Money conversations are difficult - but necessary for a healthy relationship. Today, we’re talking about all things money and marriage: how to talk finances with your spouse, best ways to manage money as a couple, couple financial goals, and the 6 principles we use for managing finances married.

Thanks for watching! Do you want to see more videos on how to manage money as a couple? What questions do you still have?

Yes, I appreciate this video and the steps you guys took to achieve a sound financial plan that meets both your needs as a couple and individuals. I am year 12 in my marriage and this is still hard to talk about sometimes. Especially when "fingers" are being pointed at oneanother. The honesty is real and thus help me to realize that and how important a plan is and just having that hard conversation on a weekly basis. I would like to know what advise or tools you use to keep on track with budget and MISC. Purchases?

Also, as coming from different backgrounds in your financial literacy, how did you guys get on the same page? What helped?

The best way to take control of your money is to keep your finances seperate. What is his remains his and what is hers remains her's. At the beginning of the marriage decide who is responsible for which bills according to income earned. Certain bills can be shared such as vacations. Take turns to pay for dates. There should be no reason to fight over money if you stick to this simple arrangement.

You mentioned your previous scarcity mindset and “avoidance patterns” with money. That’s 100% me. Even though I promise myself a million times to conquer that mindset it feels impossible. Any suggestions on how to successfully change this approach?

Start with an attitude of plenty. Make a list of ten things you are grateful to have right now. This gets you in the mindset of you are already abundant. It changes your mood dramatically 💚

I think overtime it became something that didn’t require a lot of time, unless a new financial goal (like maybe a new(er) car) came along. It’s just checking to make sure everything is on track. Possibly also taking it one portion at a time instead of laying it completely out in one go.

too bad John is not willing to work with me on this, but...! in recent months (after 26 years of marriage) he has been at least willing to listen and even at times contribute an opinion. Yeah! Now, I need to look at me and see if there are things I'm saying inadvertently that puts him off. If so and I can fix that then perhaps I'll finally get the help I need with our finances.
