When Mercury decided to go drag racing in 1964, it essentially had to start from scratch. Its new Cyclone, the performance version of the compact Comet, would provide a good platform for lightweight modifications, and the division could borrow some high-performance engines from the Ford parts shelf, but Mercury needed drivers. Fortunately, according to Charles Morris, writing in Factory Lightweights: Detroit’s Drag Racing Specials of the ’60s, GM’s formal exit from drag racing freed up a number of top drivers for Fran Hernandez to recruit: Ronnie Sox, Ed Schartman, and Nicholson. Of the 21 A/FX Comets that Dearborn Steel tubing built for Mercury in 1964, using 427-cu.in. High-Riser engines, all but one used Cyclone two-door hardtop bodies. The last one, Nicholson’s, used a four-door station wagon body for better weight distribution over the rear axle, and though he switched to a Cyclone partway through the season, he also recorded high 10-second passes and notched up 63 straight wins to go undefeated in match races that year.
For 1965, Nicholson returned in a Cyclone, this time built by Bill Stroppe Engineering using many of the same tricks as the 1964 A/FX cars: fiberglass front bumper, fenders, hood, and doors; custom traction bars; Plexiglas windows; and lightweight bucket seats. Instead of the pushrod 427s, however, Morris wrote that Mercury’s Al Turner convinced Ford to release a handful of its hemi-head SOHC 427 engines to the Mercury team, one of which ended up in Nicholson’s A/FX Cyclone, backed by a four-speed and 9-inch rear axle. With a single four-barrel carburetor, the SOHC was generally considered good for 615 horsepower from the factory, but with some massaging and another four-barrel from Nicholson, his engine reportedly produced somewhere in the neighborhood of 700 horsepower. Nicholson remained atop the match-race heap throughout the year, consistently turning in mid-10-second timeslips, not only by constantly tuning the SOHC engine, but also by altering the Cyclone’s wheelbase, leading the way for march of the funny cars in later years.

Step 1. Watch your Videos, Step 2. Buy this kit, Step 3. Follow you tips! Step 4. Enjoy the build! Step 5. Master the complicated process of applying Future to the finished build! Step 5. Suggestion: Future can be used to glue in the clear glass if you 'age ' it. Step 6. Reply to your video with a thumbs up! Step 7. My favourite part: applying the glass from outside the model, BRILLIANT!!! Too bad it took until Moebius to figure this out! Love the Videos.

I remember Dyno Don, saw him run at Vargo. It was Chevy against Ford against Mopar. Them were the days when all you needed was a set of headers, a pair of M&H's, a shifter, a tune on the carb and ignition timing and you were ready to run. You could be competitive for under $500 with the right car.😀 Cheezus it was a great era for drag racing and the 'Swamp Rat'. Thanx for this. 👍👍

Looks like a great kit. I started building models in the early mid 60's and remember paying US$0.99 to US$1.50 for these 1/25 scale cars. That's the normal retail price, not a sale price. Ah, how times change. Thanks for the review of this kit.

Pretty nice kit. Superb building as always. Reminds me of my uncle's 67 Caliente. Almost bought that car, but I was not even 18 yet and my folks discouraged me from buying it as there was work to do on it. Last I heard of that car, the guy who bought it from my uncle, took the 289 out of it and put it in a Mustang, then scrapped the car. That said, it's the first time I think I hear, if not anger, a slight annoyance in your voice about a "really hard" to do technique and a liberate use of sarcasm. I thought you were the Bob Ross of modeling. But now, I'm not too sure. lol

Poster tack. Or it's called Blue Tack as well. Doesn't need storage, just tear off hunks and use it, then put the chunk back on the ball of blue tack when done. Can be used for years, painted, etc.

I can see Dyno Don & Grumpy getting ready to stage & then waiting for the Christmas tree @ home track... New England Dragway in N.H ! It was a big track in the late 70's , had some down years but is now back and bigger than ever with a multi- million dollar upgrade & is now hosting huge NHRA National Events ! ✌😎 Dragracing builds are the best.... especially the old A/FX cars 😉 Keep building.... great channel ! ☺

Thanks! Right? I say "Brush it on" and get 500 questions "But tell me the name and exact size of brush" "Do I brush it north or south?" "Is it an Ammo AK $500 mink hair from an Antarctic buffalo riding hair brush?" Folks have gotten so wound up watching other perfectionists saying they have to do things a certain way only they are afraid to just grab a brush and get it done.

I've been using your black or white base coat tip then misting the colors for " pre defined" finishes. I've also gotten silver pencils and acrylic color pens. No camera tricks involved in your videos - WOW it all works! Oh, I layed down a thick layer of white glue on a smooth floor board that needed carpeting. Just as the glue started to skim over I stippled with a stiff brush. After paint - 1/25 scale carpet. Thanks again for sharing...

Seeing the part trees and then seeing how they go together is one of the things I like about your channel. Of course, your personality is the big reason. I heard your statement about "back seat delete" option and it reminded me of little known packages for both GM and Ford. As you know, cars are sold with codes for the packages. Well, there was no internet in '90, when I graduated HS. Knowing the codes was difficult. Both manufacturers had radio delete options. This also removed A/C compressor, all power functions, and, in the case of the Pontiac T/A, black side moldings. The Mustang was only available as a coupe. There were some other things the option pkg changed, don't remember. But what it gave the buyer was a factory built, street legal, acceleration monster!

Thanks Stu, yeah you used to be able to check off boxes and have them build you a real one-off car for your money.

Is there a model of Arnie "The Farmer" Beswicks "Tameless Tiger" GTO? If not, there should be! Imagine building a starting line diorama with Dyno Don and The Farmer in a late 60s match race! Or, how about "Ohio George" Montgomery against either one? I could go on and on lol!

Revell might have made one but I'm sure a viewer will chime in and help find it if there is one out there.

Hey Buddy Thanks for the inspiration. When I was building models in the 80s I was into the airbrush. at that time rattle cans could not give me a finish that an airbrush could. Have a rattle cans changed? And why do you use them?
@hpiguy
@hpiguy 5 лет назад
I use both. I just take advantage of the speed and no cleaning ease of the rattle can quite a bit.
