I like Mondrian a lot. And I thank you for including some of his earlier works in this video, so we can see his progression to minimal lines and vibrant contrasts. I wish you had examined that this composition is not balanced: * the vertical line is not centered, * there is are two horizontal lines to its left , one above mid- canvas and another along the bottom border, and two to its right, both in mid- canvas. * there are two rectangles, two different dimensions and two different colors. In spite of this imbalance, there is a serenity and stability to the composition. IMO this is an excellent union of geometry and color.

Mondrian was a superb artist. So is the discussion offered. Thank you!

"How does a viewer get access to the meaning of a painting like this?" That's a great question. Part of me wants to roll my eyes: "Good for you and 5-year-old me. You drew some lines and even managed to color some of this in!" But I can see the potential for interpretation and complexity too - especially in how the colors recede or protrude.

Also, since this composition is so geometrical and simplistic, how can anyone be certain that a 'Mondrian' canvas is not a forgery? It wouldn't be difficult to churn out HUNDREDS of canvases in a similar style, shifting the lines and using yellow instead of red, for example. There isn't much 'technique' in this composition, is there?

Yes there is. There is a lot of texture to the work. It's hard to appreciate his work from just a photo. Also, don't forget he made hundreds of paintings that were more "complicated " in the traditional sense of "complicated". So there is a skilled hand holding the brush, there is technique and training. They talk about the brush strokes starting at about 3:00

@@MrLogistician I appreciate you replying to my comment. And I agree that an image captured by a lens is in no way equal to seeing art in person. BUT: 1) If you followed the saga of the "Lost Leonardo", you know that many experts had opposite opinions about the authenticity of the work. They analyzed many attributes of the piece, including brush strokes. 2) A forger will analyze authentic works by an artist and do his/her best to emulate the characteristics, including brush strokes. 3) Have you seen this documentary?
