These guys were among a group of bands that tore up arenas around the world. Molly Hatchet, The Outlaws, Blackfoot, Allman Brothers, Lynryd Skynrd and the list goes on.
38 Special, ARS, Henry Paul Band, Marshal Tucker, Charlie Daniels, Kentucky Headhunters, Little Feat, Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Georgia Satellites, Grinderswitch
Doesn’t get any better….bring me back to those days….best time of my life…..didn’t know it at the time….my friends and I always say we are sooo happy that we grew up in those days….nothing compares…..Molly Hatchett rocked!!! Nothing like them now and never will be. I saw them in concert in the 70s….Wow! What a show! In the fourth row! Joints being passed back and forth lol! People were happy and free ! Not like today
Best live concert I ever seen was 38 special, molly hatchet was underrated also. I could go on! Triumph, April wine, rush, heart, blue oyster cult, etc...
I saw Molly on their Beatin the Odds tour at Boutwell auditorium in B'ham, Ala.back in 1981 & was a great show! .38 Special opened for em & was one helluva southern fried kick a$$ show!!!
I drove a truck ( when a truck was a truck) once in my lifetime for a few years and this was some of the best driving music to be had. I would get a good load and off down the interstate I would go. This was one of my favorite driving songs. Another one was Train Train by Blackfoot. God that was a lifetime ago.
What this generation considers rock we called pussy music. Half of it doesn't even have real instruments and most of the vocalists can't sing. They get autotuned. As long as you're attractive they can make you a star. I went to a concert back when cage the elephant was getting big. I liked one song and when they played it they sounded nothing like the album. They were horrible. Everyone walked away and went and waited on the next band at an empty stage. That was about the time genres started changing.
I can't imagine sitting in a seat back in the day and rocking out to these guys. Thank God I grew up in the coolest eras 70s & 80s when we could pack the floors and party with friends, & strangers to great bands like this one here.
What a great sound! Les Paul Gold Top with P90s - great lower midrange push, Flying V with humbuckers upper midrange bite, amazing bass and drums, and Danny Joe Brown on vocals. Just amazing!
SOUTHERN ROCK!!! This music had POWER! I had the opportunity to see the Outlaws open for Lynyrd Skynyrd, saw Blackfoot, Molly Hatchet(with Danny Joe Brown), Navasota, Black Oak Arkansas, and Point Blank. These bands represented the Pride of the South! You can tear down ALL THE STATUES YOU CAN BUT YOU CAN'T TEAR DOWN SOUTHERN PRIDE AND SOUTHERN ROCK!🤠🎸🤘
@@vernoncatlett3731 As a proudly southern white man, I must say your analogy is ridiculous. Study a little history, find out when most of those statues were erected, and why. I hate seeing any history eradicated, but comparing those to MLK doesn't hold water.
This vid is awesome!!! Always loved this tune. Me and a friend worked it up in '81. Reunion of my old band happened to be around the time Danny Joe Brown passed away. We talked about it and i quietly played the pre chorus descending triads. They went Whats That? Flirtin'! Worked it up and Gigged with it (i went first). Among the happiest times of my life. RIP, DJB and Dave Hlubek.
At 59 and looking back on all the concerts I have seen I must say the straight forward singing and playing without all the fluff was the strong suit of this band, and as has been said they sounded just like their albums live, DJB one of a kind lead singer, and those guitars were amazing, and their drummer could bang with the best. MH FOREVER
R.I.P. All the founding and their replacements that passed. The only band in rock n' roll history that lost all the original members. I listen intently when your songs come on the radio. God bless all the new replacements that are keeping these songs alive.
"Blue Collar Bands" is what I read in another comment, it describes Molly Hatchet and the other Southern Rock bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd perfectly. Danny is smiling because he knows that he's got the best job in the world, maybe EVER. Better even than George Carlin's bit about the perfect girl(a nymphomaniac coke dealer who owns a Porsche dealership). Those were the days - a band like this could never happen now, in these degenerate times. Good thing that we have recordings, and great people with video of great memories, and good times - who share them by posting them on RU-vid for us to see. Thanks for posting this.
Grew up as a kid playing Molly Hatchet songs in Indiana... 4 years ago, my last 2 days in rehab after suffering from a near fatal brain bleed and pulmonary embolism, the tech who drew my blood that am said “the drummer from Molly Hatchet had a stroke and is in a room down the hall.” Much to my surprise, it was none other than Dave Hlubek laying in the bed... there was an unknown band member in his room watching over him as he rested. God healed me so well by then, I was able to walk fairly well, so he may have thought I was a visitor for another patient. I let him know I was in rehab too for a massive stroke. My son brought my acoustic guitar for me to try to play. Dave’s bandmember also had a strat leaning on the chair next to him. I told him I had idolized Molly Hatchet as a youngster and went back to my room. Saw Dave the day I left but he couldn’t talk yet...
Mark, thanks for sharing that memory, I used to go to the waffle house in Cartersville Georgia if would keep me up, and one night Bob Burns from Skynyrd was waiting on a table,I said that he could come over and eat with me, I asked him if he was in Skynyrd and one of the drummers besides Artimus Pyle and he said he was, he told me that he just lived a couple of miles from there and he would have jam sessions on Friday and Saturday nights and I wanted to join in to just come on over, I asked him if he had some drum kits setup for "lefties" and he said he did, man o man did I have some fun, Artimus Pyle lived 20 miles away from Bob and he would come out and jam and that Man was 6'6" and arms that looked like they were as long as I was in height LOL
I'm 59 years young and playet this song on drums when I wore a younger man's clothes!!! Still hard drinking, partying, whoring! That makes life worth living ❤😂🎉😅😊❤😂🎉
I'll be62 in a couple months,I feel like this song was born when I was, well, probly 50 yrs of listening anyways. I always noticed how Danny Joe always took a liking to Duane,he could sure sling a V, and how bout Hlubeck,RIP boys, I'm still rockin to ya.🤘🎸
You Molly Hatchet made my 530 am playlist. On the day after Christmas. I'm engaged to Kenny Chesney:)) destined by God in 1968. 3rd marriage 4 me. # 2 for him
Man that takes me back down memory lane. I'm sorry if this offends anyone, but the band can never be the same without Danny Joe Brown and Dave Hlubek, may they both be jamming before angels in Heaven. They are my all time favorite band and were/are so greatly underrated. Rest in peace, brothers.
Amen!! I miss them both so much Duane Roland as well!!! I have always looked up to these guys and their solos and they are part of my teenage years. Not playing them - Dreaming about them
Brings back such great memories of cruising my small hometown with my boyfriend. Molly Hatchet is one of the bands that make up the soundtrack of my teen years.
Yeah, it was great. I saw Blackfoot 2 more times after that, and the Outlaws one more. But that was the only time I saw Molly Hatchet. I was a big fan then too..
If I close my eyes, I feel like I'm walking into the school lunchroom at Coldwater High School, and Molly Hatchet is blaring from the jukebox over in the corner. It's 1980, and all seems right with the world. Where do I sign up to go back?
New Year’s Eve 1994. I along with my uncle and another guy opened up a club in northeast Alabama. We had Molly Hatchet play. Danny Joe was in rehab and his 20 year old son took over for him. In a club that held 400 people that kid had them right in his hands. Did a great job and they all were 100% professional!
My mechanic in Atlanta was a drummer for them in the 90's. Great mechanic and incredible drummer. Always fun seeing him play live with a great group of musicians!
talked to Danny one night after a show for almost a hour backstage before getting in the limo - one of the nicest guys you could ever me - shame he went so young - RIP brother
I've seen these guys 4 times in concert. Awesome show every single time. Even some of their songs that you might not like as much as you do others .................................after you here Molly Hatchet play it live it will be one of your favorites.
Man oh man, these guys will forever rock my world! Back when southern rock just started ,they were the ultimate in my book. Nevermind the rest they don't count Haha. Molly forever!
Man !!! I remember seeing Moly Hatchet in the late 70s and later at the Cherokee North Carolina bike rally,,, one the greatest southern rock bands, loved Danny jo Brown ,,
Best thing about this band is the fact that they all look like they'd stop a set to kick your ass in a bar fight, then write a song about doing it. I've always loved these guys. Best southern rock act ever.
All the fun was used up by the mid 90s apparently. While I wish I could have had some of it, I'm just glad people recorded concerts and stuff like this. It lets me imagine what life used to be like, which is awesome.
@@BBQPITDOG I seen Hatchet for the 12th show in a little place on Browns Mills New Jersey (Alexander's) back then, they ripped the roof off of that place, after the show I sat at the bar, ordered a Jack & Bud. When the sauce was delivered a dude sat down next to me and said to the bar keep " I'll have the same please" I turned an looked , it was Danny. We both started laughing like banshees , then we got to quackin' bout music. I told him of my drumming technique, he took out a pad and told me to write my shit down, he said, " yea never know when you'll need a drummer". Then he grabbed his road manager and asked him for something. He came back with a bunch of picks & sticks for me. We both had a few more orders. Then he had to hit the bus, I gave him a big hug, and off he went, back to the stars. DANNY was a GIANT OF A PERSON, I'LL LOVE HIM FOREVER. HATCHET FOREVER
Best singer ever! When I saw them at a biker rally I was hanging on the scaffolding looking down! Awesome! All of them in a row rock in out! Quite an experience!
@chris michaels. I agree with you chris but you know i sae skynrd this summer and who is left rossington and metlocke . They were great. It sucks that the originals are not there but how would we feel without domeone? I think there hsve been so msny changes thru the years that does it really matter. This has been s pretty longtime lineup for molly right? O was gonns see them ay penns peak but couldnt in pennsylvania.better they are around then gone
@@ssabp8313 Actually, Rickey Medlocke is NOT an original member of Lynyrd Skynyrd! He founded the band Blackfoot...and then joined Skynyrd later on, after Blackfoot wasn't touring any longer. With that being said, I LOVE Rickey Medlocke!!!👍
@@dibber43 Chris I know that hes not a founding member of lynrd But he was basically there at the beginning and given that there's nobody else left but Gary rossington could we really afford to be this picky. From what I read he was actually intended on being in the original band so what the reserve founding member a CO founding member does it really matter if hes number one or number 2 obviously hes not does it make a difference of these number 3 number 4 number 5 he was there with the beginning and I play drums briefly I think I played on the 1st album
@@dibber43 And yes I'm very well aware in fact that hes the founding member of Blackfoot as well And many of the guys and Leonard Skinner did not want him to leave but he decided to go out on his own with Blackfoot. My point by saying hes an original member is there's nobody else left he was there from the beginning practically and a lot of people and I've even felt this way in the past that lynrd is nothing more than a cover band like a lot of other bands. And that a concert that I was at Van Sant set is long as rossington is around it's still Leonard Skinner But that doesn't give any credit to Ricky metlocke Regard less of his minor role in the past the fact is the man has been with the band for how many years now since the mid nineties and he was there at the beginning it just so happened to be that he left
Danny Joe Brown. He was one of my best friends in high school. Danny was a good guy. Got pics but can't post them here. So happy he found success. RIP Danny.
@SouthVA 757 awesome, I'm just up the Road in York co. Saw them in 83 I believe it was at the Coliseum, can't remember the year exact but maybe you were there and or remember the year, was a great time.
Just saw this video.. awesome! I'm old school and I have a Peavey Mace (212) heavy as all get out.. I've had it in storage for a decade. I think it's a '77 .. probably need some new tubes. 😎
How life can change. After MH Duane ran an office machine repair shop and then worked as a supervisor in a call center. He was one hell of a guitarist. Wow! RIP Duane.
Southern rock bands are cursed, so many members died young, must be one heck of a band in heaven. Charlie Daniels is it's newest member. God Bless them all.
An all-time favorite of mine. Saw them at the Orange Bowl in 80’, they headlined for Seger, it rained like a SOB. Danny Joe was outstanding, what a great singer and front man he was. And the boys on the six strings just ffing tore it up. What a show and “partial memory”.
