Legendary rig, this should be a signature bundle, you've done the hard work with trial and error of figuring out such a barebones appoachable setup, great sounds as always
Benders new mothership is a cure for GAS. What else could you need? Sure there are other modules but if you go through his design it is well thought out and pretty much complete. And he has room to swap stuff in and out if he wants to try something else in the blender. Then again, it cost as much as a house.
Absolute best module to combine with Mimetic Digitalis: Doepfer A-151 Quad Sequential switch. Patch Steppy into the switch I/O input, then patch the 4 outputs into N, X, Y, R. Use another Steppy channel to advance the switch every 2, 3 or 4 bars. Now you get the simplicity of 4 notes repeated across a row, maybe 2x times. Then twice through a single Y column. Then 2 bars of random, then 2 bars of N, stepping through two rows. Then Random means that the next time through, you’ll be on a different X or a different Y. Or maybe not... controlled randomness!
Dude, I love how approachable you make modular synthesis. It's so common for people to get crazy complex with a patch for the sake of it, but you've honed this system down to this super musical case! No frills, just purpose-driven playability - awesome.
Every time I think I have defeated my urge to go back to modular, Ricky makes a modular video, and then I'll spend days on ModularGrid... Quality content, mate!
I love everything about this. I don't necessarily make house music, but I'm a big fan of controlled randomness. My next modular purchase will likely be something from this video for sure.
I tried go full modular for almost two years but came along to the similar idea. Musical controlled randomness is a perfect explanation of this idea. Thanks for sharing your thoughts
Ricky's rack is a pragmatic solution to his musical intentions. Structure and Spontaneous Exploration and Arrangements Colin Bender's rig feels geared more toward the "Endless Frontier of Possibilities" side of our beloved Modular World. I, INTELLECTUALLY, wanna be Ricky (Modular in service to MY STUFF!)... But my fear, is that I'm a secret Colin! (GIVE ME THE SPACESHIP OF CREATIVITY!!)
Hey, thanks for these videos by the way. Between these mini modular house videos and Mylar's Suggested Systems, it made me feel confident in getting an 84hp case and knowing I can make something I'll enjoy playing in it.
Don't understand the tech babble, but enjoyed seeing your face and energy shift into the zone when that bassline clicked. Sounded great man, love the vibe
Hey Ricky thanks for the modular content and the evolution of your work. Thanks to your approach I've been seriously interested in trying modular out. I definately want a subharmonicon feature-set with some great additions I see you work with.
Yo I am actually watching your videos multiple times in a row because I got the same feeling like I'm listening to a really good song that i just need to vibe to again and again. What you're doing is a whole unique form of art itself! Always a pleasure to hang with you man 🤜🤛
Constraints and purpose. Most of the modular videos I’ve watched have a certain bleep bloop paralysis of choice. Since everything is possible, nothing is preferable. Good video again. Thanks Ricky.
I have a similar Noise Engineering heavy mini system. I'll often switch out which of their 10HP oscillators I'm using (I have all of them) to change the feel of what I'm working on. I love their equipment. Really digging the Manis Iteritas right now. Though I'm thinking of building out another 62HP system with some Qu-Bit modules, too. Small systems don't always prevent GAS. 😉
Yo controlled randomness! It’s the evolution of Jazz! Knowing all the notes possible so you can pluck the right notes out of thin air. This is a similar way I like to build my solos. Trying to figure how to do hardware that allows me to do this. Feels good feels right that’s how you get it there!
Ricky? why the heck did you get 2 thumbs down on this lol, like I know what you are going to talk about when i saw the video title lol like who gets like "ohhh no im gonna thumbs down this" lolol love the channel bro, liked and subscribed
What a freakin' chill poolside house track!!! Its like Eno-House; I'd forgotten I was listening to it till it was over which created a disturbance in my LIFE
very cool train of thought and presentation of this idea on how to use randomness in small doses. I think Lightbath called this 'gardening' in regards to playing your modular and I always liked that. You set a certain situation with it and then you garden that patch until you have something cool that would not be there if the modular wouldn't talk back :D
So, cool thing - If you want a similar effect over midi, the motif functionality on the NDLR by Conductive Labs does some of the same magic that the steppy, mimetic digitalis, and scales combo does here.
Weird my comment got deleted. Just a few question - Do you ever use chance on Steppy? Could get more randomness that way. And what stand are you using for the rack? It looks really handy!
Dude you are starting to look like Bo Beats with that long hair. Love the Surface from Qu-bit what a great chord voice for house! Wanted the Intellijel case but they are never available for sale and out of stock! I highly recommend the Jomox Modbase 09 MK2 kick drum for eurorack. Hands down the hardest hitting beefiest drum. Nice house jam. I really love using Euclidian Circles for drums and Eloquencer for sequencer beats.
nice composition technique, im going to trying mimic small form changes recorded to the DAW rather than the classical approach thats difficult to get all the effects to.
Yo Ricky, a simple trick to find the key is to hum a note that fits the key of the song. When you ‘drone’ it try to listen and find it sitting in the middle of the notes in the track. I hope I’m clear enough. Then hum it to your keyboard/piano and find the note, thats your key!
I don't see any VCAs, attenuators, inverters, shifts, logic, etc, other than mentioning a mult. They say you need them, but so many euroracks out there don't have any. I'm always using a great deal of them in VCV Rack, as if you need an entire rack section just for utilities.
Love your videos man have you ever used a Akai force. That thing is right up your alley part Ableton part Mpc and works well with Modular setups. Keep the 4 on the floor lol
Hey Ricky, i got a quite similar setup with a Metron. what i recently bought for the 1u spot was the Apex by plum audio. Not sure if this is what you are after, but definitely a lot of possibilities in a small package.
Love your skills as always, not too sure whether samples can be easily comped with a random sequenced bass or lead line? Without setting all the parameters for the rhythmic and harmonic shifts within the riff the unison lines outputted will be just on the wrong side of close enough for jazz - almost like a pianist trying to play along with a never heard before jazz song but they have no fingers. Some of the noted they play will fit but mainly, not so much. A harmonic envelope generator that could track key harmonic pitch value and output a control voltage within the sample would be a game changer for improvisation with modular. If there is anything like that I'd personally be interested for my setup.
If I'm understanding what you're saying, the Scales module does that. Mimetic is sending random CV into scales, and scales quantizes that CV into the notes he has set that match the samples he is using.
@@Jimmyzegg I see that but what I'm hearing isn't gelling and notes stick out in their pitch and rhythm which would require, to align more musically, some kind of envelope follower type afair that tracked the syncopation and pitch of the sample and converted the pitch into the correct cv and gate somehow. Failing this you would have to make sure the four notes you chose will fit over the chord changes wherever the mimetic spits them out into the quantizer. That task would get incrementally more difficult as the length and harmonic complexity of the sample increased.
everything sounds amazing, but i gotta point out... that open hi hat was old and cheezy in the 90s, not sure why it's still so popular... i guess i'm just a crotchetty old man...
The steppy 1u has been sold out basically everywhere for over a year and intellijel can't tell me when they'll have more it's really frustrating. I have a similarly small setup where I copied the steppy+MD setup but it just has this giant hole in it >.
the K-Pop look rules actually! Also- Why not run the modular CV outs to the Pro 3, and vice-versa? Also Also: You've gotten so much better at keys! Your practice really shows
