Well, I JUST discovered this by accident. Proud owner of a Hammond XK-Pro system, I have always been interested in where the 'Champs' of the NEW Hammond are. First Joey setting out with KeyB, and now Tony with Crumar...........WOW, how things change and move along... These clones are all OK, but why have these when you can have what has become the natural progression of the REAL Hammond Organ ??? Well, I guess having competition is good for business. Since 1967, I'm sticking with the 'H'

Excellent both the Mojo and Tony! I'm guessing the Mojo is a specialist computer in a box, hence why it "needs to warm up" - anyway who cares. What I like a lot is the ability to 1. use different organ models and 2. upload my own! The Nord does not do that. From what I've learnt, the tonewheels all sound different, my 1961 does not sound like these (good or bad) but the Mojo allows me to upload mine!?

Sounds great. Although I can still hear a little rawness and bite in the Hammond. The Curmar sounds very close. I notice you have to change the bass settings on the Crumar but not on the Hammond. That leads me to believe the Hammond is a little more ballsy or beefier than the Crumar.

Just think, this guy USED to endorse the huge Hammond Suzuki corp.... That says a lot! I love VB3, but I wish Crummar would make a Mojo option that's more traditional in layout (i.e., the presests beside the corresponding manual, perc. And vibrato/chorus buttons beside the drawbars, and maybe the extra features on the left cheekblocks to give it the right length for playing with my 25 note pedalboard. Etc). If the buttons were in the sides the tip portion would be more apt for placing a monitor or a Muse Receptor module. I hope the future holds something close.
@mrdali67
@mrdali67 7 лет назад
They did produce the Hammichord, but it was discontinued, don't know why. The Hammichord have the black preset keys and almost same layout as a B3. Not sure if the pc hardware was the same but it was also the VB3 engine. Question is if you can buy a 2'nd hand hammichord and update the firmware to same version as the latest Mojo version.

The MOJO sounds great. Seems a little in the lower- mid (body section) of the organ tone still not quite there but goodness, clone wheels have come a long way. The only issue for me was the smaller version had the drawbars actually coming over the keys and with sloppy smears could create a problem but I have to say the Crumar rocks and great demoing. Always been a fan of your playing and demeanour. Sold! :)

That's pretty darn cool. Maybe why there are so many large used Hammond organ's for sale right now? Only thing I hear is a little more punch, fullness, and tightness in the attack on the real Hammond. So close though. Nice comparison.

does anyone know if Crumar is planning on releasing a larger pedal board than the 13-note MojoPedals? Everything else about the Mojo sounds amazing, but 13 bass notes seems like nothing...a 20+ note pedal board with this organ would be unstoppable!

Hello Tony; As a great fan i am of Jimmy Smith, I am also a great fan of your playing and more than that respecting his way of playing the organ,and I really enjoy your videos too. I played for years a Roland VK7 and now a Nordstage ,but i was never 100% happy with the organ sound. I am now going to buy a Mojo.. I am wondering if excepting additionnal E piano sounds that seem to sound great, could I download an accoustic classic piano sound, witch I could expect for that price!?? Excuse my poor english cause i am French! And keep on swinging for sure!
@lqr824
@lqr824 11 лет назад
I was hoping the clone would do it, but every time the Hammond sounded a bit tougher: a bit rougher on the attack AND release, and in between a bit dirtier or more distorted. I'm using a high-end combo of Krell 400xi amp and B&W 805 Signature speakers, that may let me hear the vid better than I could on cheaper setups.. I actually want either a B3/A100 or a digital sim, and hoped the Mojo would be a candidate. I also write synth simulation software so really wanted the sim to win...

I hear the difference. I have an A100.... but here’s the thing. While I do hear the difference, I don’t think it’s significant enough to worry about if you’re gigging and you are not Jon Lord or Keith Emerson. The actual tonewheel Hammond organ sound is definitely thicker. But for $2500, without having to rent a van in order to haul 700 pounds of wood/steel between the organ and the Leslie? It’s a no-brainer. It is, as the saying goes, close enough for Jazz. Were I still gigging I’d get one of these in a heartbeat.

Wakeman for many years didn’t use a Hammond, preferring instead to utilize the organ patches on his synths. I’ve got multiple vids of him doing that. He did, however, keep using his Minimoogs.

Love my Hammond organs, even my X-66, but some of us are feeling left out in the modeling game with our Wurlitzer,Gulbransen,Conn, Rodgers, Thomas, etc. There are a few great organs you can sit down at and know they need modeled. The Wurlitzer 4600 ( see NSHOS Wurlitzer 4600) has so much great electromechanical tone. I play the spinet version- 4410 daily. It sounds very rich & full, and has so much ensemble. It shares these attributes with Hammond. Plus the Wurlitzer can get strings & reed too.

Absolutely eye giggling this or the GSI DMC with the Gemini.Problem with the Mojo is that it runs on Windows XP embedded. This may only be supported a few more years? What does everyone else think?
@michaelbauers8800
@michaelbauers8800 7 лет назад
Just been checking this out, out of curiosity having run into it somewhere. And I only know that it runs some sort of embedded version of VB3. And reading your question, I have to ask this - doesn't all hardware have same issue, in a sense? If the company stops supporting the software, then there's no more support. I presume they can use the embedded Win XP until the end of time in the hardware they run. They probably require zero support from Windows for the version of XP. So the only support issue is if Crumar and/or the VB3 developers stop updating the software. But that's true of all hardware, as I say. My Prophet 12 is probably now set in stone. As is probably true of my Waldorf Blofeld. And for all I know even my Access Virus is now end of life in terms of software.
@mrdali67
@mrdali67 7 лет назад
It really aint a problem. It's an embedded system and it only has to run the VB3 software. It doesn't have to comunicate with the outer world. it can't be hacked etc... It will run for as long as the hardware works, and you could propably change the inside motherboard with another if it should break at some point. its a standard x86 mb with a usb soundcard. At some point the Mojo will be discontinued like all other keyboards and you wont get any more updates of the VB3 Software. But that wont hurt the instrument as long as it doesn't break. You actually have a better case with the Mojo the day it breaks and Crumar won't support it, as its software based, and just about every 1 in 4 persons on the internet will be able to find an old MB or usb soundboard and get it to work again, as long as you have a backup at home of the Mojo system software. Its the same thing as a Korg Kronos. it has some shite MB with a slow poke Intel Atom processor, and you can (fairly) easy exchange the MB with a faster one, hack the linux based software a bit, install a little more memory, bigger HD and get more polyphonic of the instrument and more space for samples... just that then Korg prolly won't fix it if you barf it up :) Personly I wouldn't be concerned to eg. try and install a better USB soundcard in the Mojo or play a little around with the embedded version of XP in it. I'll bet the system is placed on some kind of SD-Card, and you can most likely copy that in you home windows PC and play around with the copy on an experimental X86 Board if you are just somewhat skilled with PC's, wich will propably break the EULA that Crumar writes in the user manual (just don't tell Crumar) and as long as its only for home/personal use they prolly won't bother anyways.

I'm amazed at how close they've got the sound these days, compared to real spinning tone wheels. That's just floored me man! Out of all the Hammond clones I've been looking at, up until now the latest clones made by Hammond themselves I thought sounded the best - for me this sounds better. Those sweet licks really sold this instrument, that's some really nice playing! Thanks for a great demo:)

As a reasonably experienced player I am going to buy a clone very soon, and have been looking at the various (usually more expensive) options and TBH have avoided the Mojo because Crumar was terribly unreliable in the past (although I believe this is not technically related to Crumar of old). I use the VB3ii plugin on my recording setup (same sound generation engine as the Mojo), and I have to say it is totally superb! It really captures the dirty dynamic growl FAR better than any other I have tried. The thing with a real Hammond is; it is imperfect, it is dirty, distorted, organic and very dynamic, and all those imperfection are what make a real Hammond sound soooo good (and is the thing that most of the clones don't get right)! I have to say the VB3ii and the Mojo are very very bloody close (perhaps not so much with the presets though). I do wish they had persevered with the Hammichord layout as an option - that would be perfect!!

Patrick, The cmparison part is to compare the tones through the same speaker source! The a100 has a rca input connection and thats where I inserted the mojo mono line out! The internal simmulator was turned off... So your hearing the tones as generated by both instruments... a fair comparison for the sounds! Hope this helps...

@alastaircusick8552
@alastaircusick8552 7 лет назад
what's best guys hammond xkc1 or the mojo
@mrdali67
@mrdali67 7 лет назад
Well, the Mojo is 2 manuals and the xkc1 is 1 manual. You prolly better off comparing it with the Mojo61... 1. sound is an individual taste. 2.if the Mojo61 has the same modded Fatar keybed as the Mojo wich i suppose it has, then playing wise the Mojo61 wins 3.the Mojo61 also have extra Piano, E.Piano and Clav sounds, so + to mojo61 4.The xk1c has way more presets and custommer presets. the Mojo61 only has 2 !!! It does save how each Piano, Epiano and Clav sounds is edited, but thats only 1 preset for each piano sound. But its still not very practical if you are gonna use it with a second lower Midi controlled Keyboard and Midi Pedal where you don't have the physical drawbars for the organ sound on the Mojo61 or xk1c So here the xk1c clearly wins as you can use presets to change the lower manual and bass section with 1 button instead of having to press a key on the Mojo61 to change the drawbars to the lower manual and then make the changes manually. The Mojo has a Drawbar section for both Upper, Lower and Pedals, and 8 Presets. Most organ players will propably work with the manual Drawbars anyway and should be compared with the Hammond SK-2 If you ask me, the Mojo's VB3 engine clearly wins vs any Hammond and other brands clonewheels, even the really expensive Hammond New B3MkII or the newest XK-5 system, but thats only based on a lot of youtube videos, since I have never heard a New B3 or XK-5 played live. But vs Hammond SK-1/SK-2/XK-1c/XK-3/XK-3c/Nord, many people think the Mojo sounds a bit more like a real B3 The real deal breaker is the keybeds. Afaik Hammond uses standard Fatar beds on the xk-1c (same as do Nord on the Electro line) and the springs on those keybeds are really annoying to play when they are new. They actually feels heavyer to press down than a weighted Piano Keybed !! i have tried out both Hammond XK-1c and Nord Electro 4/5. And they do feel both very hard/springy to play and kindy feels a bit like cheap plastic keys that could break very easy if you play them a bit rough. If you'd like to compare the sound yourself, you can download the free version of VB3 v1.4 and check it out Its basically the same engine as the Mojo, only that the Mojo runs a special version of VB3 v2.xx wich isn't available for download afaik. the VB3 1.4 should run on any PC (and Mac i think) it will require a VST host.
