Joseph Smith's Redefinition of God

Just a view months before his death, Joseph Smith announced: “God Himself who sits enthroned in yonder heavens is a Man like unto one of yourselves - that is the great secret!” Fifteen years earlier, when dictating the Book of Mormon, Smith had espoused a trinitarian view of God. Likewise Smith’s earliest account of his “First Vision” of Christ fit into a kind of “Born Again” experience common to contemporary Christian revivals. The later version of the story that describes “two distinct personages,” reflects Smith’s later theological speculation, which seems to reject Western monotheism itself. John Hamer of Toronto Centre Place will look at Smith’s Nauvoo-era redefinition of God and its theological implications.
A Q&A and discussion will follow the presentation. Please send your questions on the live chat.

I can’t handle churches any longer because of how most act, and how they allow themselves to be portrayed as to any and everyone, especially people that are trying to find their way to God, but all they can find are people who are beyond help. @@4everseekingwisdom690 Im not sure you have read the book of Mormon. Im pretty sure if you did you would not find anything unbiblical. Read it and see. Now I am not saying you can't or shouldn't critique it, be skeptical etc but most if not all theological scriptures in it are also in the bible. Mormonism is a lot bigger than most suppose. But just saying, find a theological concept in the book of mormon that you disagree with and post it. Not historical, not academic but theological. The BOM is very restoration NT Christian like. I get you can academically argue with it (you can also do that with other scripture) but the beliefs in it regarding The Father, The Son and the Holy Ghost are pretty spot on. Check it out.

@ceninant
@ceninant 2 года назад
It's because he's a bright informed and open-minded person that he is in a church. There are two kinds of pastors, theologians and charlatans. My grandfather had a Doctorate in Divinity. My grandparents basically raised me and they taught me to always ask questions, especially of leaders. Judge them by their fruits. God wouldn't have given the command to master the earth if Even that wasn't a matter of spiritual learning.

I have a tough time imagining how Joseph Smith came up with the becoming gods with planets thing. Wouldn't that be something? I'm glad his son rejected it though. To me it bears more or a resemblance to this roman belief in human deification. The ancients believed that men could become gods through great deeds. Christianity inverted this, by saying god had become a man out of love. It's regression
@andrewsuryali8540
@andrewsuryali8540 2 года назад
There are many science fiction depictions of JS' theory, although not exactly the same as what he described. If you watch the Babylon 5 series, there's an ancient species of "ascended beings" who are basically gods and the human race itself would "ascend" in the future. In the reboot of Battlestar Galactica (which is directly inspired by Mormonism) there is a similar idea of humans becoming something like gods. Also, when you think about it, that's also what happens to light side Jedi when they die. More recently, The Expanse has something similar and even has a Mormon starship (that the Mormons never got to use because someone stole it).
@andrewsuryali8540

@LucasGMdeAraujo Yes. Glen A. Larson (creator of BG) was a longstanding member of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, the main Mormon congregation. Larson inserted many references to the more controversial elements of Utah Mormon theology developed by Joseph Smith and Brigham Young before they became mainstream knowledge (and became heavily ridiculed). Examples of the references are: 1. Kobol, the ancestral home of humanity, is a reference to Kolob, the star where God dwells according to Joseph Smith. 2. Adama the savior is a reference to the Adam God Doctrine promulgated by Brigham Young. 3. The Twelve Colonies and their exodus is a reference to the exodus of the Lost Tribes of Israel from the Holy Land to the Americas in the Book of Mormon. Basically the entire plot of the original Battlestar Galactica series was based on the Book of Mormon. 4. Similarly, the Cylon genocide of the Twelve Colonies is a reference to the Book of Mormon's massacre of the Nephites by the Lamanites. It should be noted that Larson probably had no special reasons to include all these references. He just happened to be a Mormon and chose to include stories from his faith in his work, much the same way lots of Bible references end up in modern fiction.
@Element-oe8hn
@Element-oe8hn Год назад
@elcucaracho Correct. "The Lods of Kobol" in Battlestar Galactica derive from the fictitious planet Kolob given by Joseph Smith in his spurious "translation" derived from an Egyptian funereal scroll that he named The Book of Abraham. When hieroglyphics were subsequently translated, following the discovery of the Rosetta Stone, the Book of Abraham was shown to be an out an out fantasy/hoax, therefore according closely in nature to all his other productions.

Question 1: No. No appeal at all. It's so outside the mainstream of Christian thought and reality, that it has no appeal. Question 2. I don't see a problem here. Nor does the mainstream theology of Christianity either of traditional or biblically based. It is clear that there is "eternal punishment" and "wrath" for the wicked. Question 3. Since there is no Christian basis among the fathers or saints of the Church for a plan of Salvation other than Christ's sacrifice and resurrection, I don't see a place for this multiverse explanation of salvation. All that said, this another excellent and informative presentation.

In order to reconcile pluralism and monotheism we can think of God composed of four parts1-4 . *1*The spirit of -God (eternal from everlasting to everlasting), *2*An exalted form of God that appears as a man but is not a carnal mortal man ie think like a Resurrected Christ now or in the future (walked with Adam symbolic or not and to what extent each matters not) and *3* the bride of a Christ or ecclesia(which is symbolically the perfected by his sacrifice church or body of believers and becomes one with "Christ") and *4* believers beginning their journey and already "known" by God to be on the path to oneness with Christ..like an engagement . The spirit of God Joseph Smith said was the mind and will of God in the lectures on faith (not actually a personage) is one and unites all the parts..similar to blood unites all the organs of the human body. Now this makes the term Elohim more understandable as a monotheistic and plural indicating God is One but has parts. Add in progression to perfection ie "Be ye perfect" etc. And you have it. Anything the spirit of God designates as having his name...you do it to that you do it to god....such as the angel mentioned as YHVH in the fiery bush. It also explains seeming contradictory prophets explaining God. They no longer contradict. There ya go. ..imo in this way we can become one with christ even having a similar role in the future in a dimension designated for such or world. We can progress and experience oneness with Christ and God. The parts are all God once they are perfected..in name. Hence the four letters of the name. This is only a model for understanding and obviously has the flaws of man in bias and understanding but ...seems pretty sound. All ascension or mystical explanations by early Christians and even by other faiths using different words sound similar to this. This harmonizes Joseph Smiths idea, the Scriptures and even offers a hypothesis for Judaism (who know about parts of God..don't let them say otherwise, its in their Enochian and other mysteries in the Kabbalistic writings. In this way you can say there is but ONE God (remember the whole body is God united by the ONE spirit in unity of mind and will and mercy but also see its different parts and even recognize its authorized different parts...like the angel in the fiery bush. That had the name placed upon it and said I am that I am. The mind and will of God (The Holy Spirit) can speak from any part of the Godhead at any time..ie speech =word and represent any part at any time.

IF you were to see God today, you would see him as a man, but what's God like when you don't see him? God is whatever God is. God doesn't change, but your definition of God -- who or what you understand God to be must be redefined often -- every day if possible -- as you grow in your knowledge of God. Religion has had, as a means of control, the practice of forcing fixed definitions of God upon people as a results of one person's interpretations of another person's direct experience. So, here you are 2-3 steps removed from your own experience of and with God, Study others' experiences with God, if you must. Let them stretch your mind, but in the end, you must define God for yourself. This is to be encouraged -- even if for a time your search leads you to the experience that there is no god. But, be flexible, be open to change and growth. And even if you came up with a new definition of God every day, and hopefully, arriving at an approximate definition and then refining it. Even if you constantly did this, you would not exhaust all the possible definitions of God, and arrive at a point where your understanding is complete. Look at it this way: for all eternity, everything is a search by God to understand himself.

How can you understand the challenges of understanding the incarnation and embrace such nonsense as is found in LDS? Good grief! All of the philosophical concepts of god begin with the idea of a being complete in him/her self. Becoming part of god rejects god being complete. This question of "becoming God/god" or apotheosis is, i dare say an erroneous Christian concept that is nowhere to be found in Christian scripture. However, there are verses in both the OT Psalm 82:6 & the NT John 10:34 that affirm man's divinity or godhood in the common statement.. "YE ARE gods/GOD'S". The above can be interpreted in two ways, one that "we ALL are gods, each n everyone is god. I understand that this is a difficult concept to grasp in Western Christianity, but in Oriental Vedic spirituality realising that "you are god " is the ultimate truth. This "Self realised Godhood" is the highest mystical knowledge & understanding of Cosmic Spirituality, Godhood and Oneness. The second way it may be interpreted is that we all belong to God, as in the property of God. The question is not "becoming god" but whether we are gods or we belong to God ??.. No becoming

If God (the Father) was once a man living a long time ago on another planet, who created Him? And was this God also created by another God? Is it gods all the way down through eternity or was there a creation of the universe at some point? Is the ascension to godhood like being promoted in rank where you're granted powers by the god who came before you or is it like Pokemon evolution, where it just happens if you meet certain criteria? If God can just make people Gods than why doesn't he just do that without all the suffering and dying on earth rigamarole? And if you can just become God through your own abilities why even worship a god? What happens if humans explore the stars and start colonizing a planet ruled by a different god? Do they have to start worshipping that god or do they still worship the god from their home planet? If they die, do they go to the new planet's spirit prison or to the old planet's spirit waiting room? Can you baptize for the dead of alien planets? Can we be visited by alien angels and/or demons? Does every planet have to have the equivalent of Jesus dying for that planet's sins or have they worked out alternative avenues to salvation? Sorry, I had all these questions when I was a LDS Mormon which were never answered; I doubt any of them will be answered on this side of the celestial kingdom but I thought they would be fun to bring up as hypotheticals :)

It’s not just believing in evolution or believing in humans being created in the last 10,000 years by a god… that’s a false dichotomy… You could not believe in the theory of evolution and believe humans have been around for millions of years. you could believe in a god or not or gods or that evolution can occur but there’s other processes at play. Kinda nonsense to break people down into just those 2 groups, either you believe in evolution or humanity was created by a god 10,000 years ago, there’s no other possibilities. uh, I am not represented in those statistics….

One nitpick about your section on evolution. People don’t choose to believe anything. They’re either convinced and believe or they’re not convinced and don’t believe. You cannot choose to believe something. It’s not possible. People who don’t accept evolution, are simply not convinced of its truth or are convinced in an opposing view, and therefore cannot believe in evolution to avoid engaging in cognitive dissonance.

This is the reason I left the LDS Church. I realized that I was in a church that did not believe in a biblical God. They believe Jesus is created by a Father and mother god in heaven, that Jesus is lucifers brother. Also, that God and Jesus are exalted men. Also, Jesus was not born of the Holy Spirit, but Jesus was the literal son of God, created by God and Mary. This doctrine is not biblical, they are not a Christian church, they are polytheist, they believe in more than one God.

Rather than presenting, Joseph Smith’s redefinition of God, you should think about presenting the early Christian father’s definition of God. The first century apostles would have a looked at the early Christian fathers, who never knew or spoke with Jesus personally, like they had three heads, if Origen or Athanasius or the like were to have had the opportunity to explain to the original.apostles the idea of a holy trinity. The Godhead is described and referred to by Paul, who at least knew the original first presidency of the Church, namely Peter James, and John! I think you have a bias toward what scholars say and think. When the scholarly view or conclusion is relied upon as authoritative then things like trinitarianism get introduced and leave a perverse, indelible imprint on what people think and believe instead of relying on the evidence actual statements and practices of Jesus and first century church authorities evident in the New Testament. Christian scholarship is fairly rife with divergent views beginning with the Early Christian Fathers, the Constantine perversions in Nicea and other 4th century councils and continuing through myriad papal bulls and edicts on down through the Reformers. In the end, you have to ask yourself whether there is only one true theology or not. By 1820, had the falling away or the perversion of the doctrines of Christianity become so complete that Elohim and Jehovah felt that the time had come to restore the plain and precious truths of the Plan of Salvation? Was Joseph the person foreordained to be taught the true theology directly by the Father and Son? Do we expect that Joseph was to have learned this theology all at once, or over the course of years and he continued to receive revelations through the Holy Spirit as he sought to fulfill his mission? Was Joseph prophet of God like Moses or Jeremiah or myriad others? If the Godhead did deem it time to begin a new dispensation, would they not utilize the mouth of a prophet as they had in other dispensations? Is Joseph that prophet? These are some of the salient questions that you have to answer for yourself. No scholar or scholarly work is going to provide those answers. In fact, they may cloud the issues entirely. One must study the Scriptures and turn to Heavenly Father and ask him in the name of Jesus Christ whether Joseph Smith is a prophet ordained to bring about the restoration of the pure and undefiled Gospel of Christ or not. Scholarship, although interesting and, in certain cases very helpful in gaining understanding, cannot be relied upon as the final word. That final word must be found by each of us by direct revelation received through the Holy Spirit from our Father in Heaven. Thank you for a very interesting discussion.

As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ let me just correct his statement about women not becoming gods. D&C 132 teaches 19 And again, verily I say unto you, if a man marry a wife by my word, which is my law, and by the new and everlasting covenant, and it is sealed unto them by the Holy Spirit of promise... it shall be done unto them in all things whatsoever my servant hath put upon them, in time, and through all eternity; and shall be of full force when they are out of the world; and they shall pass by the angels, and the gods, which are set there, to their exaltation and glory in all things, as hath been sealed upon their heads, which glory shall be a fulness and a continuation of the seeds forever and ever. 20 Then shall they be gods, because they have no end; therefore shall they be from everlasting to everlasting, because they continue; then shall they be above all, because all things are subject unto them. Then shall they be gods, because they have all power, and the angels are subject unto them. A man and a woman who are sealed together through the priesthood and receive exaltation become gods together. Becoming gods means we become like God, our Heavenly Father. We know that the creation of Spirit children is a process that requires both male and female diety. Also there is no requirement that one must be a polygamist to enter into the Celestial Kingdom.

@moorek1967 it has nothing to do with you believing in the Doctrine & Covenants. The speaker made a statement about the LDS church beliefs as if it were true and the above comment was correcting this statement. P.S. if you knew anything about polygamy when it was practiced in the LDS church you would not make such an ignorant statement about sex. Women were unable to work and provide for their families back then, many of the men had been killed in war or in taming a new land. Men married more then one woman to provide for them and their children often there was no sex with the extra wives. I'm not dumb enough to say it didn't happen but this wasn't the purpose at all. Once it was not longer a necessity the church abolished it. We have a few stories in our genealogy and in one a man was not able to marry his sweetheart unless he married her mother, who had 5 other children and had lost her husband, also. Desperate times call for desperate measure

@@maribradford14 Sorry, your excuse about women and not finding work will not fly. Polygamy is 100% for the sexual satisfaction of men who commit adultery and call it "marriage". May I ask, what is the minimum age for marriage to little girls? Do these women need to be taken care of on the man's Kolob because she can't find a job? Jesus said if a man looks upon a woman to lust after her in his heart, he commits adultery with her already, and that is how your "marriages" happen, a man thinks he needs another woman and lusts after one, then he thinks he needs another and lusts after her, and then he thinks he needs another one and lusts after her....tell me, do you mormon men marry solely for the purpose of taking care of them financially or do you need to have sex with them? Freemason's from My understanding not doing their levels don't end up being Gods nor have I ever heard even a whiff of a claim of that to be the case. His breadth of knowledge and his presentation has no rival. He gives a historical perspective based on writing and use. He also never appears with a thumb on the scale or extreme judgment. He clears up thousands of years of mythical, and religious knowledge and is a great service.

There's no dogma of evolution. It's a demonstrable undeniable fact, which all experts agree on, and pretty much the only people who reject it are for clearly religious reasons. Acceptance of the fact of evolution is a worldwide thing. Experts everywhere agree. Meanwhile, rejection of evolution is a geographically segregated issue, that follows the concentration of certain religious sects. There are more Muslim and Hindu creationists, but since you speak English you're probably an evangelical or a Jehovah's Witness. Crunching statistical numbers, probably an evangelical. Did I guess? If so, how did I do it?

@@moorek1967 The role of Latter-day Saint women, for example, and changes made in the Book of Mormon -- indeed, the Book of Mormon itself, which Hamer seems to understand only superficially. The major problem with Hamer's approach is that he is judging the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by the tenets and history of creedal Christianity -- by something the Church has never claimed to have been a part of. (It's like judging Christianity by the tenets of Islam.) Hamer quotes Joseph Smith's statement that if we could look into heaven for five minutes, we would know more than all of the learned professors (like Hamer) about the nature of God -- but Hamer is judging what Joseph Smith learned by direct revelation from God by the tenets and history of creedal Christianity instead of judging creedal Christianity by the revelations of God. I guess what bothers me most is that this lecture really isn't about Joseph Smith's theology as much as it's about John Hamer. John Hamer is who Paul was referring to when he wrote to Timothy that "In the last days perilous times will come...for men shall be lovers of their own selves...having a form of godliness but denying the power thereof...ever learning, and never able to come to a knowledge of the truth" (2 Timothy 3:1-7).

@@brb5506 Really? You just sat here and told me it has never been part of Christianity and yet you falsely attach Jesus' name to a false doctrine, that you know full well in your heart is false. Since LDS falsely uses the name of Jesus, then why did Joseph Smith need another testament, to say Jesus needed another secret one that only came about after Joseph Smith decided to commit fraud and lust after a 14 year-old girl. Jesus said "It is finished". Is there another testament? No, it is finished. This so-called something you claim is god, your god, the one you wish to claim Joseph Smith worshiped, is not of the Bible, this god thing you worship only became god when Joseph Smith decided to trick people with a stone in his hat peeping in it to find treasure, that he never found by the way. And this same hat peeping is how he "translated" the Book of Mormon. Your god is not eternal, because if he was simply exalted which means nothing, then were his parents exalted as well? Why don't you worship the parents of your god, because they would be gods as well. Don't say that I am wrong because I do know the King Follet Sermon. So this god, born a man somewhere out there on some place called Kolob, was he born as a man of flesh and blood or simply a spirit baby? What were his parents' names? What did they look like? Where is their testament that this baby was theirs? Where is the evidence? The eternal, self-existent God who was always God, suddenly one day decides to directly reveal to Joseph Smith to have sex with another man's wife and rape a 14 year-old girl? And you don't realize that he also adored Mohammad and Islam? Yes, your polygamy comes from Islam, so go read the Quran and tell me Joseph Smith could be true, then why not Mohammad? and his mother pregnant four years and a light shining out of her private parts all the way to Syria. Go ahead and tell me why he is not your prophet as well if Joseph Smith said he would be like Mohammad. Were god's parents married in the temple? Did they wear special underwear? Did they have an LDS minister perform the ceremony? Did they go to Utah to get married? And was god's name registered as being born to them? Don't quote the Bible if you don't know what it really says. Everything Joseph Smith taught about the god of his penis is contrary to every word in the Bible. Golden Tablets? You mean the angel Moroni never appeared in history to anyone else, just to one day give a hat peeping con man a look at some tablets he claimed was made of gold, written in a language that never existed...for Smith to have to hat peep to translate? You mean this Moroni who came to Joseph Smith once, except twice, was the only one who knew about the Native Americans, and it took Joseph Smith to you about the Native Americans what they should have already known? You mean the Native Americans that Joseph Smith said Jesus came to, yet Joseph Smith had to tell you about the Native Americans? Moroni could not go to the Native Americans? Why now? Why did Moroni not go to them and tell them to be prophets? Seems to me that if Moroni was so sure about being right, then why was no prophet sent to them until Joseph Smith was born to a con artist family who cheated a lot of people? If Jesus came to the Native Americans, let the Native Americans tell it. But I want you to go through history and show us where to find Reformed Egyptian. Go ahead. Egypt isn't the real name the people called themselves, that is the Greek name from the Ptolemy dynasty. The Hebrews called them Mizraim, but they called themselves Khem. In which dynasty did Reformed Egyptian appear? After Christ? Well, that would be Demotic, evolving into Coptic. So why are the Copts not using Reformed Egyptian? You mean to tell me that nobody on the whole planet knew about Reformed Egyptian, not even Egyptians until Moroni told Joseph Smith, while Egypt has maintained its history over 5,000 years? They never mentioned in their own history? Wow, he really got you fooled, believing an angel named Moroni told about the Native Americans but never appeared to any of the Native Americans and presented to him a book in a language that not even the people of the place even knew...Amazing, and he learned it all by hat peeping.

Prove also he did not marry a woman already married to another man. 4:Prove outside of LDS the Lehites and Nephites. 5: Prove from historical sources that Joseph Smith was not a con man using hat peeping. 6: Prove outside LDS the veracity of the BOM. 7: Prove outside LDS and King Follett Sermon that God was a man who became exalted. 8: Prove that you will become exalted. 9: Prove any doctrine or teaching of Jesus Christ in LDS. 10: Prove the Golden Tablets were given then buried immediately and they were in Joseph Smith's hand when interpreting it. We will start there, if you can attempt to prove any claim by Joseph Smith outside of LDS, then you might have something. But as it stands now, these are claims made by LDS, so if you don't like to be challenged yet you blaspheme Jesus and the Holy Spirit by ramming a statue of a fake angel on top of a building that has nothing to do with Jesus, try again saying I have logical fallacies because I am not the one defending claims made by a straight up con man...who went so far as to claim the Egyptian Book of The Dead was about Abraham when literally thousand of the scrolls have been found all over Egypt in funerary sarcophagi.
