Mojave Desert Drive! California 58: Bakersfield to Barstow

This drive takes you across the Mojave desert, from Bakersfield, through Kramer Junction, to Barstow on California Highway 58.

I made this trip in June 2018. Video shot with a Brinno TLC-200 Pro time-lapse camera mounted on my roof with a homemade magnetic case. I travel with two Brinno cameras - one facing forward, the other in reverse. Sometimes the reverse camera captures better video (fewer raindrops and bugs hit the rear-view lens).

i love that highway. california is one beautiful state. it's amazing that when you get less than 100 miles inland from the ocean, how unpopulated the countryside actually is. The old El Camino Real is really beautiful too. i really didn't care too much for being a truck driver, but whenever i got to drive California (outside of the cities), it made me a happy man. This footage brings back a lot of memories.

is it better to drive it at night because of the heat or is day time okay?

@@joesouza9050 as far as being a truck driver, i could do either and did both (drove team most of the time). but being awake in the day one day and 2 days later being awake at night (over and over again) could really make a person groggy and lethargic. Being a truck driver, you really don't get to choose your hours, they choose you and you have to go when you can.

This highway is very peaceful at night. Its hard to believe that Greater Los Angeles is a few miles to the south. At night all you see are the lights from Edwards AFB.

Im a new yorker and this video is giving me peace. This is all I want to do, hit the open road like this with my music on enjoying the drive. Cant really do that in this city.

I know (most of) that road like the back of my hand. The terrain is simultaneously tranquil and threatening.... Beautiful, but so hostile to most life you can't help but feel a bit intimidated. Think about the original settlers, and what they had to go through.

I've done this route several times (I live in Texas). The last time was a couple of years ago when all east bound traffic was stopped at Tehachapi (around 7:15) due to a mud slide that block the road between Tehachapi between Mojave. I had to backtrack to Bakersfield go north on 178 to Lake Isabella cross over to 14 then south to Mojave. The highway is fine except for the undivided highway two lane section.

I drive between Fairfield and Las Vegas every year. Part of my route takes me on this very stretch of road, as I take CA 99 down to Bakersfield and the CA 58 on to Barstow, where that then turns into I-15, which takes you straight to Vegas. Nice to know they're turning 58 at Kramer knot a bypass. Absolutely fucking nightmare to pass through there during the summer. I'm making this trip in August. Always love the drive!

Once the new 4 lane highway at Kramer Junction is completed and opened to traffic, it will be a lot smoother in that area.

Real good video, nice pace not like some of these ridiculously "fast/elapsed" shows that we can't even appreciate the landscape, so kudos to ya!!!

Yes your right but they made a a new and improved 58 freeway bridge that goes over the 395 and the train tracks

CA. sure likes multi-lane highways in the middle of no-where, where there are low traffic counts. Nice video!

It may LOOK like you're in the middle of no-where UNTIL you get to the two lane highway section. It ain't multi-lane far enough! The max truck speed limit I seem to recall is about 10-15 mph lower than cars, and it ain't long before the build up and stack up begins. There are a lot of trucks on that route headed for I-40. I just dred that section of the highway.

It's been 2 years but from my opinion this route is just a burp and a hiccup from an interstate. I recommend I-42. What say you?

Usually from my past experiences it takes about 2 or 2 1/2 hours or so.

About a couple of hours. Maybe a little more with the traffic at Kramer Junction.

90 min to 2 hours or so. Depending on traffic and whether or not you hit a train just before Kramer. Generally its 3.5-5hours from Bakersfield to Vegas, and CA-58 to Barstow comprises the first half of that journey. The other half is on I-15

That also depends on how fast you drive as well.
