Monday Night Football Fever - A Decade Of The NFL On ABC (1980) - Enhanced 1080p 

An American institution when MNF was an event cities craved. Everyone looks so young. What an awesome time capsule. Once again this channel delivers.

Even though I was a kid in the 70s and early 80s I remember Monday nights were an event back then. I used to have to go to bed before the game was over but just getting to see the first half and hearing the music and listening to those three guys announcing was so exciting.

Whole towns came to life and were proud of being featured on Monday Night Football. Coverage and events were everywhere. Players anticipated with extra excitement. Even those that were not Football fans hoped that their city would shine bright on Prime Time Monday night. What a concept, What a successful Network venture.

Robert Urich, doing the moderating of the discussion with Frank; Don; and Howard, was starring in, at that time, a popular ABC-TV [US] crime drama show, "VEGA$."

People just don't talk like Howard Cosell anymore. What a legend.

FWIW, Simpson had a phenomenal game that Monday Night in Cincinnati in 1975 (he actually rushed for 197 yards and 2 TDs), but he was no match for Kenny Anderson as the Bengals won, 33-24, behind Anderson's 447-yard, 2-TD performance. 😉

Broken record, but to say this looks a lot better is an understatement! There was many incidents of antennae moving during this over the air recording to VHS in LP mode. For those of us that came to the sport later (1972) it was such a great special- we were amazed at seeing the old footage of the first MNF game. I hope the rumors are true that many more 1970's-early 1980s games are preserved somewhere.

This was a special that was given to me just the other day by romelovesdan. Obviously an over-the-air recording, it had an INSANE amount of noise in the picture, but I used Topaz to eliminate a great deal of that, as you can see from these before/after screenshots -- imgbox.com/g/C5aTeAMFxG -- the noise does still pop up here and there though. I also greatly reduced audio hiss using Audacity.

Back in the day (1980-82) down in Clearwater, Florida, there was a pub that had drink specials for MNF. You'd pick your team and they'd stamp your hand at the door. If your team scored a touchdown, then you'd win a free pitcher of beer! You wouldn't miss the night when the Dolphins, Chargers and those other high scoring teams played.

When Howard spoke about Kenny Stabler and the Raiders at 31:53 on the game played against the Saints in 1979 . . . that was an amazing game for Raiders fans. The Saints had a 21 point lead over the Raiders near halftime, with Howard lamenting how boring the game was. But the Raiders stormed back in the second half to win 42 to 35; with Howard manically exclaiming how exciting Monday Night Football was. Up to that time the Saints was in contention for a playoff spot. After the game with the Raiders, the bottom fell out with the Saints, losing the playoff spot for 1979. The lingering after-effects of that devastating loss carried over into the 1980 season, as the Saints were 1-15; which cost Dick Nolan his coaching job.

Incredible. What a time. There was nothing like Monday Night Football back in the 70’s on a Winter’s night. Wonderful memories. 🏈

Remember when Monday night football was must see TV. Robert Urich doing the moderating is great considering he played Rocky Blier in an bio pic called Fighting Back.

That 1973 game at the OB with the intentional safety was dissected in great detail by RU-vidr JaguarGator9 so I already knew about it but loved how Cosell referred to it as being "magnificent incompetents".

The one thing I was sorry about was missing the second half due to bedtime around 930 or 10pm.

I'm with Dandy Don. Snake was outstanding, game after game, on Monday Nights. The Raiders were nearly unbeaten for the first ten or fifteen years on ABC.

Back when real men played the game. No hideous USFL Trump arena underwear. Greed wiped out what the NFL once was. Monday Night football was wiped out. Howard Cosell announced the assassination of John Lennon Dec-8th 1980. Thats how the world learned about John Lennon. 😢😢😢😢😢😢. Miami Dolphins over New England Patriots in overtime 16-13. R.I.P. to all these great announcers.
