@@uncreativename9936 I guess it depends how deadly the issue is. If recruits aren't dying, you're not wasting your most valuable assets. Trucks are easily replaced.
I've drove few times of M35A2 during my military time in Taiwan (year 2002). First time was during driving training. Second time was driving down mountain base to fix our M35A2 and which doesn't have any brake (I only have 1st and 5th gear......), that almost killed me and my chief........ Third time was during military exercise....... I was throw into the door because I hit a big pothole and there were no power steering to help me...... I kind of miss how bad it was.....
Wouldn't have to worry about parking spots, you could just yank anything out of the way, and nothing will get into a school parking lot big enough to tow it away.
My uncle has one of these. It has the radio room back on it instead of the open bed, which he converted to a camper and restored the rest of it. Replaced the original engine with a brand new one. He also turbocharged it so it would no longer be out run by school buses. These can be bought for pretty cheap because the military loves to throw away perfectly good equipment in favor of new stuff.
This is pretty cool. For some reason (not a practical one) I want to restomod an old 70s Mack 5 ton flatdeck that is sitting in the back lot of an old employer's warehouse. It'll never move again unless somebody buys it from them or it heads to scrap. I like the idea of having my own body-job to haul a car around to shows.
This medium duty brake system isnt quite like semis in that they use fully air actuated wheel cylinders aka brake chambers, but no doubt you're going to see stuff like this as a diesel mechanic
@@Jodah175 and I plan to savor every moment leading up to them getting the rigging on to the frame and sending someone in through a broken cab window to shift the thing outta first with all diffs engaged. Knowing how the city and county of honolulu do things, it'll be good for at least four solid hours of entertainment
Actually the county park by where I live, a few years back. decided to take their own deuce-and-a-half out into the middle of the field after it had been raining for two weeks. that f***** sink so quick and was stuck in the mud for nearly a month before they could pull it out. 😂😂
Doug DeMuro would be like "THIS is a Military Issue Deuce and a Half....I'm going to go around it, show you it's quirks and features, then give it a Doug-score!"
"Im gonna walk you through all the quirks and features this monster has, and Then I'll be taking it out on the road to see how it performs (a single sweat drop rolls off his brow). Then I'll give it a doug score to see how it compares with other vehicles in its class."
Hydroboost like its name suggests uses the hydraulic power steering pump to help with the braking. However, while going slow around a turn, you will have to muscle the steering wheel a bit. The Chevy Astro/GMC Safari vans used hydroboost, mostly because a brake booster would not fit very well or at all.
Hearing you guys talk about car people not knowing about hydroboost brakes. 96 and newer Mustangs have hydroboost. I learned about that when swapping a 95 8.8 into my 88 Mustang.
How much fabrication is there for the brake pedal? What about a proportioning valve also how did you install that with the mil spec heater / defroster hoses in the way?
I have a 72 m35a2 what brake pedal assembly did you use. Mine has a mil spec heater and I'm not for sure i would have room for that system. Would you be willing to divulge a piping diagram for the brakes? What can I expect to spend on that conversion.
My grandpa is a handyman, and one time his truck broke down and it’s his only car, so he had to use his brother’s deuce and a half in its place for like a week.
I wonder how much it would cost to find a roller with a good frame and body or even just a good frame and body and just put all normal off the shelf heavy duty pick up and/or medium duty truck parts, a 12v conversion and something like a Cummins 4bt or 6bt engine.
commercial vehicles have an air compressor, air tank, and air brakes. they have what's called a "spring brake". in the event of a total failure of the air system, the spring brakes will stop the truck..... and your not going anywhere until air pressure is restored (repair leak first) most commercial trucks do NOT have hydraulic brakes
2600$ for hydro steering? F' that ill stick to armstrong steering, keeps those arms like popeye. also manual locking hubs kinda suck thyere good for mileage though. they do help in steering but in my opinion theyre not worth it.
Hmm, did i got something wrong about air-brakes..? Because i thought that you don´t brake with air, you release the brakes with air. The brakes itself are applied by heavy springs. So, if you loose air pressure the vehicle will stop and you won´t be able to move it before air-pressure is restored.
One side gets pressure to release the parking brake spring, the other gets pressure to actuate the brake. If pressure is lost, the spring takes over and applies the brake. The parking brake and working brake are separate sides of the same system.
The deuce was equipped with single circuit hydraulic brakes, that were boosted with air. So it has 6 hydraulic drums with an airpack near the master cylinder boosting braking force to 1800psi if I remember correctly. Therefore if a wheel cylinder fails, you lose all brake force except for engine braking, and the incredibly weak driveline parking brake.
Lol who cares about mileage? Rule of cool. Go for something newer though like a 5-ton from the 90's; "Only 90's kids will remem-". Downside: almost 40,000 lbs. You'll need a class B noncommercial Upsides: same price used, parts availability, cummins inline 6 turbodiesel, can theoretically* hit 65 mph with supersingles.
Used there about $500 each but you have to buy the wheels too and you have to flip the drive axle hubs from ins to outs.... and you have to cut the center's out of four original wheels and Bolt the mrap wheels to the Deuces original Wheels in Bolt the deuce Wheels to the news with the mrap wheels bolted to them
