Comparing the Mollenhauer Denner Edition alto (treble) recorder in grenadilla with the Mollenhauer Denner Edition alto (treble) recorder in Satinwood - my last-ever recorder. No more recorders now!!
Here I play a short excerpt from Bach's Violin Sonata Number 2 in A Minor BWV 1003 - the Fugue or Fuga - which can be found in the book "Six Sonates et Partitas pour Flute a Bec Alto, Volume 1" by J S Bach (transposed from the original violin sonata) by Jean-Claude Veilhan (Publisher: Alphonse LeDuc Editions Musicales). Or, in English, Six Sonatas and Partitas for Alto Recorder (or Treble Recorder). If you like my videos, it'd be wonderful if you could buy me a coffee - thanks! buymeacoffee.c...

Loved hearing you play some on each and then playing part of the fuge, makes me want to get out some of my piano and organ music to transpose into a range for alto recorder. Thanks.

Dang! Nice recorders. Not to put bad ideas into your head but it's good to have some practice recorders to take the burden off those good ones :D

Lovely playing! I too suffer from RAS- Recorder Acquisition Syndrome. I think all the different woods are enticing as they sound so different and it's so fun to try different ones. I have a Dolmestch which I believe is (varnished) satinwood. It's beautiful - must get it out and play it.

Everyone I know who has a wood Dolmetsch loves it. My recorder teacher was left a handmade grenadilla Dolmetsch alto in the will of Carl Dolmetsch's next door neighbour!

@@BevMattocks Good to know, and how wonderful. I really want a grenadilla recorder, but they are uber pricey here. My Dolmetsch has original ivory tenons and beak. The block is signed. Not that I condone ivory, but this instrument was made in in the mid 70s.

I'm selling my Moeck Grenadilla if you're interested? It's a lovely recorder but I have too many!!

@@BevMattocks I potentially would be, but am in NZ, so shipping might be pretty steep? What model is it?

It's a Moeck 4307 Rottenburgh alto in Grenadilla but, yes, shipping would be expensive unfortunately... 😕😕😕

Hi Bev, never say never! If you ever get the opportunity try out a Kung Marsyas alto. They are really wonderful to play. Very beefy low register and superb quality.

Don't tempt me!! When I sell the 2 Moecks I'm currently selling and therefore have some more cash in the recorder kitty, then maybe. Dare I check it out, I wonder....?! 😩😩😁😁😊😊 Which model is yours?

@@BevMattocks I have both the Grenadilla and the Boxwood altos (and a plum wood soprano!). I own so many recorders now and I like to cycle through them - they all have their own characters as you know, but every time I return to the Kung Marsyas I sometimes wonder why I play anything else. I like their broad, big sound. The Grenadilla has a very clean, pure sound and the boxwood is a little more 'breathy' but still lovely, and not so heavy to hold. Let me know if you're tempted!

Alto in grenadilla is on my list.

You should get a voice flute in D 😁

Why? 🤔

@@BevMattocks Well, it was partly me just teasing and part serious. Since you've acquired all of your altos, perhaps you could jump into the world of voice flutes and sixth flutes! I've always wanted a voice flute to play flute music without transposing. I have been enjoying living vicariously through your new recorders this last few months. Voice flutes are sadly very expensive. :( Edit: You know what made me want to get a Voice Flute? Hearing the dreaded (and beautiful) Partita played in it's original key on one. There are a few recordings around.. if I can find one, I'll link it in another reply.

ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ermjg20EY8Y.htmlsi=qVg5Ds_QTG4YIUqR Here you go - the great Lobke Sprenkeling playing the Allemande on the voice flute. It has a different sound and feel on the voice flute, doesn't it?

The biggest disadvantage of a Voiceflute is that it exists only handmade, at most recorder makers in 415 Hz only (which has the biggest stretch for the right hand, compared to a keyed Tenor). Hence truly a specialist love. Very handy for brain jogging if sight-transposing to correct pitch: read as if it were bass-clef and apply 3 flats (or neutralize sharps), using F-fingerings.
