Sometimes, a mistake can make a model look even more interesting. Changing the narrative is great, since you made the car look like a real wip. Well done.

I was doing a 50 chevy truck and wanted it to be a show quality truck so I took my time and had a similar mishap on it . I sat for a long time trying to think of what to do so I looked through some decals and found some I liked . The theme went from show truck to shop truck and the more I looked at it the more I liked it I lost my leg and have heart problems as well and getting back into modeling is my mental therapy . I am getting ready to start the duster just like this . Before I start to do one I always see if you have a video of one to give me ideas and to see if they are hard to go together or what so thanks for giving me so many ideas you don't realize how much you've showed and helped me .

That body actually turned out great. My friend had a 340 Duster and I want to build this kit just like his car - thermoquad intake, sneaker pipes and headers, and bondo, primer, and rust holes on both quarter panels. They all were like that by 1980. That engine has great detail.. I'm thinking this along with the MPC Demon engine might make great diorama material - this car with the MPC engine and headers with the great engine from this kit on a stand with the heads off and all that rocker arm and engine block detail showing. There's even a dude standing in the other kit to make my friend working on his car, back when we were kids with rusted out hotrods. Thanks for a great channel. BTW as I watch the end of this I'm prompted to say: unibody cars that are not undercoated with be body color all over the underside except the things bolted to the body.But everyone (you're not alone in this) paint the bottom of the car black most of the time.

I was building an exact replica of my dad's 2002 Corvette and l kept screwing things up so l would put it away till l went back to it, well the paint on it oxidized and turned brown, l stripped it 3 times till l got it perfect, l blamed it on moving and got out of sync building cars, lt turned out to be my best build ever. Gave it to him for Father's Day.

Years ago (80s) I had a project build of a 50s style 50 Ford custom. When it came time for paint, there wasn't an area of this car that not been massaged. It was to be a cherry red with a snow white insert on the side. Every time I would get to the last coat (where you REALLY build some gloss) my spray can would spit, or dribble, or screw up in some way!. Back then we used brake fluid to strip paint, so off to the tank it would go! The first time it went to the tank, I wasn't sure what would transpire with all of the filler I had used in the chopping, filling, molding,and sectioning etc. Luckily the bodywork held! I had to strip it THREE times, Each time I used a new can of paint! Finally it was done, and smooth as glass! The car was named "Heartbreaker' and went on to win many awards and was runner-up for the best model of the 80s. Whoever said model building was a good way to relax??? LOL

Anyone else notice the engine parts had detail that would look good with the motor partially torn down? Rocker arms in the top of the heads. Holes in the intake manifold for the 6 pack carbs. Cylinder holes in the block, etc.

I really love this car. I usually prefer British sports cars, but also like the look of a lot of the Plymouths. My local model shop has this same kit at the moment so I think I will have to get it before it becomes unavailable again. Funny that you have done the work in progress look for this kit. On Grandpa Mark's channel he built the same kit and did it as a college student's first car, complete with primer and rusty spots. Maybe I'll have to continue the tradition, although I would prefer to make it a pristine example. I guess it depends on whether I mess up the paint job.

Hot Rod Mag's "Roadkill" has an episode on a BIG BLOCK Duster, and I plan to build my own idea of a 440 Duster with an "in-restoration" body like what you've done here. I love the build. Very creative in the paint job fixxer upper. Looks like a beautiful kit. I did a custom 2 tone tribute to the old gulf livery from yesterday year. Similar to what happened to you the panel line accenter went crazy, or I did. I simply added more color. It looks like a very heavily pre-shaded panel line from a ww2 warbird kit, but, I'm okay with it. That's not the side I have displayed anyway. It was a 2016 camaro curbside kit I got on clearance from Hobby Lobby. I think it was like 6 bucks so no big deal. Tried something new and got bit.

My most recent mishap was when I was building my first model car in over five years and was using Army Painter’s ‘anti-shine’, a flat clear a friend had recommended to me to replace the dullcote I ran out of. I had painted the frame red (revell 29 Ford) and didn’t like it, so I painted it a light blue and rusted it up. When I went to throw the flat clear over it and ended up making it slightly satin and it ruined the whole look. I had used the same clear on the car body with great results. Pretty much no shine. To fix it I sprayed over the frame with a primer, followed by body color (off-white) and then rusted it again. This time I didn’t use clear and I think it looks great.

I was eight years old,for Easter I was given a kit that was an 87 mustang. It wasn't AMT but one of the other common brands , but any way it was warped real bad and in straightening it I broke the roof. Convertible custom. 😔 I've never had an adjustment turn out looking as well as yours did though. It turned out Great!!!😁 I believe it was a Revell kit.

I enjoyed how this build ended up- there are FAR too many pristine show quality models shown in magazines and here on RU-vid. It's very refreshing to see a "daily driver" sort of build such as this!! I'd say keep this build the way it is and if you must... buy another kit and build that one show quality. Perhaps the next build could be a "440" Six Pack?? I saw one that someone had built in 1:1 at a car show this past summer- I can't imagine driving such a beast!!!

I was building a 71 Heavy Chevy Chevelle (would love to see you build one). While painting the seats with a brush (before I realized you could use spray paint) and without realizing it, brush started to fall apart as I was painting. So now my chevelle had white hairy seats. So I went with it. And painted the rest of the seats using the same brush, loosing bristles along the way. Still have the model. Doesn’t look bad considering it was only my second ever build and the first time I ever painted a model even after 30 years since I completed it. I still want a chevelle to build in real life like the model I build, but now the market has priced the working man out. Just started getting back into building models again and either I’ve lost my touch or it’s a product of age and la k of time to sit down and build a model start to finish in one sitting, but I’ve had to really modify the GTO I’m building because of my screw ups. Good thing I started with a dirt track car cause the mistakes can be fudged a little.

I restore classic and antique cars for a living. I've done many mopars of different vintages. All to concours level. Chassis detail: the underside of mopars of this vintage were gray primer with body color over spray at the edges. The rear end assembly was semi gloss black. Fuel and brake lines steel. The rear springs were semi gloss black with steel wraps and u-bolts. Front control arms were bare steel with a cosmoline coating. A light, transparent gold color. Knuckles were bare steel but were darker because of hardening. Torsion bars were gloss black as were the shocks. Strut arms and sway bars were either bare steel or black depending on the plant of manufacture and what shift it was built. (seriously) Transmission is bare steel and the bellhousing would have over spray on the first third of it. Drive shafts were steel or black....again, same reason as the strut arms. If you want to "undercaot" the car, only in the wheel wells and trans tunnel, with a little bit trailing to the back behind the rear wheels. Fuel tanks and exhaust systems were aluminized metal. Drum brake backing plates were black. Hope this helps anyone who wants a "concours" version.....sure, its anal but, I thought I could offer my help if I could. Build on my Amigos!!
@hpiguy
@hpiguy 5 лет назад
That's a lot of info, I'm sure the purists who demand their builds are factory perfect will appreciate it. To clarify, I do kit reviews, which isn't meant to be a perfect concourse job on every model, it's to show how the kit goes together. Paint and detail is a personal choice each builder must make for themselves. Up here in WI, almost half the cars looked black underneath after they got done hosing it down at the dealership with undercoating and oil to prevent rust. LOL Thanks for watching Larry!

@@hpiguy I TOTALLY understand! We all build to our own personal preference. I'm just so used to doing the 1 to 1 scale cars at the "goofy" level that I couldn't help myself :) I really enjoy your videos and I subscribed. But....if anyone wants to, they can use my post as a reference for a concours build.....just wanted to pass it on just in case. I hope I didn't come off as some full of himself know it all, I've just been around these damn cars a lot in my line of work! Keep up the good work and keep building!! I'll be watching!

You asked for it, so here is my story. 1966 Mustang GT350H. Started the project last year, prepped body as usual, primed with TAMIYA fine gray primer, and then went to apply Duplicolor raven black spray bomb. Ended up with casting lines showing up in the doors. Sanded, three more coats of spray bomb, car still had cast marks in the doors! Decided to be quick or be dead, and very quickly wipe off paint with lacquer thinner. It took the paint off, but also melted the body! Looked through my stock, found I had another fastback body, started fresh, tried krylon single stage black, body reacted and this time it was a trip to the purple pond. Stripped paint off, started over, TAMIYA black, but decided to spray the gold stripes on, used Testors pure gold and saw it was too rose color, so I tried using 24k krylon gold, it was too silver. Back to the pond! Stripped again, TAMIYA black and TAMIYA gold. Car looks good now, not perfect, but good. Start cutting and buffing body, and develop a crack at the rear quarter window! I carefully try and panel bond it back together. In the midst of applying MOLOTOW to the vent window and roof rail, the paint reacts and starts to melt my black paint. I pulled the side scoop brake cooler off, walked into the living room where my wife was and said, “watch this!” Crushed body, and broke it into pieces. Decided I would go open another kit and start with now a third body. Go back out to the shop, and saw the first car I started with with the melted body staring me in the face with it half white plastic body stained with black remnant paint and absent body lines. Picked it up and washed it off. Proceed to spend three days profiling the body lines and recreating every seam and body line with a dental pick. I did more body work to this car than any real car I have ever painted in my life! Primer and block body three times and remove all defects and ripples. Finally build a spray booth, yes I’m an idiot! It only took my 40 years to figure out painting outside does not yield good results. Load car and misc body parts in spray booth. Order summit racing ultra jet black acrylic urethane and decide to go back to basics and paint with real car paint. Proceed to lay down the best black single stage paint job I have ever done. The car is now flawless and curing for the past week. I will be gently buffing out two dust specs that got in the paint and then applying some Keith Marks decals, which are the best on the market. The HERTZ will finally be done. Last bit before I end, I started this project last year, and in between this build, I finished a 1966 GT350 convertible, which is a copy of vin 6S2377, and red 1966 GT350 fastback, a 1985 Camaro Z28, and started a 1965 GT350. The GT350H will be done in a few weeks. Sorry for the long read.

Great job as usual. Speaking about the Tamiya panel liner I have noticed that the thin product can seep into the hollow part of the applicator. If a condition happens that allows air to displace the product, like using the brush, it unleashes a huge amount of liner on your kit. If you use a normal brush to apply it you'll be good. Less convenient but how much fun is removing a huge pool of black paint ?

Yup, it holds it like a reservoir but can release it way too fast. And then sometimes it barely trickles out.

I had a similar problem with the Tamiya panel line accents over Tamiya yellow lacquer on a 71 Cuda (Revell). I found that a cotton bud (Q tip) with a little 99% propyl alcohol removed it without damaging the lacquer finish. Alternatively, a light sanding with wet 800 - 1200 or higher grit paper or a micro-mesh polishing cloth removed dried on panel line liquid. Just polish it up with novus 2 then 1 to bring back a sheen to the finish. Appreciate your vids btw

Duster's front turn signals were mounted behind the grill. I painted those in on my kit and was able to use the actual Duster photo on the box to measure the horizontal spacing, vertical was pretty much a crap shoot. This was from an older release, I think the car on the box was red. Yours turned out beautiful, mine was ok.

Hi. Nice job. The most challenging I've done to date is the Boss 302 Mustang because of all the masking for paint and the pinstripe decals. I could not get the driver's side decal to lay down right. Glad it's not a perfect world cause I just left it as is!!!

That was a nice kit, I did a full review on it if you haven't seen it yet. Those side stripes were very thin, I agree. Sometimes it's not worth the frustration and leaving a mistake as is is 100% OK!

I think we’ve all had paint blunders like this before. I actually love this look.As a fella who has owned many real 1:1 cars, this is a time that reflects lots of my past projects. I’ve actually replicated this look. I think it’s realistic and what happens to all of us. Looks great and I vote you leave it as is...

Man I tell ya I was going so well on my 1:24 Plymouth Hemi Cuda had a good bass and primer not too wavy well I applied way too much clear that I needed and it was the model masters small 8 oz cans I was going so well and all of a sudden I started running out mid way painting the body😂 in fact I have one side with clear and the other still has base well I did like you and added primer on that one side and added scuffs and rust patches and acted like a work in progress lol it’s still sitting but I thought of stripping the whole body and re spraying it all clean again

Good job even still. You saved it at least. My recent mishap was a 1/32 scale 1960 thunderbird after I spray painted it, it curdled up in parts and maybe I over covered it but it didn't look good. I don't know how to strip paint so I just sanded it down enough re primered it and painted it's a little better but not perfect. Oh well lesson learned.
@hpiguy

Nice! To strip paint you can soak the body in Super Clean overnight, it works quite well on most paints.

Nice build! I have a Porsche 928 kit that I have stripped and painted 3 times in the last 2 years. The last was metallic silver that came out way too rough. I'm beginning to think it might be the plastic. Someday it will get a good paint job......

That is a sweet kit. I have the older amt/ertl kit in the stash. 57 ford wagon, used 3 different blacks, stripped it 3 times. One more try. Guess the weather and plastic gods cooperated and it looks great. Nice save on this one. Looks like a happy accident
