Which one of these things is happening to YOUR money tree?! Let me know! 😀

Just found your channel, and I really like it. Thanks for the videos ! My new money tree has had a little bit of sunburn, but what worries me most is seeing some black on one of the individual plants. I got it from a store just three weeks ago, where it was being overwatered, and found some pests on it once I got home. So I treated it and repotted because of how incredibly soggy the soil was. But now, I'm noticing black under the "scales" of one of the trunks. It's not squishy (yet ?), but definitely not looking good. Should I remove it or wait and see if it gets soft/mushy ? (If you have the time to asnwer my question no pressure ^^"). Thank you and have a good day ;)

@@LittleWaffle Hi Amélie! Sounds like you're doing all the right things! And it's a good thing it isn't mushy yet! I would say spray it with a fungicide or a hydrogen peroxide spray just to be safe. Then it's simply a waiting game... Good luck with it! I hope you caught it fast enough to save it! ❤️

@@thegirlwithashovel Heya, I'm back with an update ! 😊 I removed the blackened stem and treated (the roots had rotten off pretty bad since I first brought it home completely soaked up and repoted into fresh soil. ) And now... He's living his best life ! Bounced back and pushing lots of new leaves. I'm delighted. Thank you for your advice 💜

My money tree becomes very full and lush when it’s outside on the porch in the summertime. At the end of summer when I bring it inside, that’s when all the problems start. last year it did perfect in my dad‘s north window and stayed beautiful up until February; and then I had to move it to a different window so it would get a little bit more light. This year it’s just doing crappy. The big leaves are falling off after turning yellow and I’ve got a bunch of tiny leaves. I have it under a grow light in the north window. I don’t know if I’m watering it too much or not enough. I think in the beginning I was watering it too much but now I think maybe I’m not watering it enough. maybe I need to feed it or change the soil.

Thank you! You are the only one who really gave me any good and useful information about my money tree. Everyone else just says its over watering, or underwatering, or not enough light, but you actually described the differences in the leaves and showed examples, which is 100% more useful! Please keep doing videos like these! :)

Why did it take Google a month to show your video in my searches?! I was away for three months and asked a friend to water my indoor plants. When I left, my money tree was gorgeous, healthy, happy. I came back to find a sad, wilting, yellowing tree with more fallen leaves that leaves on the tree. I searched for answers and I knew it was an issue with water, but couldn’t for sure asses if it was too much (there were signs of it) or too little (curly, brown dry spots). Now I know it was irregular watering issues, and too much water during the winter months when my plant will naturally receive less light. Thank you so much! Hope I can still save my tall money tree

Thanks for the info I learned a lot. I actually experienced all except the curling. I repotted 2 times thinking that the roots got rotten and changed the soil but kept in the same pot. It’s winter when I bought my money plant and it’s doing okay back then but when I relocated it this summer, the leafs started to turn yellow, fall, and small. Tried to put it back to the same location 🤞🏼 hope it will survive 🙏🏼

Not specifically about money trees, but it should apply: Leaf curling could be a sign of lack of minerals, first of all magnesium or iron, but also calcium. In bonsai, small leaves are valued, since they make the tree look a small copy of large. This is achieved by placing the tree in sun. (But not to the point where the sun burns the leaves. So for money tree it would be partial or indirect sun.) Also, the growth hormone inside a tree shoots up to, so one commonly gets strong branches and big leaves on top, with small and listless leaves underneath. (like here). This is fine for big trees, but for bonsai and house plants this is bad. Moreover, the leaves on top steal the sunlight from those below, making it worse. The solution is to seriously prune top leaves and branches. One can also wire the lower branches and move them to horizontal positions, thus increasing the sunlight falling on them. In general, if you see an area where sunlight doesn't fall on leaves, you need to either cut off these leaves and branches or cut off those that block the sunlight from reaching them.

Thank so much for the info! I am a brand new plant parent and I bought a money tree yesterday. When I bought it, I can tell that it was recently watered. Some of the stems were broken or really soft where they bent. I made the mistake of leaving the tree outside to get some sun however I forgot them outside over night. It did get into the freezing temperatures. Now I brought the plant back in but the leaves nd stems are really soft and drooping. I'm not sure if I should repot the plant with new soil or prune off the leaves/stem. Any advice? Thank you!
@thegirlwithashovel
@thegirlwithashovel Год назад
Soft/squishy stems means there's rotting from overwatering. If it isn't too far gone I would repot it into dry & warm (not freezing) soil and possibly even consider taking some cuttings if there's any left to save. I'm assuming the worst here... If it survives, then awesome!

Wow so I think I have too much natural light on my plant. I barely water so I thought it was dry as I dug my finger in the soil and I noticed the dryness. I watered the plant 1x a wk. I still saw the yellowing. Moved the plant and added some blood meal to the soil. I have many new leaves coming in. I will replant it in some new soil. I love my plant and it’s about 3ft and I want to save it.

Thanks for this valuable info on the ups and downs of the Money tree! I had a Money tree for the last 10 + years and noticed that it was growing so tall that it touched the ceiling in my apartment , so that the leaves had no space to grow. Also some of the leaves were spotty and were hanging over. I ended up cutting the branches and all the leaves off so that it will grow healthy. Did I do the right thing?
@thegirlwithashovel
@thegirlwithashovel 5 месяцев назад
Yep! I know it's hard to do it in the moment but if it was really that old, then it's roots should have enough energy to put out new leaves. You're essentially starting to turn it into a large bonsai if that makes sense! 😆

But I thought I'd give a plant a go and to be honest and to my surprise they're looking good except my money plant has been dropping leaves. I've never been too sure of when to water but my little trick is to poke my finger into the soil and feel if it's dry and if so I will water it! I've grown to love my 3 plants and have given them all names 😂 so seeing the leaves dropping made me pretty sad. I watered them yesterday so I'm 🙏🏼 no more fall off 😊 thanks for your advice and I'm going to buy one of those things that tell you when my plants need watering. Hi! I recently purchased a small money tree at Home Depot and I have heard that most money trees are tied with bands at the base. This supposedly strangles the plant. I haven’t had any problems yet, but the soil is very stiff and I don’t want to take it apart to check. Have you had any problems with this? Any suggestions? Thanks
@thegirlwithashovel
@thegirlwithashovel Год назад
Hi! First off, if the soil is stiff this can cause problems too so be aware of this. Next, these bands will most likely be fine until you repot it next. They are usually a rubber band so it stretches up to a point. But that being said, next time you repot it definitely cut those suckers off! 😂

I understood you to say the curled leaves won’t be corrected even when I correct the under watering issue… My plant put out a ton of new growth right after I brought it inside and pruned off some of the larger leaves, they are all curled and seem to be growing. Would it be wise to trim these curled leaves off or at least some of them? My money tree is only about 15” tall… three braided plants… with about a dozen new curled leaves… and probably a dozen old/large leaves. I wasn’t too concerned until the large leaves started getting dry and some falling off. This seems to have started - only with this plant - since the furnace started blowing heat near my plant table.
@thegirlwithashovel
@thegirlwithashovel 7 месяцев назад
I would keep the curled leaves until you're able to have some nice new growth. Once your plant is having nice new growth you can start removing some of the curled leaves. They might look bad but they are still photosynthesizing!

I pulled out the small plant and it was softer on the part in the ground. I cut off some of the root, and there was a dark spot inside. Long story short, I now have a much smaller plant that I don't really know what to do with. Do I try to root it in water? Do I take off all the leaves that are left so the plant can concentrate on making more roots? Would I do better putting in soil to try to root? HELP!!!! Hi Sharon! When your stem is soft in my experience it is a goner. The best you can do is take cuttings and root them in water! Hi Carmen! Lately I've been doing my own soil mix (to save some money since I have so many plants!) But you should be fine with a cactus and succulent mix, or an indoor plant soil with a bit of perlite added in. As for fertilizer, any indoor plant fertilizer should work. A good rule of thumb is to get one with somewhat even numbers (like 3-3-3, or 5-4-4). Then only apply as directed on the package. Stronger fertilizers will need to be applied less frequently, but weak fertilizers can be applied much more often! Good luck with your money tree!

Is the soil wet? Make sure you aren't overwatering it. And the yellow leaves will fall off regardless now, so just be checking in your green leaves... Are you stopping the progression of the yellowing. Also, bring it out of direct sunlight for a bit. See if that helps.

This plant should be fine with tap water, but if you're concerned, you can leave it out for a few hours in the sun. My money tree is the opposite. Big leaves at bottom, little at top. Recently got a grow light for it. It was badly damaged when I got it, the leaves were torn or had holes, and at least one weirdly shaped leaf that looked pinched. I took pity on it in the store, had I waited a few weeks they had much better ones come in at a different location. i had to trim off half a dozen of the big leaves due to all the damage it had, still have a few more to remove (been doing it slowly). I used to put my face under the leaves when I first got it and take a big breath and it was like cool, fresh air, but it doesn't do that anymore sadly.

If there are smaller leaves at the top it's saying it isn't getting as much light as it used to, so the plant light sounds like a great idea! 👍

How do I know when it’s time to repot my money tree?
@thegirlwithashovel
@thegirlwithashovel 21 день назад
If you see roots trying to push out of the soil, or if you are watering it every day because it's drying out so fast. Pull it out and see if there are a ton of roots showing through the soil or if there isn't. It's a balance you learn more than an exact science. 👍

I have it worst! My plant lost ALL the leaves but still has a strong green color in the main branch. Is going to die?
@thegirlwithashovel
@thegirlwithashovel Год назад
Possibly. But there's still a chance of it surviving if the stem is still green. I would lower your watering (since it has no leaves to use up water), and keep it in the best possible light without burning it. Give it a few weeks and it will either put out new growth, or the stem will turn dark. Here's to hoping it pulls through! 🤞

Thank you so much! Ol' Donna, I named after my mother is giving me the flux. She's about three year's old and I had been losing a lot of leaves over the past year. She was doing fine until I re-potted her over a year ago, before our recent move. She had gotten huge until I started to either over water her. Since we've been in our new place, I've obviously been under watering her and not giving her enough light. Since I heavily watered her and gave her her own plant light, she seems to be doing a lot better, so thank you for this post.

Hello, I bought this plant a few days ago and it was delivered yesterday with leaves damaged from Frost. Is there any chance to save it? If so, how? Thank you in advance
@thegirlwithashovel
@thegirlwithashovel Год назад
It depends on how frozen it was. Usually there will be some leaves that freeze first before the stem... Just look for any black portions on the stem to see if it froze or not. As long as your stem stays green you should have a good chance of recovery in time 🙂

@@lenkakasperek8039 you can. They will eventually fall off, but if the entire leaf is frozen then I'd say go ahead!

What to do if the there is sticky like glue under your money tree leaves ?
@thegirlwithashovel
@thegirlwithashovel Год назад
Check for insects. Aphids, mealybugs, and spider mites. Maybe even scale. Insects can bite the leaves, causing them to ooze out the sticky liquid... Good luck!

@thegirlwithashovel Год назад
Sounds like you need brighter light and better drainage. I'd suggest soil with additional perlite. And maybe a terra cotta pot to wick away excess moisture. And yes, new leaves only come from the top. You would have to cut it back to stimulate any new leaves lower on the stem.

Are you saying the base is mushy brown? Because if so, then it's best to propagate the green tops because your stem will most likely die. 😮‍💨

If it's fall or winter time then this is normal. If not, then it could use either a soil refresh by repotting it, or some fertilizer to get it going. And sometimes when things aren't growing above ground, it's because your plants is growing it's root system below ground. 😉

It sounds like it needs more light. Are the leaf nodes far apart or close together? Far apart means it's stretching for more light, shedding the lower leaves as it goes...
