I worked for a louspeaker manufacturer as a younger man ( mid eighties ). He also owned a hifi shop selling quite top end gear. I had a listen to some tracks comparing their average speaker wire with some OFC wire of the same gauge. No snakeoil with OFC.

I bought their Gold series instrument cable for electric guitar several years ago. The difference in picking up interference from my small room packed with electric devices was shocking. It's dead silent! Now I bought silver for microphone. In home studio environment these cables are one time investment and will last for decades.

Awesome detailed look into the Mogami Cable. I personally use a third party Mogami cable with Neutrik connectors. I have a short run [6 feet], and used for live streaming. They are fantastic blocking out all RFI and EMI that is generated by my computer, electronics and power lines.

I'd love to hear the Mogami vs Canare comparison. Science is one thing, but sound is KING.

then do the comparison yourself in person. The videos that compare the sound on RU-vid are absolutely useless for the viewers. RU-vid and all other social media platforms apply their own adjustments to the sound including compression which will eliminate the usefulness of any audio comparison you watch. unless those audio comparisons have a visual component such as a readout from a spectrum analyzer or oscilloscope, they're useless for sound comparisons using your own ears. videos like this one, in which the guy talks about the science and the physics involved are far more useful in determining quality interconnects. The science is real, sound is subjective. I've used both the canare and mogami star quad cables. when you get to the level of mogami and canare starquad, the audible quality is good. They are both at a level in which you cannot tell the difference. Golden ears are not, they are indistinguishable from one another. anyone that says otherwise are either lying or have made that determination based on other factors such as their own prejudice. Nothing about them to complain about. working down the list, you will notice a corresponding change in the quality of the audio. this basically validates that mogami, canare are better than the rest. (not counting the audiophile audiofool brands that are also very high quality produce just as great a sound as these 2 pro cables, but is sell for multiples higher price points and do stupid things like cryogenically freezing their cables or having a shaman smoke a pipe and recite some spell on them to get better sound.. that's all bull...). Belden also has great products.. and I know of quite a few professional studios that wire everything internally (in walls, floors and ceilings) with Belden cables and use mogami to connect their equipment and instruments at studio level.. Canares are most popular with musicians that bring their own cables.. I always go with Mogami personally.. I think the spiral shield is far more resilient to external forces. a braided shield is strong and provides arguably the most protection from RF than a spiral shield, but the rigidity of the cable means that every single time you coil it, you are creating more stress on the assembly.. a spiral cable has more give when coiled. using the over-under method in wrapping your cables is probably the least talked about strategy in maintaining the structure of a cable. I knew a guy that would interview job seekers for his pro audio company.. he would give them an XLR cable and ask them to coil it up. If they didn't know how to do it using the over/under method, they wouldn't get the job. anyone that acknowledges the importance of cables in the signal chain should do themselves a favor and learn the over-under method if they don't already know it..

My guess - Mogami mostly like forewent the cotton buffer in the 5234 studio cable because it is just that, studio cable. I used this stuff for installs on anything fixed such as the monitors. Anything that moved, such as booms or XLR/1/4 leads for mic/instrument placement i would usually use the mogami 2552. It is more flexible and built to be more rugged than the 5234.

No mention of the Mogami platinum xlr. Why? Do you consider the platinum cost prohibitive? Is there no scenario where you would choose the platinum over the gold? Are the specs of the platinum better than that of the gold?
@raymondchan3587
@raymondchan3587 2 года назад
No, actually you can DIY a Mogami 2534 with Neutrik connectors with a lot less than the factory terminated one. I would say, they were performing equally good if you soldered them properly .

Hi there! Due to the configuration of the space where my home studio is, either I need to move my laptop closer to the recording booth or I need a 50 feet cable to keep my computer at the same place, so, with the second option, do you think that I’m losing a lot of high frequencies with this length or nothing at all? It’d be helpful to know because I didn’t knew you can loose high frequencies with long cables Thank you in advance

Hello Sir, Is Mogami Gold XLR-3 foot cable best for shure sm7b and zoom H5 ?
@jazzdad52

Great explanation! One question from a real newbie, I see one pin is the ground, is the body also grounded? I have a peavey mic that isn’t real snug on the cable, when it jiggles, sound goes in and out. Looking in the socket, there is a small metal tab in the bottom, that lines up with the metal case of the plug where the metal is slightly enlarged. I thought that was the ground, and that it was disconnecting because the plug wiggles in the socket. I also have a device that plugs in as a mic does ( wireless mic receiver) that has a copper strip on the side of the socket, with a small hole to catch the clip on the plug. Same problem, jiggles, connection in and out. Again, socket seems worn, I wanted to bend the contact out a bit to tighten it, but couldn’t. (The cable works ok with other devices.) So, obviously I should throw out the defective mic, but it still raises the question, just for my curiosity, is the metal body of the plug needed as a ground, since the ground has its own separate pin?
@houndawg3
@houndawg3 Год назад
The body can be grounded by splitting the shield and soldering it to the body ground tab, but it's not a common practice. You'll see in the video that that hasn't been done by Mogami. Most audio guys want the ground inside the equipment, not on the outside. Your problem is likely caused by cheap XLR connectors. Get a good cable with Neutrik connectors or build your own. Neutriks fit in mics better and aren't cheaply made.

I’m considering replacing my cheap Amazon basic mic cables with different colored Canare cables because of the reasons you mentioned. I have amps and power outlet strips, and other cables snaking all around and all over the floor and since I’ve started being more particular about the sound of what I record in my home studio I’ve been noticing unwanted low and high humming noise sometimes. I’m pretty sure it’s caused by using the cheap Amazon cables. Thanks for making these great explanatory and very informative videos! Might I suggest the same type of video but with instrument cables? 😎🎸😎

nope best features would be and yes Oxygen free copper is one of them. the other is individual wires being shielded as well not slapped together with a single shielding!! next a Teflon wrap around the shielding, also Carbon fiber strands to fill those areas would help lubricate from friction on the inside of the cable while also removes any possible source of Static electricity, last the wire strands them selves being Silver plated, now a cable made like this would be top of the line with all the features and trimmy's one could possibly want!!!

I'm a little disappointed. Your claim that the Mogami was "Top of the line" seems based on the ad copy on the package. No testing of their claims? No spectrum analysis? I'd like to see data about line length/capacitance/high freq roll off. I think you've done that in a couple other videos.
