent space for cooler. I to am an older woman, and not very limber, and have some weight on me, but it's nice to see someone close to my age attempting to do this. I'll be starting on my build very shortly. Working on measurements and hope I don't have to remove front passenger seat.
@wyattoneable
@wyattoneable 4 года назад
My table worked out great but thanks for the suggestion. Having a tub under a cooler that has a drain might be a good idea. I did a 20 night road trip and the worse part was the heat. Trying to sleep was difficult. Getting in and out of the little side door was a bit of a pain, but not terrible. I did a "lessons learned" video about that trip. Good luck on your build. I had a great experience with my Jeep.

wow so awesome, love this already. got the 42yo light and a battery as a counter weight, genius obviously. those crates are great and with the lid being a tray and the slingshot bungee system you have a nice storage above there for quick access stuff like winter jacket or blankets. man as i go through this video i like this setup more and more, the sliding bed/flip up foot area is awesome, you've sure thought about LOTS of stuff going into this! when i was sleeping in the rig the back door and rear door were both a pain to get in and out of, trying to take shoes off and get right into bed is super awkward, tiny opening with low ceilings, again, genius solution. gets to headliner section: "WHAT!" dang man, thoroughly impressed, hope it works out great for ya. never would be able to tell most of it is "scraps," looks totally legit.

I've been on the road now for a week and I can tell you it's not easy. Getting older brings along some limitations and this small space will remind you of them. My advice to you Wyatt is to test out your system to find it's weak points. Do it safely and in you own yard, not in the shop to test your system out, and if their is a failure point, like if its to cold, which makes you pee more so getting constantly out and back in of the jeep to go can be a pain. Or the bed is just to painful or uncomfortable, you can just walk back in to the house and rethink your design. The heating system, bed comfort, ease and access of use of items will be big issues once out on the road. May also want to invest in a nice heated blanket for those exta cold nights. I could go on but im sure you already know all of this already, so have fun with this project, I'll just be over here in the bleachers watching.

Thanks for the tips. I have a two night stay planned within walking distance of home for the reasons you have suggested. Not only to make sure the bed is comfortable but how to take care of business and shower when not in a camp site.

@@wyattoneable my rig is not a budget build, but may provide some ideas for your future projects. My 4 wheel drive Cherokee includes a full Kitchen on heavy duty slides which enables ARB Fridge & ClearView Pantry to pull completly out of the Jeep's cargo area, Roof-Top Tent (RTT), 10'pop-up screen room, and a pop-up bathroom/changing room. I can carry up to 7.8 Gallons of potable water (1 WaterPort & two 2 gallon plastic RotoPlex carriers). My Yeti Goal Zero 1250 power generator provides 3 days of electric before needing recharge. The Goal Zero power generator recharges either with AC or while the Jeep engine is running. The power generator can also be recharged with solar panels but my current energy needs don't necessitate additional alternative charging capabilities. My 15000 BTU portable stove can use either Butane or Propane for fuel. The campers' assets are totally modular which affords the flexibility to deploy optional resources as needed. If boondocking/primitive camping, I have my own water & electric power for up to 3 days. If staying in a campsite which provides water, electric, and showers/bathrooms, I can just use my RTT and kitchen. My pop-up screen room gives me a place of refuge from mosquitoes in under 2 minutes. BTW ... I always get a lot of interest and "thumbs up" comments from curious lookielou's who walk up and ask questions when the sunshade is deployed on the Jeep's rear hatch. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lGWL7Pp9igg.html&authuser=0

I won't be going that direction, those tents are expensive. I do want to get an awning however. Since being retired I too have been getting interested in the over landing videos. I won't be prepared to be travelling over rough trails or rock crawling, but with a stock 4x4 and dry weather a guy can still get off the beaten path and take some trails for that perfect camping spot. That's the plan anyway. This Jeep is stock, no locking diffs, no lift kit and small tires so I know my limitations. But I think I can still have fun.

@@wyattoneable LOL...I hear ya Wyatt, I won't be doing any Rock Crawling either 😉 I plan on keeping mine stock for the most part too but the Limited Slip Diff is already giving me some concerns about traction....and that's just getting in and out of my driveway during the inclement weather 😲

Very cool. I love it. Did I miss something, what were you using as your cooler stand? I used to just have a mattress and fishing and camping gear thrown in the bed of a small Nissan pickup truck with a camper shell that someone gave me. My brother and I had to sleep in it on the beach one time and it was quite comfortable as long as the night temperature was cool enough. If it was too warm, I had a couple of cots to sleep on, outside, but never did get mosquito netting, which would have been a plus. I would have loved to have a setup like yours.

When your young you can deal with a lot of uncomfortable situations. But as we get older we need a little more comfort. As long as I can get 6 hours of sleep I'm good to go.
