Damnit I've got a cat, no wonder I'm looking into building a modular synth lol. Great videos man, really helping me start out building one.

I agree that cardboard can work OK, but if you cut it clean, and use rack screws to attach it... it actually will look pretty decent and have some strength. I use 1/8" hardboard and spraypaint it black.

You're welcome :) How's it going with you modular plans?
@nycpny8396
@nycpny8396 10 лет назад
***** well, it's gonna take me time to build a system,&I think it will be a basic system to use asking with my other gear.I think I'd have to really think it through about what exactly I'm looking to get out of a modular before I go thru the trouble of building& learning how to use it, but I already bought a HE kit, an osc&vcf, I already spent$600-$700 ! & it's not near of complete system.
@nycpny8396
@nycpny8396 10 лет назад
***** that's why I did consider the pittsburg synth box module, because it's a complete single voice, but as you said it has less flexibility as the separate modules. We'll see what I decide because I like electronic music but I don't like to complicate the music making process,I like to put a track together without it being very technical& having to troubleshoot. There's a video of a guy Mike dobbler on muff wiggler,I like what he had going on, don't ask me how he did it, but it did seem somewhat melodic& not overly to huge of a system, so it looked interesting. I like your tracks too, you know what you're doing.
@tuesdaynightmachines
@tuesdaynightmachines 10 лет назад
That sounds very reasonable :) Go at it slow and experiment with what you have. Great! Link me to some audio or videos of your experiments, if you post some online :)

I was thinking about using cardboard yesterday to fill up the blanks in my case - so nice to see that you're posting this. Are there any safety hazards connected to using cardboard though? Couldn't they potentially heat up and catch fire, or am I being overly dramatic? :)
@tuesdaynightmachines
@tuesdaynightmachines 10 лет назад
I don't think they will catch fire, as they shouldn't touch the transformer or other electronic parts that can become hot. Cardboard can easily be pushed in though, so I'd only recommend it for home/studio use, i.e. in a calm environment and not on stage or when there many people/animals around, who might bump into your modular.

Can you do a video on how to deal with my obsessive need to perfectly fill a case. IE specifically buying modules with width in mind and/or putting them in a sub-optimal location, simply to ensure there are no blind panels needed. ;) Doesn't stop me sticker-bombing my blind panels for the rare times they are in use though. :)
@tuesdaynightmachines
@tuesdaynightmachines 7 лет назад
+cj1000xyu Sorry, can't help you there unfortunately :-P I can send you some stickers though, if you write me your address via private message or email or something.

What modules where in your first system from the picture?
@tuesdaynightmachines
@tuesdaynightmachines 9 лет назад
Carlosonebillion from left to right: Theremin Voltage Source, Dual Inverter, VCA, VCO, Theremin Voltage Source - all from Doepfer :)
@Carlosonebillion
@Carlosonebillion 9 лет назад
Thanks so much! So can the VCA output to speakers? I've been having trouble figuring out whether I need a mixer or headphone amp out of the gate. Also, do I need a power switch module or just the switch on the back of an LC6?
@tuesdaynightmachines
@tuesdaynightmachines 9 лет назад
Carlosonebillion yes, you can output anyt module's audio output to a speaker, however you might need to attenuate it, because modular levels are really loud. I usually go from a mixer module into my recorder nowadays. Regarding a switch: you don't need one at all, but certainly not two. The ones you see in the front on modules are usually power systems themselves, so you don't need those if you already have a power bus in your Doepfer case.
@Carlosonebillion
@Carlosonebillion 9 лет назад
Thanks again. This is a huge help. I just wanted to be certain that my system would be able to make sound as soon as I start figuring out how to patch it. Your videos have been very helpful as well, by the way.
@BerudPL

i don't get it, how stupid should i be to touch busboard when its powered, even if i am stupid enough to do this its still 12volts, i know about electicity from wall (230v in my case) but all that connections are fine protected, masked. also i have a cat but he can't play with my modular if its powered. so im aginst Your opinon. also You didn't mention great reason to buy blind panel = it's great for Your diy project like multipes or some attenuators et c. but still really like this series, now i need to show it to my girlfriend :D
@tuesdaynightmachines
@tuesdaynightmachines 10 лет назад
I'm glad you're not that stupid, and I hope that nobody else is! But accidents can still happen. You might not electrocute yourself immediately, but you still might short circuit something in your modular, if you drop a cable inside it for example. The thing about the cat wasn't meant to be so serious ;-) Blind panels are definitely great for DIY, but I plan to talk about that in another video. Thanks a lot for watching :)
@BerudPL
@BerudPL 10 лет назад
***** i could agree about droping cables only if i would use skiff cases.
