I was on the donor list for decades but became ill a few years ago with a genetic immunodeficiency. In 2020 I was notified that I was taken off the donor registry and no longer allowed to be a donor. They told me my immunodeficiency would not negatively affect the recipient, and my marrow would still help them, but they said taking my bone marrow from me would be a huge risk to my life. I said, "isn't that my decision to make then?" They said, "No." I fought hard to stay on the list and even pleaded my case, and made them send my case for further review to their staff physician specialists, but they agreed I should be taken off. I'm not happy about it. My risk is mine to make I still think. What if my marrow can save someone and you took me off the list? Im still upset about it. I mean I'd understand if my illness would harm the recipient, but it won't. They took me off the list bc the procedure would be harmful to ME. Well... that should be my choice. A wonderful program that I wish I was still a part of. God bless all you do.

Does it hurt a lot to donate? And if so how much on a scale of 1-10???

For most people its like a plasma donation. Occasionally it will require surgical excision of bone marrow from the hip directly, but thats becoming less and less common as technology improves. I can’t give an exact number because I don’t know your pain tolerance but if you’ve ever given blood or had a blood draw, its like that but more time consuming (takes a few hours as opposed to a few minutes)

@@TwirlGirl2197 thank you so much for your insightful response! Are you a doctor or nurse? So I have been through child birth 4 times one of which was a c-section so it sounds like it would definitely be less painful than child birth lol. I think I have a high tolerance for pain it’s just the fear of it. It’s mostly all in my head. So the next time I go to my doctor I’m going to inquire about this more.

I’m not a doctor or nurse, I’ve just had a cousin and a friend both give bone marrow and I considered signing up for the registry myself. I have a medical condition that makes it not a good idea to be on it but I had to learn a lot about the process to determine if it would be safe for me to donate if I ever got the call. In case you are wondering I have a heart defect which is sensitive to things like low blood sugar and dehydration. I have to prepare days in advance just to do a whole blood donation. While I could possibly donate marrow when I’m in good health, I can’t exactly plan when I might get a call that I’m someone’s match and I don’t want to let them down in the event I’m unable to donate at the time.
