If Mojang wants to nerf mending it first needs to change the anvil use system so that repairing an item at an anvil can be done infinitely

Exactly, balancing other options for travel should be on improving the others instead of just nerfing things down. If rails aren’t fast as elytra, give them a means to be faster with new technologies. If horses aren’t useful, add breeding mechanics that can help you select to make them faster, or domestication options so you can ride all sorts of large animals to use them as mounts. Imagine bear mounts based on using potions.

They are not nerfing it, they are making it less accesible, mending is S tier enchantment so it makes sense that it will be so rare to get, for me at least. If you actually require mending for your builds, you are probably full netherite with an elytra anyway and getting the mending book in that case is not hard at all. EDIT: I agree with the rest that repairing on anvil is really bad though
@HenrikMyrhaug
@HenrikMyrhaug 8 месяцев назад
ABSOLUTELY! It is so stupid that an item becomes too expensive to repair after enchanting it, making mending 100% essential for anyone who wants to keep using good tools. Right now, the only options are either to spend lots of time gathering resources for crafting and enchanting new tools every time they break, or to spend 3 minutes to get a mending book from a villager. If enchanted items could be easily repaired, then mending wouldn't be so essential, and would become the late game enchantment it was meant to be, without making the game incredibly grindy.
@handy_jack118

mojang needs to learn that making items grindier to get is not making the game harder , like netherite for example . its not harder to get its just more tedious . now with villagers , the game isn't made harder , its just made more tedious . these are very hard turn offs that make me wanna stop playing minecraft

Agreed. The game progression and gameplay needs to be harder, not the obtaining of netherite and enchants. Someone made a video using Terreria as an example of a game that creates harder enemies once you have higher levels ir whatever it was. I think it would be cool if there were mobs that spawn (different depend on the biome) when a player with netherite gear is near as if they're attracted to it, maybe want to feed on it whatever. It would be kind of cool to implement features like that. Maybe special mobs that only stay in the sky so they'll only attack you if you're flying with an elytra (but only one at a time seeing how much people hate phantoms).

Mending is THE only way to actually repair your items without an unnecessary and tedious grind to get the gear you wanted and already had. I lost my enchanted Diamond pants to a blaze when I dropped them on accident. Because nerfing mending needs a lot more code work, like the villager trade rebalance, they already have a vision for it. For an anvil overhaul they either just need to adjust the values or an entirely different solution no one has come up with yet. The answer is either so obvious it doesn't need an experimental update or so vague they need to sit with it for a little bit. Also those two things are very separate, yet related, problems that should be addressed separately. The anvil/enchanting issues are a problem with the core enchantment issues being unintuitive and needs an overhaul with the entire system. Villager trade is overpowered and it doesn't just relate to the enchanting trades but also armor and food. All we're saying with criticism like this is that we as a community want an enchanting update first before a villager trade update and I don't think postponing content that is already in the works over something that is not planned yet is a very good idea.

@humourlessjester3584
@humourlessjester3584 7 месяцев назад
@@dylandepetro4187 I don't really agree. The true sandbox game is in creative mode. Survival minecraft is a little bit of both, where you can do everything in the game but the value has to be equal to the grind you put in. Currently the mending grind system is disproportionate to the reward. The reason why people prefer survival over creative it's because the house you built, for example, is made from hours of mining and placing blocks. Armor can now be akin to building due to the armor trims. Insurvival minecraft the grind needs to be equal to the reward. On top of that a true sandbox/creative mode is not for the extrinsically motivated and so the game just becomes boring for someone of that player type, and given that ADHD cases are on the rise as of late we get more extrinsically motivated kids playing than ever before. Infinite armor sets for breaking a lectern several times is not an equal exchange, and it needs to be adjusted because we take our armor too much for granted and therefore lose our value of it as intrinsic players, and it makes the gameplay loop boring extrinsic players by stopping the need to do anything after getting fully geared.

@@humourlessjester3584 yes. But not everyone breaks the lectern. Me, I place maybe three or four lecterns, and whatever enchantments I get, I get. Plus I mostly use the librarians for glass, lanterns, and bookshelves. I guess if they have a fortune or fire aspect enchantment I’ll get it, but that is about it. Also, having to breed villagers in a swamp to get mending makes more easily obtainable than if they just made it that once a villager links to a work station, that is it, their trades are set in stone and unchangable.

Mojang should not nerf mending. In my experience with gaming, it rarely goes over well to nerf popular mechanics like that, especially when you've left it in the game for that long. The answer instead is to add more enchantments that are mutually exclusive with mending but still offer valuable bonuses. Most people prefer mending to infinity on their bows, but there is still value in picking infinity that you can't get from mending and there will always be players that go that route. What we need are viable alternatives to mending that give players a reason not to use it on every piece of armor and equipment.

Mojang inadvertently struck gold when it came to getting elytra. The first one takes a ton of work to get but once you have one the next one is orders of magnitude easier. They seemed to copy this format with the templates and people seem ok with how hard is it to find them. Even though some are extremely difficult. All they need to do is replicate this with enchanting books. That way you can lock really good enchantments inside long side quest or rare structures but once you have one you can make more. You could just copy the duplication method with templates or a better solution would be to allow players to teach max level villagers how to create more of an item you already have (relative to their profession).
@Cathowl
@Cathowl 8 месяцев назад

So this could be a really cool implementation. The librarians need to be taught in some way how to make/provide the specific book. Say you need to bring a sample and they can than provide it but at a lower level. the more repeated samples allow for higher levels. You could also require a lower level be used as part of the trade instead of a blank book similarly to combing in an anvil it just doesn't increase the worked count of the book. Force the use of lapis as the only way to get some of the lower level books and increase the lapis cost at the table
@zeppie_
@zeppie_ 8 месяцев назад
I really like this idea for an enchanting rework. Locking enchantment progression behind exploration creates a really natural and fun dynamic, similar to armor trims. Perhaps using lecterns or chiselled bookshelves with enchanted books in the place of bookshelves at an enchanting table adds those enchantments to the pool of possible enchantments, which is otherwise empty. This way, you could tailor-make enchanting setups for your gear, or get high-level books of a specific enchantment by just placing one. Ordinary bookshelves would still function to give the player better quality enchantments. The same mechanic could apply to librarian villagers, who will need a lectern with the right enchanted book in it to unlock that same book as high-level trade.

The problem with nerfing the availability of Mending is that Mending isn't a problem, nor is it overpowered. It's the only solution people have for the problem of endgame gear wearing out, and wearing out far too quickly if you're gathering materials for large-scale building projects or trying to excavate a large area underground. And I use the word "large" very generously; a netherite pick with Unbreaking III is going to wear out long before you finish excavating even a single chunk from surface level down to bedrock, even on a 1.16 world where bedrock is still at y=0. Trying to carve out a nether highway? HA! No, Mending is a basic requirement for any piece of gear which you want to last. What's worse, they tried to sell the nerf to us as making it _easier_ to get your needed enchantments. And then instead, they took all the enchantments that people actually need to use Librarians for in the first place and intentionally buried them behind the most extreme tedium and pain in the ass that they possibly could. They advertised one thing while actually doing the opposite. If they feel the need to do that, then they have no excuse. They _know_ what's wrong with what they're doing. They _know_ the players won't like it, and they're doing it anyways. Why? To what benefit? Who knows, but it's not to ours.

I think the actual main issue is the fact that there mending is incredibly easy to get, and adds a way to make your tools lifespans infinite, and no other mechanic does anything comparable. If tools for instance were infinitely repairable, then mending would be much less essential, and making it rarer wouldn't be such a big deal. I personally think mending belongs to the endgame, and love that Mojang are moving it there, but hate the fact that they are leaving a huge void in the mid and late game where no comparable mechanic exists. There should exist some way for you to keep your tools throughout the mid/ late game, and infinite/ much cheaper repairing is just such a common sense feature.

Red Nether Brick is zero fun to make. I made the mistake of wanting to build my latest mega-build (life-size Temple of Artemis) out of Quartz with a Red Nether Brick tile roof, and the resource gathering for both was a huge grind. I ended up making a Nether Wart farm next to my project so that I could grow it as I was building due to just how much that I needed. On the topic of Game Balance, I think that the biggest issue is that the Minecraft technical community is so good at dissecting game mechanics, reducing them down to their essential parts, then making farms that use those mechanics in the most efficient way independent of how Mojang intended for the mechanic to be used. This efficiency gain completely breaks the overall game in some instances, so Mojang has to look at how people are abusing mechanics and then either decide that there is sufficient work involved in creating the farm that the efficiency increase is warranted (such as Iron Farms, Raid Farms, Mob Farms, etc.) or they change the mechanics to nerf that efficiency increase or blow up the farm concept entirely (zero-tick farms, AFK Fishing, etc) or make the farm much more difficult to build in order to make it more late-game and/or make the reward commensurate with the work involved (which is where Villager Trading seems to be heading). What Mojang needs to realize is that it is really easy to push a mechanic to be as good as possible when it is released because game designers want their mechanics to be used, but it is also really easy to nerf things too hard in order to make players play "as intended". Players are never going to play 100% "as intended" and players will always be able to go to any length to get the best armor, weapons, tools, etc. or to gather resources in the most efficient way. I think that the tipping point is that once the hoops necessary to jump through to use a mechanic are no longer worth jumping through because the end result is not worth it, the nerf is too much. I think that this is where the experimental Villager Trading currently stands. They either need to make the current rewards require more effort OR making you get less for the current effort, they can't do both (especially to the degree that that are currently proposing with Villager Trading).

I would agree with most of what you said, except for one thing: Raid farms are waaay too OP for how little effort they take to make. You can easily build ianxofour's raid farm in an hour after just a couple days of playing, requiring just a few basic materials. But you get a basically unlimited amount of emeralds, redstone, totems of undying and glowstone in a short period of AFKing the farm. Iron Farms are also very easy to make, again, look at ianxofour's first day iron farm, which can be built after just half an hour into a completely new world. It is not super fast, but will still yield a decent amount of iron if you put it near your base, so that it is always running in the background. Faster iron farms aren't too hard to build either. However, I am okay with iron farms as they are, as iron (contrary to emeralds and totems) is not really scarce anyway and also is required in huge amounts if you plan to build more and bigger farms.

I actually grew to love the combat update. I think it’s unfair for the player to be able to spam attacks while a mob can only hit once in a while. Also, the use of the shield mechanic adds more of a cinematic feel to combat as a whole. Though I can see how PvP is a bit on the iffy side (overusing the shield), for the single player experience, it’s perfect. In my opinion, it actually makes you think on how to approach certain mobs with fast or projectile based attacks.

The problem with the villager nerfs is that it invalidates various play styles and challenge maps as well as missing the point as to why people spend the time and effort investing in a trading hall in the first place: 1) The basic enchanting system is not fun, the randomness of the system, the xp costs and the fact that treasure enchantments still require players to trade/fish/get lucky looting, actively pushes players to trade with librarians which give access to every enchantment, are slow to setup but quick for future enchantments and provide experience are objectively better. The Librarian nerf does not make the enchanting system better, it just highlights the flaws. 2) For some players, going diamond mining in deepslate is not fun either, deepslate is frustratingly slow to mine (even with haste 2 and efficiency 5) and caves are now large enough the the danger they present is a turn off. Armorer, tool smiths and weapon smiths all provided an alternative way to get the equipment. 3) Forcing players to travel further to engage with villagers is problematic for multiple reasons - moving large distances is not enjoyable, horses are too random in their stats (and breeding difficult to understand and engage with) as well as stoped by large changes in elevation, rivers and oceans, boats are great on water but useless on land, camels require a specific biome and are fairly slow and minecarts require too many resources and are not fast enough. Travel also has technical issues, travelling can quickly lead to excessive world file sizes, lag on servers, and may be inpossible with worlds with a smaller world border. It also makes transporting items a bigger issue given the limited inventory size. Fundamentally, villagers are very powerful and impact many other minecraft game systems but Mojang really need to address the other systems first before they nerf villagers. •Overhaul the enchanting system entirely with an emphasis on rewarding players for taking the time to setup and make randomness less of factor and make anvil repairing a viable alternative to mending. I personally like the idea of adding enchanted book to the chiseled bookshelves - a lightning rod could channel lightning into an enchanting table to enable treasure enchantments too. •Fix the inventory system and make storage systems easier for the average player to build and maintain. •Make transortation alternatives to the elytra viable, horse breeding could be one avenue to explore in this regard and minecarts could be focused on fun rollercoaster type builds. Ultimately, I feel the reason I and many others are upset about the experimental changes is that Mojang are doing everything they can to avoid calling it a nerf, are missing the reason why many players choose to use villagers over other systems and are closing the door to various play styles and experiences. I appreciate that a game as large as Minecraft is hard to update and balance but for a game that has always been about creative freedom of expression, these changes do a lot to shut that down, not celebrate it.

I agree with almost everything here, except the whole "overpowered" thing. The absolute best balance is giving players options on a power scale that they can choose. If I want to challenge myself, I can use the least powerful items. If I want to forget a hard day of work and just feel rewarded, I can use the most powerful items (or, just more powerful items). The exact reason why after 9 years of release I decided to buy and play Minecraft was because I watched a streamer use the Elytra with a rocket. Walking, sprinting, minecarts, etc. made sense when the game was 256x256. It never took long to get to where you wanted to go. After the worlds became infinite, and there was good reason to go explore 10k-100k blocks from home, even the Elytra seems slow. @higueraft571 Nerfing the severely overpowered items in the gear department I dont think would really be a big deal since netherite was just an extra layer of powercreep for the endgame player, but for stuff like nerfing mending it should definitely be accompanied by removing the stupid anvil repair cost mechanic, or nerfing the elytra while buffing minecarts to provide you the best transport method but only if you take the time to set up the infastructure. Right now the endgame in minecraft (which can be reached from 1 hour to several weeks) invalidates any need to ever make any use of any and all transport but an elytra paired with a gunpowder farm which is completely broken. I understand that it is an endgame item and allowing people choice is a thing but providing a player with a clearly overpowered toolset with a stupidly easy method of obtainment and saying "its your choice" doesnt really apply because people will choose it, moreso in multiplayer because why would you waste your time just playing the game in a worse setup while all your friends can do more than you in less time than you? Its a p noticable problem when servers have tp literally ban the end and other endgame content just so the game doesnt become a snoozefest. I do think however the current villager nerfs are garbage. The cure nerf is very understandable but the higher cost investment for worse trades esp in the enchanting department just ruin the experience, especially when to get items like mending you have to drag villagers thousands of blocks to a biome they cant spawn in naturally make them breed and then pray to get mending at a decent price. I like minecraft's sandbox nature but considering how specific the new features and mobs get with their mechanics it especially leaves the progression feeling lazy now. I dont mind endgame gear that can obliterate the game if it was hard to get instead of digging through deepslate and netherrack then grabbing a single smithing template from a bastion to dupe with your diamonds.

I agree that minecarts suck, nerfing the elytra could be something as simple as slightly lowering the max speed you can reach with fireworks alone, and minecarts are due for a serious buff. Ideally powered rail should use copper not gold, and we should be able to have maybe a small burst of speed on powered rails, but continuing on them could allow a fairly slow but steady acceleration. Then the midgame starts when you breach the nether. This domain is much more hostile to you. It wants you dead. This is when most players start enchanting their gear, plan out their transport paths, and start construction on their main base. Then there is late game, which i define by accessing the outer end. Now that you can fly, priorities shift, and transporting both people and items is buffed massively. I think of mounts as a tier 1 transport and elytras as tier 3. Minecarts are also tier 1. What minecraft development seems to be missing is a lack of coherent vision and it has felt that way since 2014 when Notch left the team. This issue where different developers make different updates that screw up mechanics like mending shouldn’t and generally don’t happen in most other studios. This more shows that the Minecraft team needs to build out a more long term plan and stick to it while also revisiting and taking into account its old features. While mending is a common complaint, I for one don’t see it as nearly as big of an issue as a general casual player. What annoys me is how did we have a village update and the villages still break the terrain generation. Why did they say they were planning on updating the birch forests and never did it. People for years have been pleading with Mojang to make structures like dessert and Jungle temples more interesting, but instead they decided to completely overhaul combat or add in things like archeology. These are the kinds of things that show me Mojang is a directionless mess and just add things as they please. Mojang shouldn’t be adding more mechanics until they make a roadmap to how they add things in a meaningful way while also updating and revamping old stuff that has been left to rot.

Take the nether for example, in there you'll have to deal with fire on the ground, lava and fire from ghasts, you'll only have to deal with ghast explosions, while projectiles only defends from skeletons and piglins. But protection provides damage resist to all of those plus melee piglins, brutes, wither skeles, slime, zombies, blazes ect.... My solution? Remove protection, reduce the percentage slightly on the other enchants and allow 2 enchants simultaneously while also adding more situations where specific protections could be more useful

For example, if Warden is summoned, you have to wait about 3 minutes. If you enchant things, you have to wait before a mob farm because it requires 30. Why does it require specific levels and is the highest 30? I was always wondering.
@michaelstriker8698

Highest enchanting level is 30, and it was implemented on a teired basis. 30 levels and 30 bookshelves for best enchants. Plus 4 obsidian block, 5 diamonds (3 for the pick), and extra book. Grinding 30 levels without a mob farm was annoying the first time and onerous afterward. Even with a mob farm, getting full idestructible and the best armor/weapon enchants took a while, due to randomness. Villag

They "update" this, meanwhile bedrock edition still loads dimensions before it actually loads the camera and player controls so you get ghast fireballed while you're stuck in the loading screen. Why does the seemingly main way you want people playing fundamentally suck in such a basic way? Like, how many brain cells does it take to figure out you need the player and camera loaded *before* hostile mobs? And was that decided by the same person designing the villager adjustments?

Alot of the "over powered." Things in minecraft are things you need to work for The villager trades could be made cheap, but you need multiple weakness potions and golden apples. Which means you need to either mine aton of gold. Or figure out how to farm it. Which takes alot of work to do

Nerfing is such a terrible method of balance. If you have something in the game, that's fun, why would you want to remove the fun by making it less good? If something in the game is seen as "overpowered" they should just make other things better or add new things that are more fun instead of ruining the existing things

It can give time for other mechanics to shine. For example, nerfing the Elytra could make Minecarts and Horses more useful in comparison. Unfortunately for Mending, the only competition to it is anvil repairing, which is awful.
@higueraft571
@higueraft571 8 месяцев назад
@@miimiiandco.8721 Horses still have a use even with Elytra as-is, Minecarts absolutely do not even if you REMOVE Elytra entirely. You would have to nerf boats, horses, elytra, and such to such a degree they're worthless. Horses you need on infrastructure for, and it's easier to set up. Elytra is self-explanatory, though you need Mending and Fireworks first. Boat Highways are incredibly effective, but they require more setup in exchange for THE fastest method of travel in the game. Minecarts involve lots of tedious setup, cost a shitload, and are incredibly slow in exchange for you not needing to press a button.

@pout6038
@pout6038 8 месяцев назад
eh... i agree in some ways, but in others it does actively hurt the game to just buff everything. It's not a good option. nerfing villagers for example only hurts the game now because the game lacks the mechanics to support these changes. The changes could actually be a positive if they add other ways of transportation, add more villager types (so there's one for every biome instead of just the current villages + only 2 that don't have villages), make anvils actually good, etc. an elytra/firework nerf could also be good, but then they have to make other methods of transportation and buff existing ones, as nerfing the elytra solves nothing if the minecart is still really bad. And it'd make trident with riptide much more useful. Especially if they also added some way to change weather in survival. you need both buffs to some features and nerfs to others to make it work, as just nerfing stuff makes the game less fun.

Mending is not overpowered. Just make an alternative enchantment that prevents the tool/item from disappearing at zero durability (call it "Enduring"). And get rid of anvil penalty all together. Allow netherite gear to be repaired with diamonds. Ask yourself if XP limit per chunk is a good idea. That is functionally equivalent to getting rid of mending. Ask yourself if old-worlds and mega-project should REQUIRE continued world generation and growing the world size. Renewability is a good feature, not a bug or exploit.

issue with XP limit per chunk would be the fact that if you make it too low, people would have to spend an inordinate amount of time just, walking to new places. not 'exploring' but just zoning out a section of chunks to drain the XP from and then move on.

i love the mending enchantment. you see, it lets you break the grind loop and focus on making builds & farms instead of wasting a couple diamonds and levels to fix your tool just so you can do it again within the next 2 days. You have to worry about your remaining diamonds/netherite, your iron, you need to waste exp, etc. with mending, you can just stand in your exp farm (assuming you have one) for like 10 minutes and it's done. even if you DON'T have an exp farm, you can just go to the nether, hit a zombie piglin, pillar up 2 blocks and you're good. mending doesn't make the game "easier" in any capacity, it just alleviates the grind.

I think they need to deal with the fact that the vast majority of people play Minecraft as a casual survival game either solo or cooperatively with friends. Most players are not concerned with minor game balancing tweaks or the fact that certain items are overpowered. It can feel like a slap in the face to have these updates thrust upon you that, in a solo world, do nothing but make you have to do more mindless grinding for something that from your perspective is affecting no one besides yourself. It essentially just becomes an anti-quality-of-life update. If you're playing PvP or are on a large server, sure, I can see some need for balancing. Being able to hold a stack of 64 healing potions could definitely be overpowered in a PvP match. But on the other hand, for a casual solo player, it only feels like an annoyance to have a non-stackable item cluttering your inventory while you're gathering resources.

For instance, the elytra: me and my friends don’t really care about beating the game other than to just kill the dragon and none of us like playing on easy or peaceful. We also often base within a hundred blocks of each other and build big community areas like one mine we all share and dig together so we never use or need elytra because it’s just not worth the hassle. Another example would be super flat, of course not everyone plays super flat but the people who do would have a terrible time without the ability to get certain types of villagers or certain enchantments to make a long term game even worth it.

@Kamorzy
@Kamorzy 8 месяцев назад
I think the key is the its not just about balance between similar options, its also the time, effort, and opportunity cost to picking one option over another. Like yeah, boats on ice highways are way better than horses, but it takes a ton of effort to set that up compared to horses that just work as soon as they're tamed. That's what balances it. And some potions are better than others, but using one potion doesn't negate you from using a different one. They don't compete that way. And Elytra are better than all the other options, but at least it is locked at the very end of the game, so it requires the full game's progression to get it (albeit, minecraft does have a fairly shallow progression and Elytra are waayyyy stronger that the effort to get them validates). It ties in with the overall pace of the game's progression. Even if players don't appreciate it often, a shallow progression system that burns out really quickly does hurt a game. Auto-fishing was nerfed bc you could get powerful, end-game items basically Day 0 with a cheap afk fishing setup. netherite was nerfed bc you could easily rush for Diamond, then go to the Nether and just go down and mine all the netherite you need, quickly maxing out your gear before even exploring at all, with little to no risk. Traders are nerfed bc once you find just a single village, every other village in the world becomes worthless, and you also get infinite diamond gear, any enchanting book you want, infinite supply of the best food in the game, and many other blocks/items after setting up any early game farm you can trade for emeralds. Mining for diamonds + lapis, and building an enchanting table was totally obsolete and unnecessary. They all burned the game's progression out really early and give you what's supposed to be "end-game content" within the first few days in every new world. While I don't like the idea of working more, it was always clearly ridiculous how almost all the "rare" items in a world were so worthless, bc there were always easier, faster, and more reliable ways to get it all. However, mending has somewhat of a pass imo, bc there is actually no alternative. The repair mechanic still requires that you replace you tool after too much use, it doesn't do what mending does - give a way to retain a tool forever. The repair mechanic is more like an alternative to the unbreaking mechanic. It delays the discarding of tools, but doesn't prevent it like mending does. If they overhaul the repair mechanic so it can reasonably make tools last forever, then I think it'd be understandable to nerf mending.
