How rediculous. She's paid taxes, has a licence, passport etc. They should retroactive the law. Poor lady.

Whats sad about this is that somehow somewhere there are people actually devoting time, energy and funds to make that letter show up years after she was actually issued a passport. Sounds like a big waste of time to me to make her not a citizen where she already was one. They need to just fix it for her period. She paid taxes and everything. Someone screwed her over big time.

CBC reporters please do your homework. There are a couple of errors in this piece. It says 2nd generation Canadians born abroad who haven’t reasserted by age 28. Those born in another country are fine so long as they lived in Canada on their 24th b-day. Also the law IS retroactive. You could have easily looked on Wikipedia. It says. “Bill C-37, which received Royal Assent on April 17, 2008, amended the Citizenship Act to give Canadian citizenship to those who lost or never had it due to certain provisions in existing and former legislation. The law came into effect on April 17, 2009, one year following Royal Assent. People who were citizens when the law came into force did not lose citizenship as a result of these amendments. The law was made retroactive to the time of birth or loss of citizenship, “

My grandmother was born on the way to the hospital so her parents just turned around and went home. Baby was fine so why travel the other half of the way to the hospital. They hassled her because she had no birth certificate was 72 and collecting a pension. The problem is they have a paper system and a computer one they simply don't transfer all the data over as its to much work so if the computer doesn't have the right info it's a problem. The birth cetificate says on it this isn't an I'd but the government accepts it to get I'd and ss number. A bit of a flawed system

That's a good thing. You don't want to be a Canadian citizen. Stay as a sovereign citizen if you can. Who would want to be part of their democracy because it's enslavement.
