In this video I'm showing the repair of a broken shifting for. It was broken when I bought the Lathe.
On theses Lathes you need to remove the spindle in order to get the fork out.
The Lathe is a 1955 Series 61 16 inch x 78 with a swing of 18 1/2
10 HP, Rapid traverse carriage.
The Donor parts Lathe will be scraped out soon so if you are looking for parts send me a email. Still have spindle and all gears in head stock.

I wouldn't call cast iron junk. The reason its as old and condition is the benefit of cast iron. That took a hell of a wallop to snap that gear shift carrier. If that was made in any other country it would be scrap 40 years ago. You did a great repair job and the correct way . Nice machine will now live another hundred years.

Nice going, saving that great machine from the jaws of scrappers! Green with envy over here... I'm impressed by the amount of work one is able to carry out single-handed just by having access to the right tools. Never seen a dump trailer before - I didn't know such things existed. Quite handy.

Really great repair on the fork , I would have just chamfered a small piece where it broke off but the way you did it gives the braze much more holding power . One big reason I like your videos, they show the difference between how an amateur and expert craftsman would make a repair like that . Thanks for sharing

Nice braze job. When i repair cast iron, I usually try to work in some mechanical fastening along with the weld. for that little appendage, I would prep it the same way you did, tack the steel part in place, and drill & tap for a long set screw to fasten the joint. In my case, I would fusion weld the joint using TIG and Ni-rod. Just my take, you did a great job.

I guess living next to that huge iron bridge puts these things into perspective, doesn't it? A 9000 lb lathe doesn't appear so large after all ; )

New subscriber, 50 year retied journeymen machinist---- we NEVER retire we just change our hours. lol. I would have driller & tapped and counterbored the repair fork with a long 10/32 socket head cap screw on the Bridgeport mill. Two of them if passible as there is a bunch of shock when you drop it in & out of high range. Looooove them Monarchs from that time eara. In my opinion, only one better is the old Clausings of the 60s. Never care for the La Bonds (with that stupid Servo shift crap) or the Lodge & Shipley as the Morachs run cooler. Best bang for the buck is the 20 inch swing Summits but brother , they run HOT !!!!!!! after about an hour but you can take 3/8"a side ( 3/4s" a pass) no sweat with a 20"Summit off 4140 tool steel bar. yes I know the Summits are butt UGLY ! but they will get the work out all day everyday. Simple to use to. The American Pacemaker is also a good lathe, but kind of clunky to run until you get use to em.

Hey Gary. What was so far gone with the "Donor" lathe that made it a donor lathe? Did it have some other serious issues? Nice repair job. Cheers, Tom
@OldIronMachineWorks
@OldIronMachineWorks 3 года назад
Tom, this Lathe did not come with a compound or cross slide. It had a huge belt grinder up overhead that you would pull down from the top to grind whatever you were grinding on therefore the ways were pretty shot. I’m normally the last one to scrap something out. My friend has sold some parts through practical machinist And OWWM. But has had no interest in the spindle or any gears which is surprising. The guy bought two from the auction and the other is still advertised on craigslist, you might’ve noticed it. But it’s a 20 inch with 24 swing. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Gary

Why is this part common to fail? From operators trying to force a gear change while everything is still turning?
@OldIronMachineWorks

Tom, that’s exactly what happens. I think if they let everything come to a complete stop and roll the chuck around by hand when changing gears they would never have a problem. Hope you’re getting some shop time in. Gary

Why not make a new fork out of plate steel and heat treat it using the broken one as a pattern, that would be the smart thing to do.

@@bobbg9041 OK then, In your opinion what's your estimated time to build a new fork heat treated and all ?
@bobbg9041
@bobbg9041 3 года назад
@@OldIronMachineWorks 20 hours but it depends on what tooling you have and how precision it needs to be. 20 hours @ 18.00 an hour 550$ part in-house not counting materials (scrap steel) and heat treat. With a plasma cutter you might not even spend that much time if its water jet. If you paid some other shop to make it 3 4 k. I didnt bid work or do time estimates. I ran machines.
