Why dont you show people how to clean the spark plugs hole out before you pull the plug so all the dirt rocks criters leave in there don't fall into the cylinder
Always good advice. He reminds me of the owner of a local auto repair shop when I was a kid. Many of the local teen boys would hang around the shop and he would talk through every job he did. Telling us not only what he was doing but why he did it. The boys (including me) would clean the shop, fetch tools and other menial tasks just in order to learn from him. He didn't allow any free-loaders, everyone did something. Much of the learning was also by doing. He allowed some of us to do a job that was always checked by him to ensure it was correct. This was well before de-segregation but there were always non-white teens there, also. He treated everyone the same and with respect. He always addressed each of us by our names or "young man". His was just a two-man shop but a majority of the town folks brought their cars to him. His prices were fair and his work trusted. That was something else he taught us. Treat everyone fairly, deal honestly and keep your word were taught by his actions toward us and his customers. About twenty-five years ago he passed away, well into his 80's. At his funeral, I saw many of the boys (now men) that had frequented his shop to learn not only mechanics but what it meant to be a man. I miss him.
Awesome story Zephaniah, and one everyone should take to heart. He passed on his knowledge through your minds, and it was spread (and grew) through all of you...so his tree of knowledge (and honour and codes) lives on ...thats a better legacy than most.
THIS IS WHAT MEN ARE/WERE MADE OF. Shepherded a generation of next gen Men. These men are needed and need to be celebrated. Only wish women did the same with these ladies 🤦♂️🥹
When you watch a mechanic video that has zero to do with a personal project, but is so entertaining that you watch it anyway, you know it’s legit and amazing. This dude knows his stuff, hands down.
This guy reminds me of my dad so much. He was a master tech and thought EXACTLY like Scotty and could fix anything. I love it when I see people that just own their craft, and they just ooze knowledge about their field so effortlessly.
This was one of the best videos I’ve ever seen on this channel! Instead of just jumping out and saying that a fuel additive will ‘most likely’ help this car - Scotty carried us through an entire diagnostic process that was as logical as it was well-edited. Great job!
Much appreciated 0:10 Differences in cleaners do to differences in 2 or 4 stroke engines and more/different addetives in the gasolin (more addetives more corrosion). 2:50 example | Car accelerates slugish dealers cant fix it 3:10 check the power supplie | batterie & alternator 3:41 general overwiev | check airfilter, all hoses and lines conectet properly, any big pudels of fuel and oil 4:00 check spark plugs | soot on it, "normal" color, messure gap (feeler gages) 3:34 plug in scan tool | check failed modules / error code -> dose it makes sense, could it be the problem? 5:25 checking problem-related measured values | to much MAF (Mass-Air-Flow) -> clogged catalyst? 6:05 checking catalytic converter | messuring persure at an oxigen socet, not needed for the test can be unscrewd (PUT BACK IN AFTER TEST!) 7:45 try different scan tool | long term fuel trim runs fuel rich (~5%); MAF looks good, but we aint trust nothin' 9:16 check air fuel sensor | Sensor 2 first bank looks "lazy" and displays values delayed. 9:54 checking fuel system | long term fuil trim is adding fuel, why? -> sensor says it needs more fuel, why? -> engine running slightly lean, why? -> fuel injectors old and dirty? 10:10 clean fuel injectors | long turn fuel trim back down to 0.8% from ~5% I dont eaven own a car but I just finished my State-certified technician for mechanical engineering and you made a very interesting and good educational video! I dont care what machine it is, I love them all :D greetings from germany
Sorry but he did make 2 assumptions. First, he assumed that the seafoam doesn't work simply because it's an old product and didn't test it. Also, he didn't explain why seafrom doesn't work with 4 strokes and assumed we would know.
@@GE3Music He just said that it doesn't work with gas that contains ethanol and engines with GDI. He didn't test it, as far as we know he's just assuming it doesn't work because it doesn't have the correct additives.
@@GE3Music He explains why? He must have been holding an older can of SeaFoam..... SeaFoam has been reformulated numerous times over the years and is advertised as working with ethanol and non-ethanol blended fuels and has been for several years now. Also, the fuel trims for that Toyota Corolla were just fine. Short Term fuel trims are immediate adaptations whereas Long Term fuel trims are, as implied, long term adaptations. His assumption about the mass airflow sensor reading is wrong as well. Being a 1.8ltr engine has little to do with the mass airflow reading. A reading of 2.34 at idle for a 1.8ltr engine is well within spec and is actually normal. A common cause of poor acceleration on those older Corollas is failing injectors and vacuum leaks, 2 things that mileage has no impact on.
Its always nice to see someone from a generation before mine that understands technology. If my mum doesn't understand a word like "download" or "refresh" its almost like she panics and then pretends she has no interest rather than taking the minute to have it explained
Scotty is a legend and a hero, imagine all the thousands of hours and dollars he has saved for so many people over the years. His value is immeasurable. I hope Scotty lives forever
I don't know why RU-vid recommended this video to me (I haven't watched any car videos and don't know much about vehicle mechanics), but I'm glad it did. I watched from start to end and enjoyed every moment. This man is gold!
I love this guy. most of the time he just reinforces what you already know but sometimes that's what's needed. Recently CR gave Dodge high rankings but he insists Chrysler products suck. I'll listen to Scotty.
This man here deserves some sort of award or at least recognition for what he does. He helps people repair their cars and doesn't try to charge you for it. He has helped me work on my cars and avoid going to the mechanic. I'm sure there are many people that have benefited from his videos as well.
@@piedadstoffel5955 44k is great but quite expensive. Try the Lucas Ethanol conditioner with green label instead. 1/4 the cost, exact same cleaning and clog clearing ability. Diagnoses any fuel system fault by immediately increasing performance and lost power. Yet the problem is people think this fixed the problem. No it merely diagnosed the real problem. Ethanol breaks down and contaminates the entire fuel system. The only way to truly restore a faulty engine without codes is to completely manually clean the entire fuel system and replace injectors. Thus why they're so cheap these days. Supply is high because they really aren't suppose to last more than 100k these days. So... There's still a ton of info this guy is not sharing.
Although, there is logical sense to it. There is also stuff available online called “stock footage” etc. I like how Scotty keeps things simple and relatable. He and his team do a great job.
Scotty has an Emmy Award?? Wow! "Scotty Kilmer is a popular RU-vidr from the United States who runs his own self-titled automotive channel. He has an estimated net worth of $14.5 million. His content is mainly about teaching people how to fix their cars when they get various problems and generally how cars work. His schedule includes tool giveaways, auto repair videos, viewers’ car mod show off, viewer car Q&A and live Q&A. Scotty has been a mechanic for the past 50 years and has a masters degree from the University of Illinois. He published a book back in 1994 called Everyone’s Guide To Buying A Used Car. He hosted a show named “Crank It Up” on CBS for 10 years which earned him an Emmy Award."
@@jasonp.brunke3601 Scotty doesn't care about money. It's just something that happens while he lives his life. He's not working, he's doing what he loves.
@@youtubesucksdonkeyd6906 love your name and I agree lol... my 10 year old once told me she wanted to be a youtuber... Same. Until I walk outside and pop the hood and actually start thinking about it. Then I'm like no, this probably won't be as easy as the videos make it look.
This guy reminds me of my dad so much. My dad is a painter that always tells me the construction site was his school and university . Person like this always talk like they fell in love with their craft and work and it’s so refreshing. You don’t meet many people like him or my dad now in days.
This was a very informative video. I usually do all of my own mechanic work because I'm surprised at how many mechanics don't follow logical thought progression to eliminate possible problems. Videos like this help me fix my own vehicles! Thank you!
The problem is that cars are getting so high tech that many probably forget to do just the basic things first, they run straight to the computer. When I took small engines class in highschool, the first thing our teacher taught us was "if the engine isn't running, does it have fuel?". Then proceeded down the list of things like air, spark, etc. I know cars aren't "small engines", but a lot of the same rules apply.
Yeah and there are few old school mechanics left who actually repair stuff. Most just unbolt whole assemblies and fit new…if that don’t fix it, do another one…cos afterall it’s only customer money and the more you fit the more money you make right.
@@cujoedaman First thing I check if a car won't start is usually battery, battery connections, and alternator. You don't know how many times I've seen people be: "oh my car won't start!", and the problem be able to be solved by simply cleaning the battery posts and or connections. This is usually the first thing mechanics are taught to check. The second is what you're saying, which is checking there is fuel, and it's getting to the engine, and then spark, air, and so on. These are the basics that I even see so called mechanics forget to check in the proper order far too often. Edit: Notice the first thing Scotty went for was the battery in this video, which is always the right call, even when it's not the problem, at least you have determined that is not the problem.
As a software developer, I really appreciate the way Scotty chases down mechanical errors like finding bugs in code. This man is not a mechanic, he's an engineer.
Engineers design and implement, mechanics troubleshoot and repair. And you've got it backwards - Software engineers chase down bugs in code like tradesmen chase down problems in mechanical systems.
@@stevo184 Are you the grammar police? English is confusing and doesn't make sense to those of us who are dyslexic,....I could still understand what he typed though.

Watching Scotty as I got older , I’m so glad I knew what this was before he said it . He taught me that . Awesome job Scotty 💪🏽 best mechanic I’ve ever watched
I sure do wish this guy were my car mechanic; nothing gets past him! Thorough 100%. He's not merely a very good mechanic, he's a genius, no exaggeration.
In his younger years there were grocery stores. Now there’s grocery chains. Blue collar workers are doomed. But I would kill for a chain of auto repair shops under Scotty’s management. As suggested above in the comments.
07 Corolla is a great car! My one friend bought one with 200k on it, drove it till 285k when it ended up with a bent frame from an accident. Then my brother in law bought it and ran it in bush car races and barrel races. When he finally lost 1st and second gear on the 5 speed transmission; I put the motor in my 03 matrix and still daily drive it. It's around 314k now and still running strong!
@@fakenamefakeaccount7174 I had plenty of great teachers in high school, and I went to a public school in a low-income area. Some teachers just have no love for their job, and see it as nothing more than a way to keep their bills paid.
Problem is some old people who have "been doing it for 50 years" give awful advice and lean on their "experience". Like the guy at AutoZone who got mad at me for telling him I thought it was an incredibly questionable suggestion to run 20w-50 oil in a Honda 4 cylinder. Of course I was right, 20w-50 would be absurd, but he swore he'd been doing it for decades.
@@CIARUNSITE yea you definitely gotta be cautious usually a sign is them still being that said trade to keep up with the times… I remember one auto parts dude telling dextos shouldn’t go in Honda’s… I made the most confused face , like tf are you even saying my guy. Scotty Kilmer, this is one of the reasons I started watching your show. You're extremely honest and you explain things fully. You're a great auto mechanic I wish you were around Erie, Pennsylvania where I'm from, because I would go to you for honest answers needed. Mechanics these days the majority of them only want you there for one thing, to suck your bank account dry and give you no answers. We need more mechanics like you in the world, honest and to the point. Thank you for everything you do. John in Erie, Pennsylvania.
the heck with borrowing mechanic books from the library or buying Haynes manuals.....just go buy a smartphone or tablet or computer and go RU-vid and watch Scotty!
Scotty is literally the king of auto mechanics on youtube. I don't even have car issues half of the time I watch his videos. The entertainment amd education is so valuable. His videos are classroom worthy in schools 👊🧡👍
Nice to see actual diagnostic ptocedure being followed, with checks that say, "so it's not ...." gives a real idea of how to diagnose logically, not just jump to a conclusion without knowing how you get to there. Thank you Scotty.
I started using that royal purple cleaner because of you and followed your direction andmy car got an extra mpg rage increase. I've used others and did't have much change. It works is all I'm saying and thank-you for all you do for your fellow man in this inflation era that saves us money!
Been a loyal viewer for over 10 years now and it's never felt like there has ever been a shortage of helpful content. I have an 05 tacoma partly because of Scotty. Cars and especially motorcycles I've always been a proponent of fuel additives, really solid advice as always, and greatly appreciated.
I appreciate seeing the way you diagnosed that. I'd love to see more videos like this one where you show us step by step the things you do to diagnose car problems.
It’s called logic! Deduction and knowledge of odb ll pro tool. The one that cost $5k. Not the $120 which those will get you there a lot if the times but deep analysis cars operation. Oxygen, air fuel environmental , spark etc.
Knowledge and the proper scan tool. Scotty, has both but the average DIY doesn't. A high end scan would identify which fuel injector was malfunctioning but diagnosing to get you there takes knowledge.
high end scan tool would not identify a bad injector. injectors are outputs. they are not imputs. all injectors would read would the same MS output. you could do a cylinder power balance test and they would all pass. They may even say rich. which most mechanics would identify as dirty valves and still run injector cleaner through the system which is a missdiagnos which fixes the problem anyways. The truth is a computer cant tell you where it hurts it dosnt even know where it hurts. that car will never throw a code. you could run thousands of dollors in scopes and tools and hours of diagnostics. or you can "kiss" keep it simple and sweet. Which he did and that will fix 99% of the issues in the trade. I do nothing but diagnostics as a mechanic and people over complicate simple systems with complicated tests and ignore basics
That Royal Purple stuff dropped my fuel consumption by about 0,5 L/100km. I used it after you recommended it in the older video. I was really impressed!
I used to use Amsoil PI (Performance Improver) on a track car I have. I can say this: When I looked through the spark plug hole, I could see that the piston top was covered with carbon deposits. After running a tank of fuel containing PI, I could look through the plug holes and see that the piston tops were bare, shiny aluminum. So the stuff definitely did something. Whether it made the engine run better or not, I cannot say.
Scotty got tired of everyone's b******* and started talking to his mind and how not to get screwed over this guy is a genius man. I'm so glad he come out full throttle to tell and try to help everyone
Well yeah, since those scumbags mechanics are stupid because they just cant realize that if they works sucks, people eventually move faster to EV or shared vehicles and those idiots will eventually loose jobs
I bought a 97 Ford Interceptor in 07. It sat a long time before i got it. I drove it a couple hundred miles home. It did lack power and had poor acceleration. I put in a can of Seafoam and drove it around to get it through the fuel system. The next day it started and ran at least 80 percent better. After a couple of days it ran like new. Last year a friend did it with his F150 around 125k miles. His truck ran better and milage improved. These were not carbon problems, but varnish in the injectors.
I had a similar experience with my wife's 32 year old Nissan. I added some super STP cleaner in the fuel tank and it smoothed out her car's running. The stuff works! 👍👍👍
dude, scotty is awesome! i wish there were more "teachers" with this kind of attitude teaching a bunch of garage mechanics or any diy trade for that matter

I use Automotive Wolf car care software to track and monitor the maintenance and fuel economy all my vehicles. I used this Max-Clean on my 2010 Toyota Corolla at 250,000 miles because the gas mileage dropped from 34 to 27 mpg. Now 3 tanks of gas later my mpg is around 32 so it does seem to have worked. I will try it again soon.
Been using Gumout complete system cleaner for years. I recommend that cleaner wholeheartedly. I use it especially during long driving trips..... I track my SUVs' gas milage, idling and acceleration. Was never disappointed.

Hey Scotty, Love the play by play search for the problem. Good to be a witness rather than being told what was done. Appreciate you every day. Scotty says........
Good video, Scotty. My 06 Accord was having problems stuttering on take off and dirty fuel injectors turned out to be the culprit. I started using 93 octane at the pump and every other fill up using a fuel additive. This was 6 or 7 years ago and I haven't had an issue since then.

I appreciate how Scotty clips out the boring part where he turns a wrench for ten minutes before he starts with the pertinent part. That's excellent showmanship, Mr. Kilmer.
I love Scotty!! He's been like a younger brother or cousin to me helping me keep my 2006 car on the road. He gives good advice while explaining the reasons & showing how he uses the tools, in addition to giving the information on buying the tools. In a world of money grabbers... Be a Scotty!! ☮️🥰🙏🏼
Loving the voice on this guy... I mean this is better than a gentle lawn mower on a Sunday afternoon while having a nap... You've done alright my friend.
Always love you videos Scottie, you give me confidence to work on my car, and always sort my issues out. As we say in New Zealand. What a bloody legend
Hmm. I worked as a [class C] fleet mechanic in the oil fields for almost 10 years. We used Sea Foam regularly and had amazing results. We had one pickup come in that I thought the engine was about to go, we added a can of SF and it came right back to life. Having said that I think Scotty is one of the best car guys I've seen so I believe what he says. I used to used Gumout at oil changes on my own vehicles before I discovered SF. I was surprised to learn it had been around for decades but didn't know it was formulated for 2 stroke engines. I've been putting SF in my 2006 Ford Ranger about once every couple of months which is going on 200,000 miles and have had zero issues. Now I'm unsure if I should change.
Me too. I've read the none of them work so well with direct injection because of they don't wash around the injectors before getting ignited. Used to use seafoam at least with every oil change on older cars. No I'm wondering if I should try the gumout.
I had the opposite happen. I had a Saturn with a tiny tick in the engine ran it like that for 6000 miles some one told me it sounds like a lifter tick to me run a can of sea foam. Well like a dummy I listened to him even though my stethoscope sounded like piston slap or something lower even. Well sea foam helped me diagnose a bad rod bearing become in about 1 mile after adding that crap the small ticking sound got louder and ended up being a rod bearing knocking. So I will leave the sea foam on the shelf.
If it has been working keep using it. SF has been formulated to also work on 4 stroke and diesel. Read the back of the can. Don’t know why Scotty doesn’t mention this.
I love watching Scotty. I trust him completely and he is so dad-gum smart. I keep waiting for him to take flight as he waves his arms with every remark!
Except when he was saying over and over that electric vehicles would never be popular and then later said the only electric vehicles that would become successful would be hydrogen cell ones because the charging station network won't be big enough
I like this guy. I feel like I’m watching an old commercial from the 90’s yet it’s not up to date (for the most part), funny and informative. I appreciate your work,
I had to do some major work on my diesel motor and I have been using a fuel additive for years. I checked on RU-vid to how everyone did the work and saw they all had carbon and slight sludge everywhere. Mine had none ! Clean as a new one and I couldn’t believe it and it was a good testimony to how well that stuff works !
@@nathanhickman1728 not sticking with a particular brand but I have been rotating between a few different ones . Penrite , Valvoline and Nulon. Probably all similar ingredients but I don’t look. If it says it cleans it goes in.
The ATS product is the one. It REALLY works. My journeys are pretty standard every week, so I used a full tank and mpg was 26mpg. Added the ATS product as per directions and drove until I needed to refuel. After refuelling there was a noticeable difference in acceleration and engine noise. When I needed to refuel I checked mpg and it was 29.8!! Since then it's continued to improve too. I'm looking forward to using the oil additive before the service.
I like this guy and trust him. If I had a choice in mechanics it would be him because he comes across as honest enough to admit if he was wrong and to keep his mind open and check the small possibilities before calling for a major repair.
I really hope you inspire many mechanics who watch your channel to think the way you do with regard to your approach to craftsmanship and customer service. Your a gem Scotty.
I've found that the black container of injector cleaner from Dollar Tree works better than anything. It's cheap too! I did a study and have tried them all by watching my fuel economy found it to best. I used to work in the automotive engineering industry and it smells just like the chemical that is specified to test fuel level senders during fuel tank and fuel level sender vibration testing. When we would use this chemical it was imperative that we used rubber gloves as it was a very strong chemical.
