Thanks for the video Nigel. As someone who takes a keen interest on the propagating side of things, this was great to watch.. I think I have annoyed my family numerous times by pinching cuttings for their gardens! I never appreciated that one could take such a large cutting so thanks for the upload...I will be experimenting with a few larger specimens soon. In a responsible manner obviously!

Mr. Saunders, you're right about getting a single-branched money tree instead of a 5-braided one as I have one right now. I've had it for a little over 2 years. In the past 5 months or so, a couple of the branches started to rot and the 2 other ones followed suit. The one alive branch left is slowly rotting & weakening as well. I wanted to save them, or even just that one alive branch that's left. I couldn't find any other videos out there on how to root a Pachira Aquatica. Your video showed to root it in soil, which I would try to do and see if I can keep if from completely dying. Thank you for your detailed video.

Nice video Nigel. I got one of these trees grown from the seed here in Melbourne Australia. I agree with you it's a very interesting tree.It's about year and a half old.Spring last year l chopped the trunk like you have done hoping to get more branches.But it ended up with a one branch again.The top part of the tree I chopped off I cut into three pieces leaving a single leaf in each piece and got rooted in water within few weeks.Those three are growing well in pots at the moment. I even got two leaves which got rooted in water and now growing in a pot.They haven't done anything for the past eight months though.But still green.very interesting tree.One of my favourite trees.Thanks for the video.

Hi Nigel. I hope you’re well. You’re video on this plant is by far the most informative I’ve found so far! I’ve been searching for information on trimming the pachira aquatica but can’t find any information on a plant which only has leaves at the top but keeps growing taller. When the leaves fall off my plant, the stem just grows longer with more leaves but then they eventually fall off and the same thing happens again. Is it ok to trim it back to a shorter height, as them it will just be a stem? There is also another shoot coming out of the trunk and it is green but it’s been there for over two years now. Is there any way to encourage this shoot to grow? Hope you can help, thank you!

A quick question, in your experience, do these sprout from a trunk chop? Yesterday I found a braided tree that someone had thrown out and i took it home, one of the trees had died and was rotting; the others had no foliage at all and one had dried back quite a lot. I put them in some nice soil and cut away all the dead parts, I really hope to save at least one. Great little tree btw, looking forward to a new playlist ;)

I've recently been gifted a braided tree. I think I'll train them outwards away from each other, and cut them for rooting once they're woody. They range from pencil to pinky finger sized, and I'm growing them under a new set of fluorescent lights in my sun-starved apartment. Can I safely get away with pruning down to a single leader on each tree? Thanks Nigel, great show you've got.

Some people un braid the trees to get some nice twisty trunks for bonsai. Unless the trunks have fused together, I would keep green foliage on every trunk within the braid.

Hi Nigel. I just separated my braided tree. Two of five trunks died so I’m going for separate trees. I don’t have bonsai soil so I used orchid mix with a top layer of moss for now. Do you think this will do for now? Do the trunks die off from too much water or lack of it? This is my third plant.
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 3 года назад
Hello Jim, probably too much water and not enough drainage, but it's just a guess! Yes, if the one trunk gets root rot from too much water it will die off. If the plant is under watered, it can also die, but they do store water in the trunks and this is less likely. An orchid mix should work, just be sure the pot drains well and the trees are kept in a good sunny spot. Avoid a drip tray under the pot that will fill with water.

Congratulations on a new bonsai! I hope you get enough branching in time! What are you thoughts on starting a bonsai directly in a bonsai pot (with bonsai soil) instead of a training pot? It's how I started my Ficus tree from a cutting. I hope the trunk will thicken eventually because now it's very slim. I think clip ad grow technique will give it a good taper. Thank you for your videos, it's always nice to see your beautiful work.
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 8 лет назад
Your ficus will grow fine in a bonsai pot, just keep letting it grow to a bush and then cut it back. Over the years of doing this, you'll end up with a fine bonsai tree! Be careful to re pot before the roots become a solid brick in the pot. You will need to repot every 2 years if the top is left to grow wild.

@TheBonsaiZone

It may be root rot causing the problem. Try and let the tree dry out more between waterings and hopefully it will recover. Keep it in a bright location also.

The bottom half of the tree is dead. The only chance it has is to cut off the top of the tree above the rotted section and plant it in soil as a cutting. Be careful not to over water the tree, just mist it occasionally to keep it humid. Keep it in partial shade until it begins to grow again. Good luck!

Can i grow my Pachira in just water? I purchased it in a small pot filled with water from a bonsai nursery. It has been two months and temperatures touching a low of 48 deg. F. There are new sprouts, but some leaf tips are turning brown and some leaves are losing their green color. I have kept it indoors, With some ambient light and fluorescent lights. So should I be patient(spring is 2 months away) OR pot it and put it near a sunny window(south facing or north?) Any help?
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 6 лет назад
Many trees can grow in plain water for quite some time, but eventually the roots will need more oxygen and nutrients. Many cuttings are started in water and they need a transition to get used to growing in soil. I would re pot your tree in a free draining bonsai mix now, but have a tray of water under the pot that will keep the soil wet at all times. The roots on the tree will see little change in this wet soil. Gradually over a month or so, let the water level in the tray under the pot reduce. After about a month the roots should be used to a normal watering schedule that keeps the soil damp, but not wet. I have a video on watering and fertilizing that might help also..... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gXIIpxUqxdY.html

The only technique that I have found is to let the branches grow until they are woody and then prune the tree back hard. It is a very difficult tree to get branches on as a bonsai. The trees seem to want to grow only one branch as the leader and that's it!

The new growth will come out a light green. In time it should darken to a nice dark green. If it does not, try adding some fertilizer to your water and it should help. Follow the recommendations on the fertilizer, too much is as bad as too little!

Should I be concerned that the new growth is 6" longer than the compact plant? Thank you for the above comment.
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 7 лет назад
Wendy Smith The new vigorous growth shows the tree is liking the treatment you are giving it. To keep the growth small and compact, you would have to water and fertilize less. I like to keep the trees growing strongly while you are developing the tree. This new growth can be cut back to the first leaves to keep the tree smaller in height.

I don't think that tab water will kill it. I use tab water for all of my plants (doesn't matter if house plants or my bonsai) . I've had my Pachira for 3 years now, I think. I don't grow it as a bonsai, just as a nice house plant and it usually gets sunligt from the morning until noon and it's doing really fine. Yes this is correct. In its normal habitat with normal humidity and heat levels the water it receives in the wetlands/swamp environment is survivable. But in our home environments it is much drier and not as hot, at least not usually. You could probably keep it moister in a greenhouse of course. However mine does not like to be over watered at all, hates it and almost has died from it. Dare I say they “thrive on neglect”.

is a money tree the other name of horse chestnut tree ?
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 7 лет назад
It is a different species. The money tree is tropical and the Chestnut tree needs winter.

Hard to believe, but I don't have one! I've always wanted one too, but I've never seen one at a reasonable price. I only see them in box stores for 65 dollars or more. If I can find one, I'll make a video for sure, thanks!

So much contradicting info on these. Most say little water, low to medium light, no direct sun but then we see a huge tree in direct light. Maybe the small ones we buy for indoors are like wild animals born in captivity lol. Either way I just purchased my 1st one yesterday, I'll see how it goes

Here is a video from the largest grower of these.... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Gi7s9nDyaMY.html From my experience, his information sounds correct!

Yes, braided trees are no good. They don't do well. 4 out 5 died and left me with one. Surviving one is doing well.

Hopefully the one that is left has some interesting curves to it!
