Why do parents swear they don't have to give any respect to their children?

That "Mama" position (and degree of respect) is earned by being there and nurturing that child. It takes more than just giving birth.

I hate that “I’m momma” nah you gave birth , MOM is an earned title 💯 you don’t just get respect you earn it , no matter who you are !!

This mother is so toxic. When he asks if she wants a relationship with her daughter, she answers "Yes because I want my grandson..." Seems she really doesn't care about her daughter. Reminds me exactly of my own mother. I think she downsized to a 2 bedroom to force her daughter out but wanted the grandson to stay with her. I think she wants to use her grandson as a do-over, like many narcissistic mothers. The daughter is better off going NC.

Addict, zero responsibility for their actions and results of actions, "PERIOD". These arrogant, self righteous people need to realize respect is earned. This "mom" takes zero accountability. The daughter needs to REMOVE herself from that toxic woman. Your mother will never learn or care. You will never get what you need or needed from her.

I hate it when they say "I never abandoned my kids" after saying they were in and out of prison, especially for substance abuse. Once you go to jail for committing crimes that could have easily been prevented by making the right choices while you have kids, you are abandoning them and cannot be angry that they feel let down by you as the parent! It's a choice to have kids, it's a choice to do drugs. Don't have kids if you can't even handle your own life!

The mom thinks she’s always right

Not even a minute in and this lady is on some nonsense: "I never abandoned her but I went to prison."

This is crazy to me. I can’t believe there are mothers out here that believe the title of mom absolves them of every wrong and that their child has to respect them like a God. Where would a person get an idea like this? Nobody is perfect. So, why would a mother think her children are supposed to bite their tongues and pretend she walks on water? Now I see what some girls and women are talking about concerning their mothers. I taught my child from a young age to always tell me if she feels I did something wrong or if I hurt her feelings. I explained I won’t always get things right. So, I wanted her to bring things to my attention. I did that because I wanted her to have a voice and I wanted to know if I needed to make corrections in my own actions. I expect my daughter to express herself respectfully but I’m always willing to hear her truth. I’m not happy with this mother’s perspective. She didn’t respect herself or her children in her previous choices. She doesn’t respect her adult child, now. How do you expect you daughter to have healthy boundaries and demand respect from other when you are training her she’s not allowed to have boundaries with you? You think all your bad choices are to be forgotten because you’re “ momma “? No, you have work to do. Your daughter needs to stay away from you if you can’t respect her as a person and encourage her growth. I’m so disappointed! This woman is self centered and she’s a child in a grown woman’s body. Her ways are harmful to her child.

Setting boundaries always looks like disrespect to those who never had any. The young lady is a grown woman now, you’ve missed childhood…so you have to forge a relationship based of RESPECT with this grown woman and then you may have a chance with your grand baby.

So glad my mom wasn't like this. Always allowed me to express myself without the disrespect, it has done wonders for me as an adult. She always gave me respect so she always received the upmost respect from me.

The Mother has to understand the dynamics of their relationship were damaged by her incarceration and other behaviors. The Mother needs to understand accountability. And she needs to respect her child as a competent adult who is also a parent.

I just lost my mom in 2022 and she was the matriarch and my best friend! Now I have no friends 😢 but I understand how this young lady feels, AMAZING ❤

Just like my mom. She claims she NEVER did anything wrong ever...just like this mom she claims she doesn't want to go back in the past. My mom seems worse though...she claims she doesn't care to have a relationship since I won't let her gaslight me and only wants to claim my brother as her child. I'm better off living without a narcissist for a mother 💯

I never want a forced or fake apology. What I had to learn dealing with a addict parent is that they can only meet me where their at so even without acknowledgement or an apology it's up to me to heal & move on for me!!

I think this is beautiful to see: a kind, compassionate man leading the healing discussion. We need more of this.

It irks me when parents don't own that drug use or being in jail is abandoning your child. Choices you made led to you not being present. Take accountability for your actions. You can negate any good you have ever been to you kids if you make poor choices and couple it with not taking responsibility when its time to make amends. You also gotta to get out your head that someone speaking on their hurt and your wrongdoing is disrespectful. If you did wrong, you gotta stand in that.

Y’all. I really like Karamo. I haven’t followed his full career but I’m a fan now. I’ve said this before but he’s the voice on my waze app and I feel like he goes everywhere with me 😅

I watch so many Karamo episodes and these toxic traits are in many mothers. Especially the black community we truly have so many generational curses and trauma that needs to be broken. We all need healing !

Forget these shows especially when it comes to the dynamics of the Black family. Parents can be trifling, non existent , non supportive and narcissistic. Yet once the child is grown and you have no responsibility now you want to be respected as a parent. GTFOH!! I will love you from a distance.

Am I the only one who hates when people say “let’s forget the past, or let’s ignore it and move on” why not acknowledge it and move forward, because I believe those are very different points. Because if we don’t acknowledge the past and how we felt we’ll be forced to push it down and it will always hurt like it happened yesterday.

Being momma doesn’t exempt you from everything!

My dad had the same disgusting attitude and he demanded respect even though he didn't do much to gain it from me, but guess what? He still got it from me the entire time he was alive. I can always say that I treated him better than he treated me. By no means was it easy having to tolerate a parent like himself. It caused me so much mental anguish. I suffered him until he died. Even a year of mourning him, I was finally able to forgive him fully and find peace over our tumultuous relationship. Now, I'm seeking relief from his mother. She made him the way he was, so you can imagine how I suffer her too.

Respect is earned not given 💯🙁 that goes for parents as well !

This mother will never change unfortunately. In fact, she acts as if she's still using drugs. We have to learn to adjust our expectations for parents that aren't interested in getting past their own adversities.

Great segment!!👏🏽 For my own personal experience with my mom I had to show her that respect was required by not allowing her to be apart of my life. Today we’re a lot better because I set boundaries and she must respect them as I respect her’s. It’s unfortunate that that’s how we got to our better place but at least we got there and we rarely have anymore disagreements that become explosive. You have to teach people how to treat you, including family. I truly believe that this is what happens when parents never deal with their own traumas before having children or while raising their children. I wish them the best!🙏🏽❤

It's crazy how some parents especially those who barely raised their children ripping and running the streets on drugs chasing after men etc..pick and choose when they want to be a Parent and feel they should be exempt to any accountability concerning their childrens pain and trauma that was created by them

What I'm getting is that the mother doesn't like her oldest daughter because she reminds of Her of all the mistakes she's made. The mother is trying to focus on the 15yo because she feels like she still has time to be a mom to her. I KNOW THIS FROM EXPERIENCE. I have seen 3 DIFFERENT mothers do this with their children, all ex drug addicts.

Low key my mom with one third of the physical abuse and a times ten the respect that she thinks I owe her automatically despite the verbal abuse and always her taking her anger out on me. I can relate so much and I pray for infinity.

When I hear the mom speak I hear the voice of a past generation of which the role itself was to be respected over EVERYTHING..regardless of treatment, trauma, addictions, abuse..etc…some generations are not taught that you have to “own your stuff” ! We definitely have to be conscious and accountable to how we parent and accept when we fall short in this parenting journey.

She said she never admitted to substance-abuse which means that her daughter was without her mother for some part of her life and then she went to jail which means more time.

At the end of the day, any relationship that hurting you HAS to go. In the daughters case, she has a child to raise. She needs to focus on herself and her family and make sure she's emotionally fit to be the best mother that she can be The mama needs some serious therapy to have any type of healthy relationship in her life. Don't wait up for it

They're gonna be alright. I wish I could bring my mom on the show, but her pride and literal comfort in being divided, woll not allow her to even consider coming on the show. They're gonna get through this and there's gonna be glory in this family. At least her mother came to the show, looked her in the eyes before a wide audience and apologized. I havent spoken to my mom in going on 3 years. I always pray for my moms heart.

My mom had 3 & NEVER had NONE of these issues w/my mom. She’s is literally MY BEST FRIEND. They have to acknowledge BOTH ppl experienced something different. That's what happens when you make your kids Your friends. Be in a mom, always has to come first. Your job is to teach nurture. And if there's no father around to discipline, it's okay to have fun with your children. It's okay to have a girl's tonight. But if you don't establish the difference, they're gonna treat you like a free and friends fight sometimes And get disrespectful real quick
