Modifying the Air Intake on a 1500 Kawasaki Fuel Injected Engine To Increase Horse Power

I decided to open up the air box on my 1500 Kawasaki Vulcan engine (Drifter) to increase horse power. There are plenty of air box kits around, I chose to go with Chucksters Customs. Overall I am happy with the product. I will have to wait till next spring to really try it out. For anyone who owns a Drifter here is a forum you need to join if you wish to learn about your bike.

I especially like the Chucksters intake mod because you can return the bike to stock with a minimum amount of effort and expense.

Tracy, where did you get those great header pipe covers? Would love to put them on my Vulcan Nomads and Classics.

do you know the diameter of the filter? I am about to make this by myself, I already removed the solenoids and also whole vacuum tubes. But first of all I need to buy the right size of the filter.

Hello from Sweden! Im doing sort of the same thing with my bike now but i got a question. If you pause the video at 4:39 you can see right by your finger, a hose thats not connected. What is that? Can you just leave it?

So what’s the 3rd and last vacuum tube doing, just hanging out? I see you plugged off the reed valve tube, reconnected the vacuum tube, what about the 3rd tube? It’s almost like you didn’t mention it on purpose

Hi Tracy, great video. I'm considering the Chucksters intake for my 2008 Vulcan 1500 FI classic. My question is, are you running aftermarket pipes and fuel module? If so, which ones do you have. Did you have any difficulties setting up your fuel module to work with the Chuckster intake?
@MsBijouu
@MsBijouu 7 лет назад
Yes I have the Power Commander and the pipes are Road House that came with the bike. After any modification on the fuel system you should have your Fuel controller tuned.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Xa6cPHd-7a8.html

So the idle solenoid vacuum tubes stay blocked? How does it control the idle then?
@mitchtatman2735

What do you do with the other small tube on the left and did you do anything with the idle air electrical connections. do you connect them together or just put them in the tube

I'm a bit confused! You didn't replace the 2 idle control solenoids when you installed the new airfilter... are they not essential to the operation of the motorcycle? I want to do a mod on mine and I'm just a bit curious. Would you please let me know?
@MsBijouu
@MsBijouu 6 лет назад
Hello Sharon, the 2 idle control solenoids only increase the idle when it is cold. If they are removed all you need to do is use the "Fast Idle Knob" ( black knob) right below the ignition key that will increase the idle manually when pulled out all the way. Some think this is a choke but it actually increases the RPM. When the " Cold Idle Solenoids" are removed you may have to pull out the knob on cold mornings until it warms up.

Great vid. I have a 2005 Vulcan 1600 Nomad which appears pretty similar to yours. I have just installed a Baron Big Air Kit. Tell me; what did you do with the top hose (Vacuum Switch Valve Air Hose) after installation?
@MsBijouu
@MsBijouu 6 лет назад
There was a plug and gear clamp that came with the kit. It was blocked off.

Tracy, thanks for the video. Does one have to modify the bike using fuel module if this is done. I have V & H pipes on my 01 Classic FI and would like to install this air intake but do I need to then add fuel module if this is done?!! Thx
@MsBijouu
@MsBijouu 6 лет назад
Unfortunately once you modify both the intake and exhaust it is recommended to use a fuel controller.

Is it back plate necessary? I've got a chrome tornado air kit I need to install on my VN1500, but there doesn't seem to be any sort of backing plate with the kit.
@MsBijouu
@MsBijouu 6 лет назад
Yes, the backing plate forces the air to pass through the filter . Without seeing your air kit I have no way of knowing how it works, it could be fine.

I did the mod on a1600 nomad. I added a cobra fuel manager. Rode to work fine. On the way home the rpm's ran high and stayed there. Any ideas???!!!!

How did you bypass the airflow solenoid? does that shoot an error code if not connected?
@MsBijouu
@MsBijouu 7 лет назад
No error code, you block the tubes going to the solenoids as portrayed in the video.
@ShaneMaverick7
@ShaneMaverick7 7 лет назад
Hi Tracy, I also have a Drifter 1500 that I'm restoring and I was wondering after removing the idle solenoids does this mean your bike has two air filters? what are the benefits of doing this?
@MsBijouu
@MsBijouu 7 лет назад
The left filter on a stock bike is the only filter, when I put the air box on I blocked the air flow from the left side and installed a filter on the right side that was occupied by the idle solenoids, the air tube that went from the left side to the right side restricted the air flow to the engine now it doesn't. The Idea is to increase horsepower. Here is a Forum that you need to join if you have a Drifter. There are people here at the forum that can tell you everything you need to know about your bike.www.vulcandrifterriders.com/forum/index.php

So the 2 air senors do not go back in? Doesn't that mess with idle when cold?
@MsBijouu
@MsBijouu 5 лет назад
Sure it does but you use the fast idle knob when it is cold and push it back in when it warms up. Read the comments below.

It would be a problem if it rains, right?
@MsBijouu
@MsBijouu 6 лет назад
It doesn't appear to affect the performance when it rains, I think it is out of the air flow.

What's wrong with his exhaust? It's a classic look for a classic styled bike.
