I just made a set of these myself, and spent about $250 on materials alone. Since the Tacoma bed is 57” wide, you can’t just use a single 4x8 sheet of plywood. You need 2 sheets. You can try crappy plywood from Lowe’s or Home Depot but to get the same weight rating as these bam beds you need a higher quality plywood with more layers and no voids. High quality 3/4” birch plywood costs around $120-$130 per sheet. It took me an entire afternoon and I didn’t even add handle cut outs to mine. If I had to do it again, I’d probably just buy the Bam Beds. The price really is pretty reasonable when you actually take the time to consider everything involved.

The folks at BamBeds are cool and willing to do customization upon request. They were able to create one for me and my girlfriend without all the oval hand cutouts. Mine was designed to be taken out of the bed and quickly assembled into a three sided booth complete with custom heart shaped glory hole. The gal and I set it up alongside busy 4x4 trails for lonely overlanders.

I'm making some. Measured today 57 1/8 in. bed width x 24 inch section width (I have a 6 foot bed). 3 pieces for me. I'll end up some usable scrap that's 24 inches wide, maybe enough to do my kitchen counter tops. I like this set up since you can stack the boards and get to the bins underneath, and also have room for larger stuff like an ice chest or dog crate.

Wouldn’t it be better to just use an inflatable air mattress on the truck bed to sleep on? Or even a conventional twin mattress. You’ve already taken all your camping supplies out so I don’t see the need for a platform.

Howdy. I am researching into getting a Tacoma. I need an opinion. Short or long bed? I really thing the longer bed will work better for me as I am used to a full size truck. But also the shorter has advantages too. I need some of your thoughts.

I did something similar to this in mine. But i ran two 2x6's horizontally and then 2 pieces of plywood running front to back cut right down the middle. The tops of the horizontal pieces lined right up with the wheel wells and the longer pieces laid on all of it. Still able to break it down and lay it down flat if you need the entire height of your bed. Which was important to me because i ran a camper shell. But i liked the extra space under it. Way cheaper if you are a little handy but that was before Bidens inflation so who knows know

@@TRDJon assuming you got the mid-size long bed model. How is the fit for the long bed Tacoma? How is the seal on the topper for rain? I live in the PNW and it rains a lot here. Also, how does it hold up to highway speeds?
