Monarchy in Mormonism

Although James Strang is perhaps the Mormon who is most famous for crowning himself king, he did so in emulation of Joseph Smith Jr, who restored "the kingdom of God on earth" in his final year and was anointed its king in a secret ceremony of the Council of Fifty. John Hamer will look at the evolution of the prophetic monarchy as it has continued in the two largest sects of the Restoration: the Utah-based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Missouri-based Community of Christ and consider the future of both institutions.

I really enjoy your lectures, especially the longer ones. I live in Maine and am a “cradle Episcopalian “ and am on a constant quest to understand the underlying history of Jude’s Christian evolutions. I really appreciate your open and non doctrinal consideration of all aspects of these topics and look forward to your talks. 🌲♥️🌲

I personally prefer the longer lectures. 2hr lectures would be amazing, I do like that I can listen to different subjects throughout the day when it is shorter, but even with 2 hrs lectures, that is, for me, at least 4 lectures a day. But I am still listening to many of the older ones. These newer ones are nice and loud so I can listen while at work, I end up skipping any quite lecture. Love all your lectures bud, keep it up!

Very interesting lectures long or short. On the topic of divisions after Joseph Smith as a Baha’i this makes me appreciate the covenant of Baha’u’llah (the founder of the Baha’i Faith) This written covenant made the line of succession more clear preventing divisions. Although several attempts to create sects have occurred they are dying out due to a written covenant describing how the Baha’i Faith should be organized. Today it is headed by the House of Justice in Haifa Israel, an elected institution ordained in the writings of Baha’u’llah.

I've lived in Michigan practically my entire life, and I've never heard of the King of Beaver Island. Of course, I hadn't heard of the Boy Governor either. The Toledo War was the only one of those 3 I had heard of.

I found the comparisons of monarchal dynasties and how power passed among the different branches of the churches of the restoration tradition to be very valuable in helping me understand the early schisms in the movement. I'm not a member of this religious tradition; I'm an atheist that enjoys your lectures. I enjoyed this longer presentation as I think this subject is complex enough to warrant the longer time commitment. (I understand all of the topics you cover are complex enough that you could create entire lecture series on any one topic, but this subject in particular really needed the extra time you devoted to it.) Thank you for experimenting with a longer presentation -- this must've been that much more work for you.

It's fun listening to your lectures. Maybe try and talk on why Utah LDS Church didn't give blacks the priesthood until 1978

I spotted your deliberate error and claim my prize. The struggle between Stephen and Matilda in the 1800s lol. Great talk though, I learned a lot.

Very cool framework to look at succession in the churches. I would definitely be interested in a John Taylor lecture. He seems to get overlooked a bit, and I wonder if that is related to his position of veneration among polygamist groups.

Mr Hamer. I love your lectures. I believe in a higher power but dont believe in Religion, I am curious about how you maintain your faith when you have so much knowledge?

I don’t think that dictatorships per se have a legitimacy crisis, for example, I don’t think a whole lot of people in China view Xi Jinping or the CCP’s rule over the People’s republic as some kind of pretender. Dictatorships are more than just the military imposing their will on others. I think that what differentiates a dictatorship from a monarchy is that the dictators claim legitimacy based on their association with some other institution than their family or bloodline. That could include a legitimate or sham election (Nazi Germany, or modern Russia, Hungary, Venezuela), ties to a particular political party or (the Soviet Union, China, or pretty much any eastern bloc country during the Cold War), or religious legitimation (Iran), or even some combination of all of the above. That’s not to say that nepotism doesn’t occur in dictatorships, like in Syria or Nicaragua but in those cases the family members tend to take pains to base their claims on more than just who their family is. Taiwan was briefly a family dictatorship, although Chiang Kai-Shek’s son transitioned his country to an open multiparty democracy. There could be legitimacy issues for the dictator if one of those institutions lose their legitimacy in the eyes of the people. The communist party lost credibility in the USSR and within a few years the Soviet Union was gone. If enough cats get herded in Hungary in theory Victor Orban could be out of office, or if Iran’s religious authorities loose credibility with enough segments of the population than that could be the end of the regime for them.

Excellent presentation especially in relationship to the three priesthood fellowships and sources of authority in the Church: 1) the lineal patriarchal order and 2) the descent of the patriarchal lineage in the church as a representative of the great millennial patriarchal order and government 3) the political government of the order of Israel thru the promised restoration of the dividic lineage of Jesus Christ. Premillennialist era Christ will be acknowledged as King of kings and Lord of Lord to reign from the restored his restored ç
