The Moeller Technique allow us to play multiple strokes with only one motion of our arm. It's a great technique for playing fast, accents and give dynamic to our Blast Beats staying relaxed. Let's break down the motions and learn how to control and speed up this great hands technique!

One of the greatest sources of drum wisdom on RU-vid! Learned so much from you, man!

This teacher is criminally underviewed, I hope he continues to release content and grow an audience. Something about his thinking and presentation is very special, the methodical and systematic approach to identifying weaknesses and isolating them via highly targeted techniques... it's working for me in ways no other teacher has ever done. After 30 years of drumming, I finally understand how to properly hold and strike using German grip. Focusing on fingers 3-5 and isolating the wrist movement is pure genius. Thank you James!

Ive got to say, Ive let your videos play through back to back while working on my business books and receipts. I do this quite often with drum videos cause you can never learn enough. I play metal myself but always playing vids from drummers of all genres. You my friend are very thorough in your vids slowly explaining the mechanics of your video lessons. Not many drummers go this in depth. This is extremely important for those learning to play. Just as a constructive criticism, one thing that would improve your instruction vids are to open and close with playing your actual kit applying the days lesson so your viewers can see it in action. You would attract more potential drummers and subscriptions. Keep up the killer vids my friend!

Love the videos. Been really getting into playing metal the last couple of years. Been practising the techniques for the feet religiously and they have definitely worked. Just starting to work on my hands more now, and these videos have been brilliant also. Top work dude, cheers for the help 🤟👌

Great video, have been experimenting with moeller technique for the last few years for my blast beats, but this video helped clarify some important details for some areas I was having trouble with. Grazie!

Just want to make sure I'm grasping the concept. It seems like the first note is the whipping motion....then are you playing the other 3 notes using your fingers or are you utilizing the rebound like a double stroke?

Wondering about this too...

I was wrong I believe it’s like a double stroke

When u play your four stroke moeller are you using your fingers following the initial stroke all the time or are you able to use pure rebound for those while still keeping the timing even (albeit at the expense of evenness in dynamics)? If so exactly how do you develop control over the timing of the notes based off of rebound?

Does the practice pad make any difference in terms of rebound from strokes ? I am learning moeller technique using a electric drum tom it's softer surface finding it hard progressing . Any tips on pad factor be v appreciated innit
@JamesPayneDrums

It might make a bit of a difference, but the Moeller usually works good also on surfaces that don't have a great rebound because of the arm involvement. Maybe if you have too much rebound you'll have to work more on controlling it

James, your Moeller technique seems a little off...looks more like your using your fingers on the notes following your whip-like downstroke, instead of the tap on the second stroke and third note created by the upstroke of your hand.

This is a joke... you should see me trying to flop my arms around. Talk about not having a knack for it.
